OISC Club History 1978/1979
In the mid to late 1970‟s a number of young Ignatians were playing footy for
the Old Ignatians Football Club. Many were keen soccer fans, and religiously
watched “Match of the Day” on the ABC, and followed the UK soccer scene.
Some of the footy players, particularly David Harben (still a teacher at SIC)
and Richard Duddy (previously a teacher at SIC), had played a good
standard of junior soccer.
They decided to form an indoor soccer team and played on Sunday nights at
St Bernard‟s Recreation Centre. They searched for a name that might be
drawn from one of the famous British or European clubs. They toyed with
names like “Ignatian Academicals”, “Grasshopper Ignatius” and “Real
Ignatius” before finally settling on the name of “Bayern Ignatius”. They played
under that name for two or three seasons at St Bernard‟s, and enjoyed it so
much they decided to enter a team in the Amateur League on Sunday
afternoons.
The first season in the Amateur League was 1978. One team was entered.
The Club had no strip, balls, medical kit or any other assets at all. Majority of
the guys were students, one of the players, Ben Brogan (who was one of the
only ones working at the time and had just won some money in X-Lotto!)
loaned the Club $1,000.
A number of plain blue soccer shirts and shorts were purchased from Bailetti
Sports, and Greg Howe‟s mother sewed red and gold strips down each
sleeve and down the side of the shorts. The team wore the socks of Old
Ignatians Football Club.
Home games were played on the top ground at St Ignatius. The whole
squad played Australian Rules Football on Saturday afternoons, spent
Saturday nights at the Robin Hood Hotel, and then fronted up for Soccer on
Sunday afternoons.
9
The parents of one of the players, Michael Fitzgerald, owned The Cremorne
Hotel on Unley Road. This was in the days when pubs weren‟t open on
Sunday nights, but the guys were always able to have a few beers after the
match at the Cremorne.
They trained on the inside portion of the old cycling velodrome in Sheldon
Street, Norwood (which has now been demolished to make way for housing).
It was referred to as the “The Giant Sheldon Street Bowl”.
David Harben and Richard Duddy, being the only ones who really knew
anything at all about soccer, ran training sessions.
In the second season, much interest had been generated amongst a number
of the footballers, who also decided they wanted to play soccer on Sundays.
Therefore a reserves team was entered and some young soccer players
(proper soccer players, not footballers like the rest!) who had played soccer
at the school and brought a new edge to the Club.
It was these young lads who would become the future of the Club, and who
would take over the running of the Club. They included Marco and Frank
Spinelli, Dino “Angry Young Man” Parletta, Stef “The Mud Runner” Misseri,
Charlie Clemente, Rob “The Socialist” Commazzetto, Benny Pietrafesa, Steve
Frigo and Eric Coro.
Gradually, over the next few years, the footy players got too old and/or
injured to continue playing Saturdays and Sundays, and as a crop of young
Ignatian students came out of school, they effectively took over the Club.
David Harben Captained and coached the team
1982
After a two year hiatus long serving St Ignatius Junior School Master Chris
George, along with recent college graduates Frank and Marco Spinelli,
entered a team in the Collegiate Soccer League (CSL) for the 1982 season.
From the original side of 1978, both Harben and Ben Brogan played in the

OISC vs. SPOC This is a tough and very long standing rivalry with its foundation steeped in whom has
the greatest spirit to seek victory on the day but also in the fact that the two Clubs
have very similar histories and have regularly been in the same competitions and
Leagues. There is always plenty of passion in these games with narrow victories
enjoyed by both sides. The rivalry has matured somewhat in recent years after a
number of bitter confrontations in the late 90s and both Clubs enjoy the banter that
comes before the derby as the Catholic, red, working class Iggies take on the
Protestant, blue, silvertails of Saints. The passion for the Iggies ' boys runs deep, so
much so that the feelings towards SPOC are aptly catered for in the club song.
SPOC reciprocate in kind, always seeing any match against OISC as a highlight on
the calendar. A Collegiate Cup Final contest was followed by tight finishes in the
Collegiate League before OISC made the jump to the Amateur League in 1993. The
rivalry was restored when SPOC joined the fray the following year and a League
season does not feel quite the same without the derby game.

OISC vs. Adelaide University Some acrimony over using playing fields for pre-season reserved only for the elite was the
foundation for this niggle. Uni being decked out in a black and white kit enshrines an attitude
of a misplaced judgement about right and wrong. Tight Collegiate games began the
passion and this continued through the journey into the amateur league. In recent time
valuables disappearing from away games has led to a distaste that manifests itself in a key
line in the OISC club song.

OISC vs. Gleeson Recent rivalry was set following the departure of key previous OISC players to the fledging
Gleeson team. The water bottle trip to the home of Gleeson adds to the sense of animosity
but the games have that spark which makes each player keen to partake. A brand of
football based on stoic, possession irks the free flowing Ignatius creative style so not only do
the players clash but the brand of football does too.

Federation Cup 2003
Campbelltown City Soccer Club 5 vs. 0 OISC
The pushing of the envelope continued with the club nominating for participation in the
Federation Cup. An away tie with Campbelltown meant although the journey was not far for
us the respective playing abilities would mean we were well stretched. The lads applied
themselves well and the end score line was a clear loss but not the cricket score some
predicted. Their superior levels of fitness showed in the second half but alas a fine effort that
finished this experience with a feeling like we did ourselves proud.
