Since no questions were raised president declared that the report was accepted by the membership.

No resolutions were received by the secretary. Rev. Fr. Rector Jayantha Wickramasinghe was invited by Mr.

Placidus Peter to deliver his address in accordance with the agenda.

Rector Rev. Fr. Jayantha Wickramasinghe in his maiden address at an AGM as the rector of St. Mary’s College mentioned that his role model in his priesthood is none other than our chief guest His Grace, Rt. Rev. Dr.

Nicholas Marcus Fernando. He went on to state that he was not a stranger to Negombo as he has served in the

parish of Negombo for some time commencing his priesthood carrier. He commented the outgoing committee

for providing a dignified rector’s office room and the refurbishing the two office rooms of the vice principals together with the toilets for the staff and a rest room for them. The chapel ceiling which was redone by us came

in for praise by the rector. As for college matters he went on to state that mainly studies, sports, spiritual and

English were the main targeted items in the schools curriculum. A five year plan had been drawn up for school

matters and stated that a holy mass in English was held daily in school. He paid a glowing tribute for the outgoing committee for the assistance rendered to the school and stated that the same support was expected from

the incoming committee. It was stated by the rector that any OBA member could come and visit him as he has a

special place for us in his line of duty and whatever support that the school can render to the OBA will be done

without any reservations. He made a special thank you for providing the coaches fees which is close upon to Rs.50,000.00 a month.

Since Rev. Fr. Ciswan de Croos was not present due to vespers for the May feast been held at his Parish church

had informed the secretary about this matter and we missed his address.

The outgoing president (as per constitution) Mr. Placidus Peter thanked the committee for the support rendered

to him to make the functions of the OBA meaningful during the last three years. He thanked PP Mr. Neil

Fernando for encouraging him to take over the presidency. He thanked all committee members for the

wonderful manner in which all projects undertaken by the OBA were completed without any hitch. During the

crisis time in the school in October last year Rev. Fr. Ranjith Madurawala’s contribution was greatly appreciated

and also for appointing a rector to SMC after thirty years. He appreciated the help rendered by old boys Hon. Deputy Minister Mr. Sarath Gooneratne, Hon Minister (PC) Mr. Nimal Lansa and his secretary Mr. Dayan

Lansa. A special mention was made of his wife and three children for the assistance giving to him in make his

term as the president meaningful. President thanked his grace for accepting our invitation and being present as

the chief guest.

Introducing the chief guest, His Grace Rt. Rev. Dr.Nicholas Marcus Fernando Vice President Mr. Nimal Mello

that His Grace was born in Munnakkara and had his early education their and for higher studies joined St.

Mary’s College. He was ordained in 1959 was appointed the Archbishop of Colombo in 1977. Further Mr. Mello went on to say that His Grace was very much interested in our school wellbeing and thanked him for the

support he has given us in the past.

His Grace speaking on the invitation of the president thanked the OBA of his former school where he did his important part of studies for inviting him for this 93rd annual general meeting. He mentioned that the committee

members who came to invite him were very persuasive in what they spoke and hence decided to grace this

occasion. Though his primary education was in the Munnakkara school his major studies were done at St.

Mary’s College Negombo. Recalling his school days his grace mentioned how he got caned for coming late to class because they had got late to be served tea at Soysa Bakery. He mentioned by the name the various

principals and teachers whom he said were fortunate enough to have studied under them. He was well prepared

to educate the gathering about the history of SMC. According history there are three dates given as the commencement of SMC. The inauguration of the college is around 1871. Commencement of this school was a

great boom to our fore fathers who were fisherman as their young siblings could have a proper education and

English was also taught in this school. The first school building had cost around one thousand sterling pounds.

He made a request from the OBA to search for the proper history of the college by appointing capable committee and updating our web site with this information and more importantly he offered his services to this

committee and said that if called he would be present in Negombo to help us. He ended his speech by thanking

the present committee and wished the incoming committee good luck. He also wished our new rector Rev Fr.

Jayantha Wickramasinghe for his success in the school affairs.

Next the head table was prepared for the election of office bearers where the secretary was requested to stay to

carry out the activities until the new secretary was elected.

Throughout the election process the President elect encouraged members to come forward to contest the election for the limited positions in the Committee of Management.

In his brief inaugural speech he thanked the members for placing trust in him and electing him as President for

the new term. Whilst thanking the outgoing Committee for a job well done he stressed the need for more active participation by the new members by joining the various sub-committees to face many challenges that lie ahead.

He noted that only about 40% was actively involved in the work of the association in the past and that it has to

change and pledged that he would strictly apply provisions in the constitution in dealing with long absentees.

The President thanked His Grace for gracing the occasion despite the busy schedule and undertook to mobilise his team to follow up on the offer of help with regard to the College history. Welcoming The Rector, Rev. Fr.

Jayantha Wickremasinghe, he noted that the feedback received indicate the College moving in the right

direction and assured the continued support of the OBA.

The President concluded his speech by saying, “Let’s work for one common goal”
