Meetings

The 6th Annual General Meeting of the Old Anandians 97 Group was held on 10th July 2010

(minutes of the AGM is enclosed as Annex 1). Subsequent to the AGM, nine (9) Executive

Committee meetings and two (2) special meetings were held during the 2010/2011 term. In

addition, several sub committee meetings were held to organize special events conducted by the

Group.

Representations

As an affiliated group of the main Old Boys Association, the 97 Group was able to appoint Aruna

Ratnaweera to represent the group at the Executive Committee of the main OBA. In addition, for

the first time, two members from the 97 Group got elected to the main OBA Executive Committee,

as a result of the successful campaign launched by the group, which demonstrated the strength

the 97 Group has built up to now. The successful candidates were the President Tharanatha

Palliyaguruge and 97 Group Executive Committee member; Yohan Liyanage. Upon being

appointed to the main OBA Executive Committee, Tharanatha Palliyaguruge excelled to become a

member of the Management Committee of the main OBA as the Editor, while Yohan assumed

responsibilities at the Affiliated Groups sub committee as the Secretary. In addition, Aruna

Ratnaweera and Sajith Ratnayake have performed commendably well in the respective sub

committees they were requested to assist and as a result, the 97 Group has been identified as one

of the strongest and up-coming affiliated groups by the main OBA.

Contributions

In support of the activities organized by the Old Anandians Buddhist Association (OABA),

commemorating the ‘2600 Sambuddha Jayanthi’ the 97 Group made a financial contribution of Rs.

10,000/- to the OABA.

In addition, the 97 Group Members were able to make donations totaling to Rs. 186,000/- for the

‘Ananda Parade 2011’, becoming the fifth largest contributor among the 34 affiliated groups of the

main OBA.

On a request made by the main OBA, the 97 Group committed to undertake five scholarships to

five students in financial need. This commitment would remain until the students who are now in

grade six complete their school education. Five Group members have undertaken to finance these

scholarships while the Group would oversee the continuation of the funding.

Projects, Events and Activities

Anande Ape Avurudda (AAA)

The grand project carried out by the 97 Group for the 2010/2011 term was the “Anande Ape

Avrudda” which was held on the 7th April 2011 at the Jana Kala Kendraya, Pelawatta. Similar to the

inaugural event held in 2010, the AAA 2011 managed to fully accomplish its objectives in bringing

back the forgotten and authentic traditions of our culture and also to improve our relationship

with the school and the main OBA.

Ananda 124 - Fun Fair & Trade Exhibition 2010

In association with the main organizing committee of the ‘Ananda 124’ carnival, the 97 Group

participated in organizing the play area and coordinating the Musical Shows which were held at

the end of each of the four days of the carnival. The commitment and the capacity of the 97 Group

members led by Sajith Ratnayake as the organizing committee chairman were highly appreciated

by the main OBA.

Ananda Parade 2011

In addition to the financial contributions facilitated through the 97 Group, group members actively

participated in the highly successful event organized by the main OBA by undertaking the full

burden of organizing the Mini Carnival held at ‘Green Path’. In parallel to the organizational efforts

on Mini Carnival coordinated by Sajith Rathnayaka, the group members carried out the ‘I Was

There’ photograph campaign which enabled the parade participants to take home a souvenir

which they would cherish even in the future. Main OBA and parade participants alike commended

the two activities conducted by the 97 Group within the Parade, marking it a landmark event for

the group in terms of recognition and team effort.

Ananda College Museum

A request has been made to our Group by the Main OBA with regard to maintaining Ananda

College Museum held at the Olcatt library, which gives an insight to the proud history of our Alma

Mater. This was managed by the 70-75 group up to now and as we the 97 Group is a key up and

coming Group this request has been made from us. Thus steps are being taken to take charge of

this task and make every effort to uplift our Group ties with both the school and the main OBA.

Annex 1: Minutes of the 6th Annual General Meeting held on 10th July

The 6th AGM of the Old Anandians 97 Group was held on 10th July 2010 at the Chandra

Wettasinghe Memorial Hall, Ethul Kotte from 5.00 p.m.

Notice Convening the Meeting

President Tharanatha Read out the notice convening the AGM and welcomed the members. The

AGM proceedings commenced with the attendees observing “Pansil”. Then the President called

upon the members to observe two minutes of silence in memory of the two beloved members of

the Group who passed away during the course of the year.

The President thanked the outgoing executive committee for the support extended to him in

carrying out his duties. Further, he mentioned that during the year, 97 Group has completed

several projects successfully and as a result, has been able to build up a good relationship with the

collage and the main OBA.

Confirmation of Minutes of the 5th Annual General Meeting

Minutes of the 5th AGM, which had been circulated, were adopted without any changes by the

proposal of Yohan Liyanage seconded by Nuwan Jayawardena.

Annual Report for the year 2009/2010

The Annual Report of the Old Anandian 97 Group for the 2009/2010 term was presented by the

Secretary of the Executive Committee Aruna Ratnaweera.

Presentation of Financial Statements

The audited financial statements of the Group comprising the income expenditure statement and

the balance sheet, which had been circulated by the Treasurer Udara Nuwandika, was adopted

without any revisions as proposed by Amila Wickramasinghe, seconded by Hasitha Ekanayake.

Resolutions of which due notice has been given

There were no resolutions to be presented to the membership at the AGM.

Election of Executive Committee and other appointments

To chair the AGM during election of the new Executive Committee for the 97 Group, President

Tharanatha proposed Dhanushka Prabath as the Pro-term President. Dhanushka assumed the

interim duty in the absence of any objections or alternate nominations.

The Pro-term President proposed Tharanatha Palliyaguruge as the President of the Old Anandians

97 Group for the 2010/2011. The membership approved the appointment unanimously. The

election of executive committee members and designation of other responsibilities is summarized

below.

Addressing the membership on behalf of the newly elected Executive Committee, President

Tharanatha expressed his sincere gratitude to the previous Executive Committee and to the group

members for the work carried out during the previous term. The President further welcomed the

members of the new Executive Committee.

Suggestion made by members after Election of Executive Committee

1. Work closely with the Principal and the Main OBA to make “Anande Ape Avurudda” a

grand event of the college.

2. Try to increase the number of members who get selected for the Main OBA Executive

Committee from the 97 Group.

3. Form a new fund to meet the urgent financial needs for small project such as

- minor repairs of the school

- welfare activities for Members

- promoting memberships

- administration costs

Lastly, the President thanked all 97 Group members, the Executive Committee members and well-

wishers and requested for continuation of support, commitment and contributions to take the Old

Anandians 97 Group to even greater heights.
