Second quarter has quickly approached and I can’t believe we will be ringing in the New Year before we blink an eye. We are nearing the conclusion of our fall sports season and start-ing to look ahead to winter and spring. One of these upcoming events is the celebration of our 25th Anniversary. Continue to stay tuned on upcoming special events to commemorate this important school milestone. We have several fun activities already completed.

I am excited to announce TWO State Championships have been earned since I last wrote. Our Hawks won State in Girls Gymnastics and Boys Cross Country. The most recent cross-country championship has added to a grand total of 50 STATE TITLES for Olathe East. This is truly amazing and a huge testament to the current and longstanding tradition of athletic excellence. I am so proud of our student athletes and coaches for this sustained record of achievement.

The Orange and Blue Brigade recently wrapped up another very successful competitive season at the KU Heart of America Marching Festival. They were awarded third in their class and third overall out of 23 bands. They were also awarded Best General Effect for the day out of all bands. Earlier in the year they performed again at the Bands of America Super Regional which is one of the most competitive marching competitions in America with 64 bands in attendance; they were awarded 17th in their class at this competition. Early in the season the Brigade attended the Blue Springs Marching Festival where they were awarded Best Drum Majors, Best Soloist and 3rd in their division as well.

In the area of academics, a huge congratulation goes to 50 of our Olathe East senior students who will be recognized as Kansas Honors Scholars at a program at Gardner Edgerton on November 3. The KU Alumni Association sponsors this program and it spotlights the top 10% of all graduating seniors in the state of Kansas. As I walk through classrooms I am continu-ously impressed by the academic rigor our students are experiencing and the thinking and learning needed to fulfill the many complex assignments and tasks we are asking of them.

Perhaps, most importantly, Olathe East participated in Be the Voice week. This week was a joint effort in bullying and suicide prevention. Throughout the week, students pledged to find their voice in their efforts, to take care of themselves while being kind, compassionate, brave, spirited and willing to stand up for each other. During lunches, there were various activities to participate in, such as a Be the Voice pledge banner to sign, suicide preven-tion bracelets and resources, daily affirmations and opportunities to share how students are being the voice for themselves or others when they need help. Please contact us if you are feeling your child needs some extra support or immediate help. Caring for all Hawks socio-emotional needs is of the utmost importance to us. The Hawk family is here to help and support your child in the best way we can. Your kids are very special to us and we want to work alongside our parents to insure students at Olathe East are prepared academically and emotionally for their current and future world.

athletics corner

OE Men’s soccer captured their fourth consecutive undefeated Sunflower League Title with a 1-0 victory over SME on October 13. That’s 44 league victories in a row, quite an accomplishment, and we are very proud of our Men’s soccer team. They currently have a 17-1 record and will play BV West in the Quarterfinal game. Post season always brings out the best in teams as everyone starts with a clean slate and only winners advance onward to that elusive State title game. Go Hawks.

Gymnastics Wins State #49The State Gymnastics Meet was everything we had hoped it would be. There was intense competition between Newton and Olathe East for 1st place, and ultimately, our Lady Hawks came away with the win. We had solid routines on all events and new vaults by Katie Wingate and Anna Vogel were the difference-makers that led to our success. Sam Bond was our strong and steady leader with consistent routines on all events, with a 1st place floor, 1st place vault, and 1st place in the All-Around. Katie Wingate also led the Hawks with a 3rd place vault finish, 2nd place on floor and 4th in the All-Around. ~by Mallory West, Head Coach

This is the seventh state title for the OE gymnastics program (2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2016) and the 49th (and counting) state title in the 25 years East has been open. Congratulations Hawks!

Boys Cross Country Wins State #50The Olathe East Boys Cross Country team won their first State Championship team title on Saturday, October 29 at Rim Rock Farm in Lawrence. Led by Will Tindall, who won the overall state title with a time of 16:24 over 5k, the Hawks scored 67 to second place Garden City’s 119. Ryan Weishaar and Alex Kirk also medaled, with Ben Kahnk, Connor Young, Austin Rex and Jacob Vermillion making up the rest of the team. It’s the program’s sixth title as the girls won in 2006, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2014. The Lady Hawks placed 12th as team, mak-ing this the fourteenth straight year they have qualified for the state meet.~by Tony Bozarth, Head Coach

activities.eduTie DesignThe Textile Design classes created neckties for some of the male staff members at Olathe East. Each student was randomly assigned a teacher as their client and met with each one to get a sense of their interests, hob-bies, families, etc. The ties were delivered on October 17 and can be seen in the window displays outside of the library. Hawk Leaders Hawk Leaders have continued to be hard at work, teaching 9th graders valu-able lessons about high school and life in general. So far we have covered topics including striving for excellence, cooperation, perspective and deci-sion making. As the first quarter came to an end, so did the first half of Hawk Leaders, so we only have a few mentoring sessions remaining.

Hawk Leaders have also been busy selling delicious Butter Braids the last few weeks to fund the program for upcoming events for both the Hawk Leaders and 9th graders. We are planning to schedule a Movie Night in November and will also host Cocoa & Cram in December to help freshmen prepare for their first round of semester finals. We look forward to Quarter 2 so we can continue to build relationships with the Class of 2020.

Hawk-A-Po-LoozaStuCo is sponsoring the 16th Annual Hawk-A-Po-Looza Festival November 7-November 11. The Mr. Hawk Pageant, canned food drive and blood drive will be featured events.
