Ice Report

• Initiation: This division had 9 teams. They practiced almost every Wednesday for an hour, shared with three teams on the ice. On Saturday they played with 4 teams being there for 1 ½ hours and 4 more for another 1 ½ hours. One team got a bye and usually they were worked around tournaments.

• Novice House Teams: This division had 11 teams, one being female. They practiced twice each week for an hour on half ice, same day and same time. On the weekend they had 5 game spots so 10 teams played and 1 had a bye week. Again the byes were worked around tournaments as best as the director could. They had 20 weeks of games so around 16 to 17 home games that were 1 hour and 15 minutes in length.

• Novice and Atom travel: 2 Novice and 5 Atom travel teams and 1 female atom travel. They practiced twice each week for an hour on half ice, same day and same time. Ice Report • Peewee: We had 7 male and 1 female team. Each team practiced 2 times a

week for an hour. They sometimes had a shared practice and they always had an alone if they practiced in the morning. They had many 30-30-30 and 45-15-45 practices as well. They also had some alones at night. The female teams had no mornings so they had more shared and 30-30-30 than the male teams. The boys played in the CAHL and the females in the RMFHL and both had around 16 to 20 games plus play-offs for the teams that made it, half at home. The games were in 2 hour spots. They were also given 1 home exhibition game from OMHA. For 2011/2012 there may be more shared practice ice to accommodate ice concerns.

• Bantam: We had 5 males and 2 female Bantam teams. They normally had an alone in the morning and an alone at night. The night time was sometimes a 30-30-30 but for the most part they were all alone. The female teams had no mornings so they had a few more shared or 30-30-30 at night. They all played in the CAHL/RMFHL and played in excess of 18 games including play-offs, half at home. The games were in 2 hour spots. They were also given 1 home exhibition game from OMHA.

Ice Report • Midget: We had 4 males and 2 female Midget teams. The boys had a

morning and a night alone, always Monday and Wednesday. The females were Wednesday alone in Blackie and their other practice was in Okotoks mostly 30-30-30 but sometimes alone. This was done so they could all schedule around work. They all played in the CAHL and played 16 to 20 games including play-offs, half at home. The games were in 2 ½ hour spots. They were also given 1 home exhibition game from OMHA.

• GeneralAdditionally, we had 3 ice times on Wednesday in Stavely, 2 in Blackie. We used the outdoor rink in Black Diamond from November through February, 4 times a week, when the weather allowed. The Peewee and Bantam boys rotated through Stavely on Wednesday, The female Midgets had the Blackie spots permanently on Wednesday. The outdoor ice was given to every team once this season from Atom through Midget, female and male. A few teams had it up to 3 times.

iii) Fees will increase about 4% next year. iv) Questions to Bob – Why does OMHA keep a reserve of 10% but still raise the fees by

4%? We need at least a 10% reserve as we cannot run a deficit budget. Our membership cannot grow anymore right now, so the reserve is vital to cover any unexpected or increased costs. Why does the Timbits program pay so much in fees considering the amount of ice they get? We still have to cover the cost of administrative fees, ice costs, etc. Is there an early registration incentive? There is a $25 early registration incentive.

c) Operations Coordinator (Jamie Steer) – please see attached report for highlights

i) Jamie emphasized that our membership cannot add any more teams, due to availability of ice. We currently have 875 members.

d) VP Programs – Doug Skurdal – Please see attached report for highlights.

Minutes of OMHA Board Meeting Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

1. Meeting called to order at 7:15pm 2. In attendance: Karen Arnholtz, Jeff Faye, Jeff Bahr, Robert Mercier, Dean Black,

Berkley Stone, Ken Hughes, Mike Smith, Doug Skurdal, Jamie Steer, Val McLellan. 3. Minutes from Previous Meeting – Dean approved minutes from April/11. Doug Skurdal

seconded. 4. Reports

a) Operations Coordinator, Jamie Steer – i. Hockey Alberta AGM – Jamie and Jeff attended. Significant for next

year: every hit to the head will be called. Hockey Canada ruling has been changed so that refs will have more options to apply this rule, such as a double minor vs a major. As well they have added to this rule “Accidental” (minor and 10 min) and “Intentional” (major and a game).

ii. Ice Schedule – Ice times have been set for tune ups and evaluations. Sept 11th is the first ice time.

b) Admin Assistant, Karen Arnholtz – i. Evaluation Review Cttee – 49 responses were received.

Recommendations as follows: a) Replace tune ups with Skill sessions. Possibly use the National Skills

and Standards test with a retest at Christmas time. This will not be part of the evaluation.

b) Actual game sessions for evaluations rather than “shinny” style. This can include refs from ORA

c) PeeWee checking clinic at the end of the year to include 2nd year Atom, rather than at the beginning of the next season.

d) Use a standard notification to all players to tell them what team they will be on. The coach will tell the Director and then give each player a letter. Letters are not to be opened until player has left the arena.

e) Jeff will develop clear criteria that all evaluators will have during evaluations. This will be available to parents also.

f) Doug will draft a notification to go out to the membership regarding the evaluation changes. As well he will contact ORA to discuss their involvement.

ii. Registration – Players must register within their age group – no exceptions, unless the need arises and on the advice of the Board.

Our new registration deadline is July 31st. c) VP, Coach and Player Development, Jeff Bahr –

i. Skillz Proposal – 50-75 ice sessions at Skillz, with 2 sessions per team (from initiation to PW). The cost is $165/hour. This will free up 4 hours of ice time. Board agrees to this proposal.

ii. Coach applications will be online.

Page 61: Okotoks Minor Hockey Okotoks Minor Hockey …fscs.rampinteractive.com/okotoksmha/files/association/Minutes/2011...Okotoks Minor Hockey Association This presentation will be available

d) President, Robert Mercier – i. Western Financial Group would like to provide sponsorship to OMHA

for our new jerseys. We will allow their logo on the jerseys, on back and low. Robert will follow up with this.

ii. OOAA is looking at 2 PWAA teams next year. e) Secretary, Val McLellan

i. Upcoming calendar of meetings was given to everyone. Board contact info will be sent out.

f) Game and Conduct, Dean Black – i. Dean has dealt with 2 issues regarding coaching staff.

5. New Business – Berkley asked that we use pinneys rather than jerseys for evaluations. We may look at getting these from OOAA.

6. Dean adjourned the meeting and Jeff seconded. The next Board meeting is Aug. 23rd, Lakeview Inn at 6:45pm, followed by the Evaluation Meeting.

Minutes of OMHA Board Meeting Tuesday, September 13th, 2011

1. Meeting called to order at 7:15pm 2. In attendance: Karen Arnholtz, Jeff Faye, Jeff Bahr, Robert Mercier, Berkley Stone, Ken

Hughes, Mike Smith, Doug Skurdal, Nick Ruigrok, Sarah Irving, Amanda G., Val McLellan.

3. Minutes from Previous Meeting – Ken made the motion to approve minutes from June/11. Doug Skurdal seconded. All in favor.

4. Reports a) President, Robert Mercier –

i. Zone 5 Meeting, CAHL – Several items were brought forward at the Zone 5 meeting. All first year coaches must to the Respect in Sport program. Next year, this will be mandatory for parents. This may become part of our online registration, where registration will not be permitted if this has not been completed. Hockey Alberta has a new website. There is a new head contact rule which came out of the concussion summit plan. It is felt that the proper helmet is the main deterrent in preventing concussions, not mouthguards. Chev has a new program where kids born in 2006 will get a new helmet if registered in Minor Hockey.

ii. Changes at Novice – There is pressure from the OOAA to accelerate players at a younger age. We will have 2 equal teams in the Novice A Travel program. This is to teach more kids to compete. We would like to try this for this year to see if this does make a difference. Mike has had some negative feedback. Robert will write a letter to the parents.

iii. Initiation – Nick was asked to consider age level groupings. Nick would prefer to keep it as it is, as this is the first introduction to hockey. Rather, we should develop coaches at these levels to teach specific skills. Perhaps a coaches’ handbook could be developed to help set up specific skill practices. At his time, there will be no changes to the Initiation program.

b) Admin Assistant, Karen Arnholtz – i. Travel Permits – Managers must get their travel permits through Karen.

ii. Registration – There are still some kids on the waiting list but we will know more when OOAA teams have been decided. Possible have these players come out to Tune Ups just in case there is room available.

c) VP, Coach and Player Development, Jeff Bahr – i. New Logo – Spy Design provided OMHA with several ideas. A general

pattern was decided on, but we will ask Spy Design to work a bit more on the font. As well, we will be able to get CSA approved helmet stickers with the new logo.

Page 63: Okotoks Minor Hockey Okotoks Minor Hockey …fscs.rampinteractive.com/okotoksmha/files/association/Minutes/2011...Okotoks Minor Hockey Association This presentation will be available

ii. New Jerseys – we will possibly go with the “Dallas Stars” stock jerseys rather than custom jerseys. We will need to decide on how many teams will get new jerseys this year.

d) VP Programs, Doug Skurdal – i. Referees for Evaluations – ORA wanted to know what the refs would get

paid for this. It was decided that they would get $10/hour. Jack Bill is the new ORA liaison.

ii. Goalie Pre-evaluations – Robert will send an email to families of goalies informing them if there is a chance that they may not make a team. This allows the goalie to try out in a different position, or go to a different association. There are neighboring associations looking for goalies.

iii. Pinneys – Pinneys are needed for evaluations. Karen will get some from OOAA.

iv. Sarah Irvine is the Assistant Bantam Director to help Howard. 5. Bob adjourned the meeting and Nick seconded.

The next Board meeting is Tuesday, Oct 11, Lakeview Inn at 7:15pm.

Hughes, Mike Smith, Doug Skurdal, Nick Ruigrok, Amanda Germain, Missy Munroe, Bob McMaster, Doug Moeckl, Jamie Steer, and Val McLellan.

3. Minutes from Previous Meeting – Nick made the motion to approve minutes from Sept/11. Doug Moeckl seconded. All in favor.

4. Reports a) Operations Coordinator, Jamie Steer –

i. CAHL – CAHL has a new website and schedules will be up this week. Rosters and jersey numbers must be given to Karen and Jamie as soon as possible. Teams must be carded correctly prior to their first game. Karen will send an email to all Directors to forward to their teams.

ii. Ice Scheduling – Next week’s schedules will be out to teams right away. Teams are not to go to any tournaments in the first 4 weeks of the season (prior to the re-seeding weekend) or the weekend following re-seeding. This will be discussed at the Managers’ meeting.

b) Admin Assistant, Karen Arnholtz – i. Website – Each Director will be sent passwords so they can go to the

website and put in their own ice schedules. Also, please send Karen the names of coaches and managers for each team to put on the website. Each team will have their own page.

ii. Clinics – Our on-ice clinics will be held in Blackie. Karen will confirm the dates. We will do Coach Level and Safety. All coaches must have their requirements met by Dec 31/11.

iv. Logo and Apparel – Teams must only use one of our three approved suppliers when ordering apparel. No one else has been given permission to use our logo. This is to protect the integrity of the logo. The new logo is now ready to use and will be sent to our 3 suppliers. We will determine which type of jersey to use. Western Financial will be sponsoring our new jerseys, but are waiting to hear the final costs. We may get other sponsors as well. Nick asked if we might consider approving a 3rd jersey. These jerseys must be purchased by individual teams and must be approved by the board. The third jerseys cannot be worn during league play, only in tournaments and exhibition games.

All house and travel teams must wear OMHA jerseys for all games.

c) President, Robert Mercier – i. Registration – Next year, we will no longer be guaranteeing anyone a

spot on a team, due to the number of registrations we are now receiving.

d) Treasurer, Bob McMaster – i. Directors should remind all coaches and managers about the meeting on

Oct. 13th.

e) VP, Coach and Player Development, Jeff Bahr – i. National Skill Testing was done during Evaluations. Coaches were

positive about this and would like to see it continued. The information will be put into the national data base.

f) VP Programs, Doug Skurdal – i. Thanks to Directors for their hard work during evaluations.

ii. Midgets will have too many players on each team. Robert will send an email to all Midget players to explain that teams can only allow 17 players and 2 goalies on the roster at one time (Hockey Alberta rule)

g) Round Table –

i. Ken Hughes, Female Director – Their will be one mixed team with both PW and Bantam age girls on the team. There has been some objection to this but this configuration has been due to the numbers at both levels.

ii. Jeff Faye, PW Director – Evaluations went well. iii. Nick Ruigrok, Initiation Director – Initiation is going well. Some nets

are in need of repair. iv. Amanda Germain and Missy Munroe, Atom Co-Directors – Amanda’s

husband is now coaching a team. Robert made a motion to amend Article 7C for a one year term only, so that Amanda Germain can remain as a Co-Director for Atom. Nick seconded this. All in favor. Carried.

v. Berkley Stone, Midget Director – Midget hockey is going well now. vi. Doug Moeckl, Equipment Coordinator – We are missing a set of Black

jerseys from Atom last year. We will talk to last year’s managers.

5. Bob adjourned the meeting and Nick seconded. The next Board meeting is Monday, Nov 14th, Lakeview Inn at 7:15pm.

b) ORA, Jack Bil – i. The ORA is trying to have all games that require 3 officials covered, but

this has been difficult due to the lower number of experienced officials that are often required. One third of all officials are new this year, and over one half are second year of less.

Peewee DivisionDirector Jeff Faye (pg 1)

We had 130 players registered for PEEWEE this year. Four players decided not to play after the first 3 weeks. CAHL league – (12 goaltenders). Teams are 10/6/2, 11/5/2, 11/5/1, 12/5/1 and 12/5/2.CAHL teams originally had been put into tiers 1 to 6.Peewee 1 – Stayed in Tier 1 with a record of 3-2-0 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 2 (A) – Stayed in Tier 2 with a record of 1-2-0 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 3 (B) – Moved to Tier 2 with a record of 0-0-3 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 4A (Green) – Moved to Tier 4 with a record of 1-0-0 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 4B (Gold) – Moved to Tier 4 with a record of 1-1-0 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 5A (Green) – Stayed in Tier 6 with a record of 4-1-1 after the Nov 15th re-tier.Peewee 5B (Gold) – Stayed in Tier 6 with a record of 4-2-1 after the Nov 15th re-tier.

Issues and Successes. One coach issued a 9.2a plus the OMHA suspension to November 28th, if conditions are met.Issue with Peewee 4A Green player and team. On-going.Some parents were very unhappy with the player team selection process. Further education for the parents is required. I found that the issues I had were from parents who did not understand the difference between the Four, then three evaluation groups and the four Peewee travel team skates. The Peewee 5 skate was a 5A/5B team selection skate. Emails were sent out several times by Karen and me to “READ” the evaluation process document. That was not done by a lot of parents. This needs to be presented in another way for next year. Coaches are doing a good job overall so far this year. A couple new head coaches and assistant coaches have stepped up.Relatively smooth evaluation and team selection process for Peewee. The evaluation process worked out well this year. Parents were grumbling but they always will.Would like more time between team selection skates to select the coaches.Had too many kids on the ice during the Peewee 4A/4B team selection skate. Needed to break it up by possibly having the locks from Peewee 3 stay off the ice.The Peewee skills’ testing was a success. I had plenty of volunteers and including Midget player help. All players, coaches and volunteers seemed to enjoy the process. Jeff Bahr has released the Respect in Sport information; I want to ensure all coaches take it. Some need it for sure.
