Accounting and Payroll

Basic Accounting CertificateIf you’re working to keep the books competently for a small business, or are interested in an entry-level accounting job, this 66-hour hands-on program can provide you with the necessary expertise. It also provides a good foundation for those who are planning to study computer-based accounting such as Simply Accounting.

This two-module program covers accounting concepts, generally accepted accounting principles, the rules of debit and credit, the accounting cycle, using the general journal to record transactions and posting to the general ledger. Preparation of financial statements, periodic adjustments, and year-end books are also covered.

In the second module, you’ll learn about specialized journals and the use of sub-ledgers to track customers and vendors. Simply Accounting 2011 CertificateIn today’s competitive market, give yourself the opportunity for a better job or help improve the efficiency of your company’s operating margin. Keeping accurate track of the dollars coming in and going out is fundamental to the viability of any enterprise, particularly small businesses where the room for financial error is scant.

This 66-hour three-course computer-based program will give you the skills

you need to maintain general ledger, accounts receivable/payable, and payroll records. The program’s intermediate course adds valuable options such as inventory control procedures and key payroll functions. You will also become proficient with Microsoft Excel as you learn fundamental spreadsheet techniques and skills required for creating budgets, projections, financial statements, databases, and charts.

If you are an owner, operator, or employee in the small and medium-sized business sector you will find the Simply Accounting certificate program to be a valuable professional development opportunity.

Barry TranquadaSimply Accounting instructor, is currently working towards a CGA designation. He has been in public practice, a controller,

and an IT consultant. A second-generation accountant, he’s been using Excel and accounting software to help make businesses run better for longer than he is willing to admit, starting with his own retail store. This experience has made him incurably enthusiastic about Excel and Simply Accounting features like pivot tables, formulas, queries and reports, and how useful they can be in the real world where time is at a premium and margins are thin.

Basic Tax Tips for the Small Business OwnerLearn about basic tax saving and preparation tips from a chartered accountant who focuses on small and home-based businesses. Emphasis will be on learning the concepts and practical uses of the program as well as developing acceptable practices for electronic file management. Concentrating on two-dimensional drafting, this program teaches the use of AutoCAD using examples of drawings from various industries. A hands-on approach emphasizing practical working techniques is applied to exercises and assignments. Computer FundamentalsAfter a brief overview of computer hardware, participants will learn the basics of the Windows operating environment with emphasis on basic terminology, the desktop, icons and shortcuts, the taskbar, launching and closing applications, multi-tasking between programs, and basic Windows properties. Particular emphasis is placed on simple file and folder management, which is a fundamental requirement when working with documents. Birch Tapping and Syrup ProductionBe introduced to “sugaring off” boreal forest style. Tapping birch sap is considered “agro-forestry” and the sap itself is a “non-timber forest product” (NTFP). The workshop will focus on tree and sap physiology, backyard and commercial supplies and equipment, legislation and marketing, food safe production, culinary uses, and an introduction to other products that can be made from the birch tree. Keith Crewestarted Wood Quarry Designs in 1996 with an enthusiasm for combining creativity with function. He wanted to create products with longevity that would endure in our increasingly disposable culture. In 2001, Keith was working on a new table and thought concrete would add a new visual element to traditional project. Wanting to learn more about the medium itself, its limitations and possibilities, Keith took some advanced training in concrete mix design and structural reinforcement. The Art of PrintmakingLearn the art and style of printmaking and develop a print of your own. By examining famous artists such as Rembrandt, Durer, and Warhol, develop your own personal imagery to create an original print to take home. Connections and Contrasts in Series PaintingDesigned to open new avenues to creativity, this workshop will begin with a brief overview of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Period. Teaching in her Home Studio, Gallery Vertigo or at the Vernon Community Arts Centre, she is amazed at the way art reflects life and encourages individual expression.
