Tominimizetheoilycontentinbilgewater,whichcanbedischargedfromtheship,MARPOLhasaregulationunderANNEXIwhichlimitstheoilcontentinthebilgewaterthatvesselcanlegitimatelydischargeintothesea.ItisnowarequirementforallvesselstohaveanoildischargemonitoringandcontrolsystemalongwithanoilfilteringequipmentknownastheOilyWaterSeparator(OWS).

Heretheoilhavingadensitywhichislowerthanthatofthewater,whichmakestheformerriseintotheoilcollectingcompartmentandtherestofthenonflowingoilmixturesettledownintofinesettlingcompartmentafterpassingbetweenthecatchplates.Afteraperiodoftimemoreoilwillseparateandcollectintheoilcollectingchamber.Theoilcontentofwaterwhichpassesthroughthisunitisaround100partspermillionofoil.Acontrolvalve(pneumaticorelectronic)releasestheseparatedoilintothedesignatedOWSsludgetank.Heatermaybeincorporatedinthisunitforsmoothflowandseparationofoilandwater.

Firststagehelpsinremovingsomephysicalimpuritiestoachievefinefiltrationinthelaterstage.

TheFilterunit

Thisisaseparateunitwhoseinputcomesfromthedischargeofthefirstunit.Thisunitconsistsofthreestagesfilterstage,coalescerstageandcollectingchamber.Theimpuritiesandparticlesareseparatedbythefilterandaresettledatthebottomforremoval.Insecondstage,coalescerinducescoalescenceprocessinwhichoildropletsarejoinedtoincreasethesizebybreakingdownthesurfacetensionbetweenoildropletsinthemixture.Theselargeoilmoleculesriseabovethemixtureinthecollectingchamberandareremovedwhenrequired.Theoutputfromthisunitshouldbelessthan15ppmtofulfillegaldischargecriteria.

Thisunitfunctionstogetherintwopartsmonitoringandcontrolling.TheppmofoiliscontinuouslymonitoredbyOilContentMonitor(OCM)iftheppmishighitwillgivealarmandfeeddatatothecontrolunit.ThecontrolunitcontinuouslymonitorstheoutputsignalofOCMandifalarmarises,itwillnotallowtheoilywatertogooverboardbymeansofoperating3waysolenoidvalve.Therearenormally3solenoidvalvescommandedbycontrolunit.Thesearelocatedinthefirstunitoilcollectingchamber,secondunitoilcollectingchamberandoneindischargesideoftheoilywaterseparatorwhichisa3wayvalve.The3wayvalveinletisfromtheOWSdischarge,whereoneoutletistooverboardandsecondoutletistoOWSsludgetank.WhenOCMgivesalarm,3wayvalvedischargesoilymixtureinthesludgetank.

Theproceduresfortestingthemonitoraredetailedinthemanufacturestechnicalmanual.TheOWSsIhaveexperienceutilizeaphotosensorthatmeasurestheamountoflighthittingit.Whenoilorsedimenttravelsbetweenthelightandthephotosensor,itreducestheamountoflighthittingthesensorandcausesthemonitortodisplayaPPMofcontaminateinthewater.OntheOWSsIhaveseen,themanufactureprovidesplastictesttripsthathavebeengaugedtosimulateoilywatercontamination.Thistesttripisplacedbetweenthelightandthephotosensorthroughaninlineaccesspoint.Themonitorshoulddisplaythepredeterminedreadingwhenthistestisconducted.Shipsalsosendthesesensorsouttobetestedandcalibratedonascheduledbasis.
