OPC WORKS TOWARD WATER QUALITY LEGISLATION

The Ohio Pork Council has recently hired Kelly Morgan as manager of showpig programs, making her the point person for OPC’s Ohio Showpig Committee. Kelly is an elementary school teacher and head volleyball coach from Orient, OH. She has more than

20 years of experience in the showpig industry and is passionate about youth education and development.

“Kelly’s experiences, organizational skills and motivation will make her an asset to the Ohio Pork Council as the Committee continues to develop projects and programs focused on aiding Ohio’s youth swine exhibitors and breeders,” said Marlene Eick, Chair of OPC’s Ohio Showpig Committee.

In an effort to better serve members and increase youth participation, OPC, through work with the Ohio Showpig Committee, will soon be unveiling details for an enhanced summer show circuit to allow youth the opportunity to exhibit swine at jackpot shows across the state beginning in May, 2015.

In an effort to improve and protect the state’s water supply, Ohio’s House and Senate have been working on pending water quality legislation, which works to decrease phosphorus runoff in Lake Erie’s western basin.

The Ohio Pork Council has been involved in the process, leading the effort, alongside other livestock organizations, on behalf of agriculture.

“The overwhelming majority of Ohio’s hog farmers have already taken into action best management practices and work toward protecting the land and natural resources, every day,” said Bill Knapke, Ohio Pork Council President. “It is our hope that other contributors to the Lake Erie algae blooms follow agriculture’s leadership and help work toward a solution.”

Ohio’s livestock farmers are committed to being good stewards of the land. Through utilizing innovative methods of operation and adhering to best management practices, farmers are able to work toward continued improvement and protection of our state’s valuable natural resources. While over-regulation is always a concern for agriculture, this legislation, while it may create certain challenges in livestock and poultry production, is a positive step toward improving and preserving Ohio’s water supply.

OPC’s online presence continues to grow, through the popularity of the Ohio Hog Farmers Facebook page; which is used by the Ohio Pork Council to interact with consumers, encourage conversations and share information regarding pork and modern agriculture.

Having more than 200,000 fans, the page has seen an increase of more than 66,000 fans, or “likes”, since February, 2014. Hosting a larger audience is an excellent way to extend the reach of content created and shared by Ohio Hog Farmers. In Fact, OHF content had an overall organic reach of more than 13,000,000 during the last six months of 2014.

“Our goal with social media is to serve as a resource for information about pigs, pork and farming,” said Bill Knapke, Ohio Pork Council President. “OPC is dedicated to providing consumers with the information they seek and encourages open conversation about food and how it is grown.”
