A Message from the OADE President

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the entire OADE Board, welcome to the 31st Annual OADE conference!

OADE’s Mission simply is to “Empower Learners.” But how do we “empower” our learners who often

feel powerless in an education system? Our students often have experienced failure, frustration,

overwhelming life obstacles, and hopelessness. With declining resources and inadequate support

structures, addressing students’ educational, social, and emotional needs has become an enormous

challenge.

But our Mission is not just about our students: “Empowering Learners” includes every one of us. It is

essential that we continue to learn and grow as educators so that that we can protect the access to

opportunity for our students and provide them with meaningful, effective learning experiences. This

conference provides sessions to promote professional growth, the forum for open discussions on

current topics, and the opportunity to make collegial connections and form a network of professional

support.

Together we can turn failure into a success story and hopelessness into hope. We make a difference

every day!

9:15-10:00, Keynote Address by Dr. Hunter Boylan, Director, National Center for Developmental

Education

Our 2014 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Hunter R. Boylan

"The Fate of Developmental Education: It's Not as Bad as It Looks"

First, let it be noted that Dr. Boylan has deep Buckeye roots, having grown up in the Steubenville area.

He proceeded to earn his bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Miami University and a

Ph.D. in higher education from Bowling Green State University.

One of the few recognizable stars of developmental Education, Dr.

Hunter Boylan, is probably best known as the Director of the

National Center for Developmental Education at Appalachian State

University in Boone, NC, where he is also a Professor of Higher

Education. This is also the home of what NADE members fondly call

“the Kellogg,” meaning the Kellogg Institute for the Training and

Certification of Developmental Educators which Dr. Boylan founded

and directs to this day. He is also the founder of Research in

Developmental Education and a member of the Editorial Boards of

the Journal of Developmental Education, the Journal of Teaching

and Learning, and the international Journal of Innovation,

Research, and Policy in Education. His publications are voluminous,

but one that received much attention recently was his refutation of

the many attacks launched on developmental education,

“Addressing Flawed Research in Developmental Education,” co-

written with Alexandros M. Goudas(Journal of Developmental

Education, Fall 2012).

He is the former Chairperson of the American Council of Developmental Education Associations and the

former President of the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE). He has received

NADE awards for “Outstanding Leadership”, “Outstanding Research,” and “Outstanding Publication.” In

1996, NADE designated its award for “Outstanding Research Publication,” the “Hunter R. Boylan Award”

in honor of his contributions to research in the field. In 2009 the Association for the Tutoring Profession

named their research scholarship the “Hunter R. Boylan Research Award.” In 2011, the National College

Learning Center Association named their research scholarship “The Hunter R. Boylan Research

Scholarship.” Dr. Boylan is regarded as one of the “founding fathers” of NADE, serving as president

1981-83 and remaining highly active to this day as a researcher, outspoken advocate, and consultant to

NADE members.

Concurrent Sessions l 10:15 – 11:15 Room 409 Session 1 10:15 – 11:15 Ellen Brook, PhD, Associate Professor of Mathematics, Cuyahoga Community College Kristine Glasener, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Cuyahoga Community College Strand: Math Title: Investigating the Adult Learners’ Experience when Solving Mathematical Word Problems Summary: This is a presentation about the extensive research conducted on adult mathematics education. The research methodology was multiple case studies. The participants were developmental students enrolled in a beginning algebra course at a local community college. The word problems selected were chosen from a traditional style textbook. ____________________________________________________________________________ Room 407 Session l 10:15 – 11:15 Frank Bely, Annually Contracted Faculty, Developmental Mathematics, Sinclair Community College Strand: Math Title: Number Rules Summary: This session will help participants guide developmental math students to develop a logical system of numeration. Practical tips will be given to assist in this process, designed to help students have a sense of how numbers work. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Summary: During this session, a panel of Stark State College reading instructors will share how

they have redesigned the reading curriculum stemming from best practices gathered through

Completion By Design (CBD) initiatives and developmental research. Critical Analysis IDS102 (a

pre-requisite for many classes) will contextualize skills to students’ majors by offering sections

specific to content in their major classes. Also, information regarding our first experience with

the reading boot camp will be spotlighted as well as future plans to assist student accelerate

through their developmental sequence courses.

Ed., Full-Time Writing Instructor, Shawnee State University Keri Gibson, Writing Center Tutor and Student, Shawnee State University Strand: Writing and Writing Centers

Title: Developmental Writing and Writing Centers: Research, Policies, and Best Practices

Summary: This presentation will provide participants a brief history of the relationship between

writing centers and developmental education, a primer to writing center pedagogies, and some

useful strategies for incorporating the writing center in the classroom based on research in the

field and the presenters’ experiences.

Ruth Silon, Director, Student Success Center, Ohio Association for Community Colleges Hunter Boylan, Director, National Center for Developmental Education, Appalachian State University Strand: Administration Title: Managing Developmental Education to Maximize Student Success (and Budgets!)

Summary: This session is a follow-up to Dr. Hunter Boylan’s Keynote speech. It will include a question

and answer /panel discussion addressing some of the most challenging issues in Developmental

Education. Ruth Silon, the Executive Director of OACC’s Student Support Center will moderate the

session. Joining Dr. Boylan on the panel will be: Dean Allison Todd (Columbus State), Dean Will Wells

(Rhodes State) and Dean Robbin Hoopes (Cincinnati State).

Summary: This presentation will explain how using a flipped classroom as well as implementing

a lab component can foster collaboration in math courses at the developmental level.

Attendees will receive example materials, as well as considerations for implementation.

Room 402 1:00 – 2:00 Stephanie Alexander, PhD, Director of Student Success, University of Rio Grande/Rio Grande Community College Strand: Reading, Writing, Curriculum Design – Acceleration Models Title: Do You Hear The People Sing? The Critical Role Design Plays in Creating Successful Accelerated Developmental Education English Programs Summary: This presentation features 3 successful accelerated developmental English course

designs offered at a small state community college in WV. Initially designed to satisfy the

demand for “dev ed reform,” these courses not only offered “accelerated” academics, but also

attended to the affective needs of community college students.

Strand: Reading, Academic Language

Title: Words as Tools: What Postsecondary Literacy Instructors Need to Know About Academic

Language

Summary: Academic language proficiency refers to the ability to understand and use the

specialized language practices of the academic disciplines in order to learn and communicate

within them. This presentation will explore the features and function of academic language

with an emphasis on how to build academic language through disciplinary literacy instruction.

Room 404 1:00 – 2:00 Barbara Gilbert, Associate Professor, Sinclair Community College Strand: Administration, Acceleration in Math, Reading, and Writing Title: Still Accelerating Students in DEV ED Summary: This presentation will outline the steps taken in Developmental Education courses in the Developmental Language Arts and Developmental Math Departments at Sinclair Community College to accelerate students by combining coursework and curriculum in math, reading, and writing. Attendees will leave with course descriptions, textbook recommendations, and syllabi for these new integrated math, reading, and writing courses. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Zane State College, Washington State College, and Mid-East Career and Technology Centers’ ABLE program will hold a panel discussion about how placement test cut off scores are used to determine a student’s referral to ABLE, the transition and preparation services for students, and the students’ return to college.

Strand: Math Title: Developmental Algebra: Where Dreams Go to Die Summary: Nobody ever decided “Student that can’t simplify a complex rational expression should NOT get a college degree.” Instead of continuing to force-feed traditional algebra to students that don’t want it and don’t find it useful, let’s design a new course that provides useful skills for non-STEM students. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Summary: An active learning session on developmental reading assessments that looks at

various ways to assess student learning. Participants will begin the creation of an assessment

that can be used with their own classes.

Sharmaine Pechac, Program Manager, OACC AmeriCorps College Completion Coaches Program, Strand: Administration, Reading, Math, Writing Title: The OACC Student Success Center – Helping Community Colleges Move Forward Together

Summary: In 2012, the OACC Student Success Center was formed to support Ohio’s 23 community colleges as they reform developmental education. The work of the Center, snap shots of ten best practices in Ohio’s colleges, and details on the OACC’s College Completion Coaching program will be presented. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Title: Placement Boot Camps…What a difference a week makes!

Summary: Various strategies are useful for preparing or possibly advancing developmental

students to college level coursework in as short a time as possible. This session will discuss

results from one such strategy to offer a COMPASS Boot Camp in order to help increase the

placement results. We will discuss suggestions and lessons learned for anyone considering or

already offering similar placement workshops.

Session lV 3:30 – 4:30 Room 409 3:30 – 4:30 Shawn Bixler, Acting Director of the Department of Developmental Programs, University of Akron Bonnie Filer-Tubaugh, Senior Lecturer in Math - Division of Department of Developmental Programs, University of Akron Tom Johnson, Lead Faculty, Senior Lecturer in Math - Division of Department of Developmental Programs, University of Akron Strand: Math, Acceleration Title: Zipping through Developmental Math at U of Akron: Diving the Semester to Help Struggling Students Summary: Often by midterm it’s clear that underprepared math students are already likely to fail. At the University of Akron, the math faculty developed a series of four half-semester course, as well as subsequent study strategy courses, so that students could restart the second half of the semester. We will share our process, the problems we’ve encountered so far and how we addressed them, as well as our progress during this first semester of split classes.

In this session, we will explore the rich history of developmental education and how that history compares and contrasts with the present. Title: Building Success in Basic Writing: Using Scaffolding Tools and Methods

Summary: Basic Writing students CAN meet high standards. Using presentation and audience

interaction, four panelists will share “scaffolding” methods and tools that help each Basic

Writing student build motivation and learning throughout the semester and produce a deeply-

revised course portfolio at the end of the term.
