A LITTLE HISTORY: 2011 marks the 118th season ointercollegiate ootball at the University o South Caroli-na, dating back to 1892. It is the 105th-consecutive yearin which South Carolina has competed on the gridiron.The University did not eld a team in either 1893 or1906. Carolina owns an all-time record o 543-541-44.

SEC HISTORY: The 2011 season marks South Caro-lina’s 20th year in the Southeastern Con erence. SouthCarolina and Arkansas joined the league prior to the1992 campaign. The Gamecocks earned their rst SECEastern Division title in the 2010 season.

VS. EAST CAROLINA: The Gamecocks lead the all-time series vs. East Carolina by a 10-5 margin. SouthCarolina won each o the rst eight meetings betweenthe two squads rom 1977-1990. ECU has won ve othe last seven contests, with the last game coming inthe 1999 season.

SPURRIER VS. ECU: Carolina head coach SteveSpurrier has never aced the Prates as a head coach.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES: East Carolina posted a

6-7 mark in 2010 in Ru n McNeill’s rst year at thehelm, including a 51-20 loss to Maryland in the Mili-tary Bowl, held at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.Quarterback Dominique Davis returns to lead an o ensethat averaged nearly 37 points per game while rackingup over 437 yards o o ense, ranking in the top 25 inthe country in both categories. De ensively, they surren-dered 44 points per contest while giving up nearly 480yards o o ense, ranking 119th and 120, respectively,among Division I programs.

GAMECOCKS VS. C-USA: Carolina owns a 19-13record in 32 meetings against teams who currentlyplay in Con erence USA, including a 10-5 mark againstECU. HEAD COACH STEVE SPURRIER

Steve Spurrier, who has coached a national championship team, won sevenSoutheastern Con erence titles, garnered nine con erence Coach o the Yearawards, and won over 70 percent o the college games in which he has coached,begins his seventh season as head coach at the University o South Carolina. Spur-rier was introduced as Carolina’s 32nd head coach on Nov. 23, 2004.

Coach Spurrier has compiled a 186-73-2 (.716) won-loss record in 21 seasonsas a major college head coach, including a 44-33 mark (.571) at Carolina. He led

the Duke Blue Devils to the 1989 Atlantic Coast Con erence championship be orereturning to his alma mater, the University o Florida, as head coach in 1990. Dur-ing his 12 seasons with the Gators, Spurrier’s teams won seven Southeastern Con-

erence championships, one national title and nished ranked in the nation’s top 10nine times. His record at Florida was an amazing 122-27-1 (.817). Spurrier, whowon the 1966 Heisman Trophy as a quarterback or the Gators, was also head coacho the NFL’s Washington Redskins (2002-03). He returned to the college ranks in2005 a ter a one-year absence rom the sidelines.

In his rst season at South Carolina, Coach Spurrier led the Gamecocks to a7-5 record and a second-place nish in the SEC Eastern Division. In doing so, heposted a ve-game winning streak, the 15th-consecutive year in which he has hada ve-game winning streak, something no other coach in college history has ac-complished. He was honored as the SEC Coach o the Year by the Associated Press

a ter leading the Gamecocks to a school-record ve straight SEC wins, their rstwin ever at Tennessee and their rst win over Florida since the 1930s. It was theeighth time he has been honored as his league’s Coach o the Year.

He came back with an 8-5 record in 2006, just the ninth time in school historythat the Gamecocks posted eight or more wins in a season. The season was cappedwith a victory in the Liberty Bowl over Con erence USA champion Houston. Withthat win, Spurrier matched Joe Morrison or the most wins by a Carolina headcoach in his rst two seasons in Columbia.

In his third season with the Garnet & Black, Spurrier’s squad raced out to a6-1 record and moved as high as No. 6 in the BCS rankings, be ore nishing thecampaign with a 6-6 record. With 21 wins, he set the Carolina record or coachingvictories a ter three seasons at the helm.

With a 7-6 record in 2008, Carolina returned to a New Year’s Day bowl game orthe rst time since the 2001 season. The Gamecocks ollowed that up with another7-6 record in 2009, their sixth consecutive non-losing season, the longest stretchin school history since 1928-34. The 2009 season included a win over No. 4 OleMiss, only the second time in school history that Carolina has de eated a top- veteam.

His 2010 Gamecock squad posted several milestones en route to a 9-5 season,the biggest o which was the school’s rst SEC Eastern Division title and rst ap-pearance in the SEC Championship. The Gamecocks also de eated the nation’s No.1 team, Alabama, or the rst time in school history, and nished the season ranked22nd in both major national polls. He was named SEC Coach o the Year or theseventh time, his ninth overall Coach o the Year honor.
