During the Q&A of Johnny Hendrix’s Chocó, the film that culminated the 2013 Colombian Film Festival, a woman born in Quibdó who was touched by the film recounted how its scenes al-lowed her to travel back home after 20 years of living in the United States. On that day, I realized that we had accomplished the goal of connecting our country with its diaspora in New York City. We had been successful at transforming the invisible bond that connects us with our roots into one that sheds the light on the great location that is Colombia with its shades and textures that takes us through it all to live new stories on a multicolored guided tour led by our magical cinematic talent.
This year’s festival becomes more competitive following that same principle of unification and repatriation. This window that we have opened up here in Manhattan puts the spotlight on Latin America so that the people of New York and the world can enjoy a Latin Ameri-can cinema that’s continuously growing and that thanks to its talents stands undisputedly in the lead of a rapidly changing industry.
We return once again to Tribeca Cinemas, our embassy of Colombian and now Latin American cinema in Manhattan. Here at Tribeca Cin-emas, we will enjoy a selection of 18 feature films and 20 short films, 11 of which were curated by Bogoshorts Film Festival and that will be in competition for 5 days. I hope that you enjoy these 38 film produc-tions as much as I enjoyed them during the selection process. On that note, I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who partici-pated; the selection process was very difficult due to the great quality and quantity of films submitted. I am sure that throughout this long journey of our cinema, we will be here in this wonderful home enjoy-ing your new works.
I would like to dedicate this film festival to my parents, who instilled in me the tenacity that I needed to make many of my dreams, like the Colombian Film Festival, a reality.
I am grateful to all of you for believing in our talent and for accepting our invitation to return to our home…through film.
As a war reporter in Colombia during the late 1990’s, I reported my country’s painful drama
from the front lines. Ten years ago, I embraced a new career oppor-tunity to migrate to the United States and worked for the Colombi-an Government where I was responsible for managing the office of Cultural Affairs in the Colombian Consulate of New York. As a proud native of Colombia, I watched from afar as my country rose from its ashes. Colombia has built a strong economy where art, culture, and film continue to gain recognition internationally demonstrating our talent, quality, and creativity.
We created the Colombian Film Festival with the purpose of showing our fascinating country and culture through film. We are giving artists the opportunity to be recognized beyond the boundaries of our coun-try. We are creating a networking platform between the film industries of Colombia, Latin America, and the U.S. We are focused and driven to promote Colombia as the new mecca for Latin American Film. We have built the bridge between Colombia and the rest of world through the power of CINEMA.

Message from the ColombianAmbassador Luis Carlos Villegas
Colombia has been growing rapidly in many fronts and the film industry is no exception. Our coun-try’s GDP per capita has increased from USD $2,500 in 2000 to more than USD $8,000 in 2013. This growth in GDP per capita is clearly reflected in
the movie industry where the number of movie attendants in Colom-bia has more than doubled from 20.7 million in 2007 to 43.7 million in 2013.Before the Film Law was implemented in 2003, an average of 4 mov-ies was produced annually, and from then on the film production in Colombia blossomed. In 2012, thanks to the Film Development Fund, 23 films were released. This effort was later complemented by the Law Filming in Colombia of 2012 that invites film producers from all over the world to film in our country by offering cash rebate or cash reim-bursement for films partially or totally produced in Colombia.Simul-taneously, we have also improved our capacities to produce TV series and films, through our state of the art studios in Bogotá.
Thank you to CFFNY for helping Colombia show these accomplish-ments proudly.

The town of Puerto Berrío sits on a bend in Colombia’s Magdalena River. For over 30 years, local townspeople have fished out the remains of victims of violence drifting downstream. Ordinarily, these unidenti-fied corpses, known as NNs (No Names), would be destined for a mass grave. How-ever, for decades, local townspeople have adopted these bodies and given them names; they decorate their tombs and bring them water, gifts and flowers. In ex-change, it is believed that the living are awarded protection and special favors.

Colombia is amazingly beautiful and seems specially created by nature to nurture the dreams of filmmakers in search of the one place capable of providing an entire range of gorgeous scenery perfect for creating a magnificent film. All of Colombia’s regions exemplify the incredible ecological, environmental, ra-cial, architectural and cultural variety that characterizes the country and, for the most part, cities, villages, agricultural zones, countryside and forests are easily visited. Each of these regions features cold, cool and hot climates and in only 2-3 hours you can travel from high mountains over 3 000 meters (9 800 feet) above sea level to warm weather regions at sea level, except in the Amazon region where the entire ter-ritory is one huge tropical jungle. Every one of these regions offers the right setting for a huge array of audiovisual productions.
