This is the formal announcment of the Second Wave of Official Selection Film annoucements for the 2012 edition of the 24fps International Short Film Festival. 24fps, now in its 14th year, is a curated exhibtion and juried comeption of short film sfrom around the world. All films are exhibited in the landmark Paramount Theatre, a restored 1930 movie palace on the National Register of Historic Places. Public exhibtions are November 2-3, 2012.

El Somriure Amagat(The Hidden Smile)Director: VENTURA DURALLWriter: Ventura Durall, Miguel LlansóProducers: Ventura Duvall, Nanouk FilmsSpain, Documentary, 13 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: The film follows a 10-year-old Ethiopian child to construct a realistic tale about the values that flourish in a society formed by children.

Director VENTURA DURALL was born in Barcelona and is a scriptwriter, director, and producer. In 2000 he established the production company, Nanouk Films, with the intention of creating an artistic frame of reference in the Catalan and European audiovisual scene and a new canal of communication between documentary and fiction films. Durall is the head of the documentary department at his alma mater, ESCAC (Escola Superior de Cinema i Audiovisuals de Catalunya), where he supervises all diploma thesis projects and leads the Documentary and

Society Master Program.

HopeDirector: PEDRO PIRESWriter: Marie BrassardProducers: Phoebe Greenberg, Penny MancusoCanada, Narrative, 11 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: The fragmented violence of war as seen through the eyes of a general on his deathbed. The film is based on the award-winning play “Jimmy, créature de rêve” by Marie Brassard.

Director PEDRO PIRES was born in Nantes, France but grew up in Quebec City. He is a director, scriptwriter, and creator of special effects. He studied fine arts at the Laval University and computer graphics at the National Animation and Design Centre in Montreal. Founded the “Pedro Pires Inc.” film production company (2007). His directing debut, the short film “Danse Macabre” (2009), is the voice of a mature artist, and placed him among the most promising and original Canadian artists.

DonkeyDirector: KEIR BURROWSWriter: Keir BurrowsProducers: Dieudonnee Burrows, Keir BurrowsUK, Narrative, 6 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: A chance encounter with someone he bullied when they were both children causes a man to reassess his values.

Director KEIR BURROWS was born and raised in South Africa, but now calls London his home. His films have screened at a large

number of festivals worldwide, including the Carolina Film & Video Festival, the UK Film Festival, Short Sharp (Australia), the London Short Film Festival, the Boston Science Fiction Film Festival, and the London Sci-Fi Film Festival. In 2011 he won Best First-Time Director for his debut short film. “Air,” at the Colorado Film Awards. He is currently working on his debut feature film about the invention of wormhole technology.

Following are the ten films named Official Selections in this Second Wave announcement for our 2012 festival. Twelve additional films will be announced over the next month, bringing the competition and public exhibition selection total to thirty films.

FoxesDirector: LORCAN FINNEGANWriter: Garret ShanleyProducer: Brunella CocchigliaIreland, Narrative, 15 min., 2012SYNOPSIS: A young couple trapped in a remote estate of empty houses and shrieking foxes are beckoned from their isolation into a twilight world. A world of the paranormal or perhaps insanity.

Director LORCAN FINNEGAN was born in Dublin, where he worked for Charlie Brooker’s Zeppotron production company

as a motion designer, editor, and director. In 2004 he moved back to Dublin and set up the studio Lovely Productions. Lorcan has written and directed several award-winning short films, TV commercials, and music videos for clients as diverse as MTV, Universal Music, Motorola, Sony Playstation and the Irish Film Board.

Rolling on the Floor LaughingDirector: RUSSELL HARBAUGHWriter: Russell HarbaughProducer: Michael PrallUSA, Narrative, 20 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: Two grown sons return home for their widowed mother’s birthday, only to find themselves competing with a strange man for her attention.

Director RUSS HARBAUGH holds a MFA in Film from Columbia University School of the Arts. This is his thesis film for that program. Russ was the assistant to Eric Mendelsohn on the 2011 film “3 Backyards,” which earned the Best DIrector award at Sundance 2010.

MoxieDirector: STEPHEN IRWINWriter: Stephen IrwinProducer: Stephen IrwinUK, Animation, 6 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: A pyromaniac bear misses his mother.

Director STEPHEN IRWIN is a graduate of Central St. Martins College of Art & Design. His film “The Black Dog’s Progress” won the Best Short Film award at the 2010 British Animation Awards. He

has received commissions from the UK Film Council & Film London, BBC New Talent, Warp Films, and Animate Projects. His films have been screened at Sundance, Annecy, Zagreb, Edinburgh, Ann Arbor and Clermont-Ferrand. He was named as one of Animation Magazines Rising Stars of Animation 2009.

Director KAT CANDLER has award-winning films that have screened at Sundance, the Austin Film Festival, SXSW, Slamdance,

Florida Film Festival, Chicago International Children’s Film Festival, and PBS. Candler is a film Lecturer at the University of Texas and Texas State University.

Long Distance InformationDirector: DOUGLAS HARTWriter: Douglas HartProducer: Ohna FalbyUK, Narrative, 8 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: Father always told us, “Never talk to strangers,”...But surely we have to phone home sometimes?

Director DOUGLAS HART was the bass guitarist and founding member of the

Scottish band The Jesus and Mary Chain. He has since gone on to direct over 80 music videos for bands as diverse as The Pet Shop Boys, Pete Doherty, and The Libertines. In 2009 he directed the documentary “Manic Street Preachers: Shadows and Words.” This short film is his first foray into drama.

But after her mother’s unexpected death, she is forced to return to her rural hometown--a place where her sensual flair is not welcome.

Director ZOÉ SALICRUP JUNCO was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and

graduated from NYU film school. She has collaborated on more than 15 short films as a writer, director, and producer--including “Forgive & Forget,” and “Pickpockets.” This is her NYU thesis film.

Las PalmasDirector: JOHANNES NYHOLMWriter: Johannes NyholmProducer: Johannes NyholmSweden, Narrative, 13 min., 2011SYNOPSIS: A middle-aged lady on a holiday in the sun tries to make new friends and have a good time. The role is played by a one year old girl, the rest of the cast are marionette puppets.

Director JOHANNES NYHOLM is an artist and film director based in Gothenburg,

Sweden. His work is usually presented in a wide range of forms, and his animated film series “The Tale of Little Puppetboy” screened at The DIrector’s Fortnight in Cannes. His music videos have been distributed on TV, but have also shown widely in galleries and at film festivals. He has founded his own production company, Joclo, which specializes in a “a fusion of high and low culture.”
