Sometimes there was laugh- ter but there was always a feeling of anticipation for a spectacular new biennium! Encouragement came in the form of several dynamic and motivating speakers. Sara Ford Walston inspired sisters to take a look at their inner selves to determine if they were coura- geous and challenged us to become more so in our daily lives. Ms. Walston taught sisters the original meaning of the word courage, from the heart and spirit, and encouraged us to use this definition in our personal and professional lives. She reminded us that courage does not just come in big, heroic packages but could be as simple as making a change in your life or deciding to support someone in need. Kate Campbell Stevenson was a thought evoking speaker as well as an incredible singer and an accomplished actress. Kate used her talents to portray women who have impacted history, the world, and our individual lives. During the third general session, Kate depicted the lives of Betsey Coleman, Eleanor Roos- evelt, and Rachel Carson. Each of these women had the courage to make a difference in the world while over- coming incredible obstacles. Betsey Coleman was an African American woman who made strides in the world of flight two years pri- or to Amelia Earhart. She had the courage to prove herself in a world where her skin color and her gender were seen as negative attributes. Ms. Stevenson then depictedE- leanor Roosevelt, another coura- geous and powerful woman. Despite being a quiet and shy young woman, she overcame these attributes to be- come an influential speaker and to help her husband remain strong in politics. Finally, Kate Campbell Stevenson brought Rachel Carson to life right before our eyes. Rachel was a scientist who was concerned with chemicals destroying our environment and used her knowledge to speak with the legislature. She is respon- sible for much of our environmental legislation today. Ms. Stevenson inspires all women to be con- scious of the stories they are writing as they make ev- eryday decisions and challenges women to “Make a Difference.” Every day is an opportunity to make a dif- ference. 2 Psi State News Fall 2013

Golden Greetings from GailDear Psi State Sisters, Welcome to the 2013 – 2015 Psi State biennium! We are going for gold in all aspects of our state society! All of our members are Georgia Gold. We certainly want to increase our membership by drawing gold standard quality. For this biennium I ask that each of you “pan” for more Georgia Gold, that is, potential members for Delta Kappa Gamma. As you do this, keep in mind the gold standard; those who brilliantly shine as outstanding educators. We do not, however, want to forget the golden members we have now. We have members we can reinstate and those to recruit. Be a support for each other. Have chapter meetings of interest for your chapter members. Take time to have fun together. Go out for lunch, coffee, or to an antique store for shopping. Make a friendly visit or phone call.

As you plan for your chapter year, start with a Chapter Action Plan (CHAP). Take a look at where you are and set goals for where you would like to be as a successful chapter. Using these goals, decide who will be responsible for accomplishing the goals and the timeline to get them done. If you need assistance with this task, help is available on the DKG.org website with suggestions to achieve your chapter goals. Contact any Psi State officer or Strategic Action Plan (SAP) committee member, all of whom will be happy to assist. Our goal for every Psi State chapter is to have a CHAP in place during this biennium. Be one of the first!

Our officers, committee chairs, and district directors are shining as they have been planning for a golden biennium with members as the focus! Psi State’s leadership team is gearing up for all our members to be involved in our golden society. Opportunities abound! Please get involved and take advantage of these! The benefits of being a member are beyond measure. Networking opportunities, scholarships, grants, seminars, conferences, conventions, Delta-hostel, meetings of interest, leadership, and other similar programs are available to help our golden educators unite “in genuine spiritual fellowship.”

You are needed for our golden, biennium goals to be accomplished. Each member is vital as we can only achieve if we work together! I look forward to working with you, our Georgia Gold! Make plans now to join us on the September 28, 2013 at 9:00 AM for our first Executive Board and Membership meeting of the biennium. Make your reservation today!

Its official! The “Georgia Peaches” presented the invitation to the 2015 Southeast Regional Conference that will be held in Savannah on July 15-18, 2015 at the recent Southeast Regional Conference in Kissimmee. Wearing their conference aprons, the Georgia contingency handed out buttons and magazines promoting the future regional conference during the last general session. Mary Willis of the Psi State Technology Committee, created a powerful video that was shown to showcase the beautiful city of Savannah and invite DKG members to our state in 2015.

Savannah is an exciting venue to entertain our DKG sisters from far and wide. The Westin Harbor Resort and Spa will be the loca-tion. The Westin has everything that one could imagine to make for a comfortable and memorable experience.

Now it is time to roll up our sleeves and begin our journey in planning this event. SERC 2015 promises to be extraordinary with the help of our chapters across the state. First and foremost, please put the conference dates on your calendar and plan to attend. Talk up the conference in your chapters and support the steering committee as you are called on (individually or by chapter) to help.

Our first huge task will be to raise funds for a spectacular “Georgia Night”, convention bag items, and other fun events. If you have a connection to a vendor or corporation that would donate goods or financial support, I need to hear from you. Do you have connec-tions with talent in the Savannah area or suggestions for incredible speakers? I need to hear from you! Do you have a great idea? I need to hear from you!

Growing and Glowing for DKG:Educational Excellence!

You’re looking for a way to become more involved in Delta Kappa Gamma, but you’re not quite ready to take on a leadership roll? You may be interested in learning more about the Educational Excellence Com-mittee (EEC). It is a multifaceted committee/program that endorses in-ternational goals and projects in addition to our State’s projects. In brief, the EEC: impacts law and policy, empowers women, and increases global awareness. Some of the ways the EEC achieves these goals include: - Promote Schools for Africa- Through School for Africa project, nearly five million children will gain access to quality basic education. This project focuses on girls, orphans, and vulnerable children. DKG’s partnership with UNICEF will train more than 100,000 teachers and build or rehabilitate approximately 1,000 schools. -Support Early-Career Educators- Do you know that currently the US rate of teachers leaving this profession is 10% in the first year, 50% by year three, and 70% by year five? Other countries are experienc-ing similar challenges. SEE (Supporting Early-Career Educators) en-courages members/chapters to be creative in support of educators with zero to five years experience. This includes beginning teachers, as well as, educators assuming new positions/roles. Each chapter is asked to keep a record of the time invested through member support.- Promote the DKG/UN relationship- DKG has partnered with UNI-CEF to support education in developing countries. DKG also has rep-resentatives on CTAUN (Committee for Teaching about the United Nations) to promote awareness about the UN.

Membership Matters! I recently read the following and thought it was worth sharing. “Do you remember when you were asked to become a member of Delta Kappa Gamma? Why did you say, “Yes”? For most of us, it was for one or more of these reasons: respect for the person inviting you, the fact that someone saw a potential for excellence in you, a desire to be part of a prestigious organization, a desire to be part of a network of key women educators, and/or a desire to improve your leadership skills.”

“When you were initiated, were you enthusiastic, energetic, and eager? Are you still? If you are a new member, do you make an effort to get to know veteran members and draw on their knowledge? Veteran members, have you shared your experience and knowledge with your chapter members or your state organization and beyond?” (Kappa State News, Winter 2013, Cathy Long)

These questions made me step back and think about myself and Delta Kappa Gamma. How do the questions make you feel? Are you still enthusiastic, energetic, and eager? If not, please delve deeply into yourself and find out why and then think about what you can do to get back that enthusiasm. How can you help others regain that eagerness and energy?

As I stated at Planning Day, the member is the heart of our Society and staying in communication with each member is important. The chapter is the vehicle for meaningful com-munication. Stay connected through phone calls, emails, and newsletters.

As you begin your new school year, keep in mind that efforts to gain membership must continue. Two actions should be of primary importance to chapters. First, nurture current members. A strong chapter with members who ap-preciate the benefits of membership is more likely to thrive. Second, attract new members. Share the good news of membership and invite others to join.

Retain, Reinstate and Recruit. The number one priority is for all chapters is to RETAIN their current members. Retaining members means we need to reach out to sisters and stay connected. The next priority is to REINSTATE. We need to find out why members drop out and invite them back. The last priority is RECRUITING. We need to energize our chapters with new members who can share their enthusiasm, personal and professional experiences, and their energy. Once we invite strong candidates for membership, we need to communicate our mission and purposes and inform them about our chapters’ activities and programs. So let’s set the Gold Standard in DKG by Retaining, Reinstating, and Recruiting.

If your chapter needs support in its efforts regarding membership, please contact the Psi State Membership Committee.

CTAUN Grant Winners in DKG The 2012 CTAUN Best Practices Award was presented to Delta Kappa Gamma sisters in Alpha Alpha State, Pennsylvania, for their project, “Hey Sister Can You Spare a Pair?” State President, Louann Shrader and Karen Bell, Projects Chair, accepted the award.

The 2012 CTAUN theme, “Education is a Human Right” was a great fit for the DKG vision, ‘Leading Women Educators Impacting Education Worldwide’ and our support of Schools for Africa. “Hey, Sister Can you spare a Pair?” focused on education as a human right and DKG’s need to strive to impact education globally.

In many African countries young women are denied the right to attend school during their menstrual cycle. “Project Patricia”, a project that provides reusable feminine hygiene pads to young woman in Third World countries encountered a larger problem; young women needed the undergarments to support use of the pads. That is where “Hey Sister Can you spare a Pair?” provides support. Members of Alpha Alpha State collected over 3,800 pairs of cotton panties to assure young women the right to an education. What better way to impact education worldwide!

Georgia Gold, can you think of a great way to “Impact Edcation Worldwide”?If so, maybe you can be the winner of the 2014 CTAUN grant and help students develop their global civic identity and understand that their decisions have an impact around the world.

In addition to pertinent training and wonderful speakers, sisters were able to attend breakout sessions that met both their personal and professional needs. These workshops were varied in theme and purpose. There was a workshop for everyone! Some members learned to “Google their Work”, using Google Docs and the Google Drive. Others learned about the ar-cheaology of Florida from Doctor Rachel Wentz and loved every minute of it. Still others learned about publishing, using Adobi InDesign and were able to practice in a computer lab.

There was a Weebly workshop for sisters who wanted to learn how to design their own website and a Bring Your Own Device session for those sisters courageous enough to let children bring technology into the class-room. If sisters wanted to learn more about the society of Delta Kappa Gamma, they could attend sessions about Strategic Action Plans, scholarships, and lead-ership. There was something interesting, informative, and life affirming for everyone!

Dr. Hanna Fowler and the Southeast Regional Com-mittee planned a fantastic conference and the sisters in attendance were grateful for their hard work and dedication to Delta Kappa Gamma.

Chapter PrideAlpha Alpha begins the school year collecting school supplies to donate to schools in the middle of the year when supplies become scarce. In October, they provide a Grant-in-Aid to a perspective educator enrolled in a college program. Funds for the grant are raised through book sales and a holiday auction.

Alpha and Beta Nu will hold a combined Ladies Tea and Bazaar. It will feature a tea party setting where members will sell their old costume jewelry and purses. The ladies are calling this, “Tea with Old Bags”!

Beta Delta will continue their project, “School in a Bag,” for a second year. They collect school supplies in a two gal-lon Ziploc bag for area Title I schools. Beta Delta will also continue to host “Dinner with a Purpose” to raise money for teacher grants.

Alpha Beta has begun to collect amusing stories and sage advice to be placed into a volume that will serve to Support Early Career Educators. This will be distributed along with an assorment of goodies to welcome new educators to the field.

Delta Alpha provides refreshments for the monthly “New Teacher” meetings and staff training sessions. These sessions are for all new teachers to the county.

Iota purchased dictionaries for all third graders in Rome City and Floyd County School Systems. They plan to con-tinue this project for the 2013-2014 school year. They are also discussing plans to help other grade levels.

Iota awarded a medal to one outstanding senior in each of their four high schools. These medals were given to students in the Teacher Apprentice Program at the Floyd County College and Career Academy.

Xi Chapter donated ten Walmart gift cards in the amount of twenty dollars to Early Career Educators during New Teacher Induction in Dougherty County. All new educators were also given a book mark welcoming them to education from Delta Kappa Gamma.

New Teachers accept Walmart gift cards and bookmarks from Xi President.
