Lions Club of Malanda Inc

Issue 12 : June 2016

Greetings to all of our District Lions—and to all who share bulletins

NEW EXECUTIVES

Many have already attended the Incoming Executive Information Sessions – even if you are have held a position before, these provide an information update and a chance to meet others from clubs near you, make new friendships and renew old ones. If you didn’t get the chance to attend and your club wants copies of either the reference manuals for each position OR the Powerpoint presentations used at the training, please let the Cabinet Secretary know and you can be sent these.

OUR BIGGEST BARBECUES

If you didn’t get the chance to participate in the fun fundraiser for the Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation (LCCRF) for whatever reason, don’t forget to make a donation to this great cause anyway.

CENTENARY PROJECTS

Those clubs who donated $1,000 to our nationwide Centennial project should have received posters to attract local interest and should now have local groups interested in applying for your $1,000.

YEAR END CHANGEOVER /INSTALLATION EVENTS

Whether it’s a dinner or a lunchtime function, celebrate your year’s achievements, invite local dignitaries AND those who’ve helped you during the year AND enjoy the event. Remember, our two-faced Lions emblem is looking back at what we’ve done and looking forward to what more we can do in the future so plan for another great year.

Please give thought when clearing out your Activities Account to donating to Lions-run health, youth and research organisations first. We do have many worthy projects. Remember our District projects – Camp Kanga and the Marine Animals (Stinger) Research Foundation. Send your donations to these and National Projects direct to Cab Treasurer PDG Tom so that he can record these and pass on the money to the right fund. May has traditionally been the month of our Multiple District Convention and this year it was hosted by the clubs of Echuca with a Riverboat theme. As the last of the national Council of Governor’s meetings for my year as DG was held at the same time , I got to experience the hospitality of a very friendly and pretty town for 9 days. We were well represented as a District, partly because our 2018 Multiple District Convention Committee were there in force to persuade fellow Lions that Townsville will be a great venue for that year. Well done everyone!

The Youth of the Year and Leo of the Year speeches, presentations from many of our partners in medical research, disability support and our foundations (ALF, LCIF, ALDAF) were well worth listening to and keep Australian Lions up to date in what is happening in our wider Lions community.

This is my June report for the Northern Lion. I am pleased with the club’s reporting for the last two months. Nearly 100% reporting for this period. It has taken nearly 12 months to accomplish this result.

I have received all but four Club PU-101 forms back from the Lions, Lioness and Leo Clubs for the next Lions year. I now have these forms so I can complete the District 201Q2 Club information for the 2016-2017 Directory. I thank all the clubs for their prompt response to sending in these forms.

I have enjoyed working with DG Kath and her Cabinet this last twelve months. I must thank all the Club Secretaries for the great effort in getting Club reports in time, especially the last few months. Thank you once again.

To DGE Brian and his Cabinet, I wish you a very successful year ahead for our centenary.

Thank you all.

Garth Gleeson 201Q2 Cabinet Secretary (Mob) 0407 044 963 [email protected]

From the Cabinet Secretary’s desk ...

It’s State of Origin time again!

(apologies to all the NSW Lions out there)

are partnered with and choose causes that interest your members.

DG’S RUN AROUND

MAY was Convention month and our officer training sessions, JUNE will see the last of my long road trips as I go to Townsville for the Cabinet Meeting and then continue to Richmond, Cloncurry, Mt Isa, Julia Creek and Hughenden (it’s all right, I do know that they’re not in that order but my visits are!). I look forward to that and will be well-armed with hay fever cures as I am allergic to all of those lovely flowering bushes out there!

THANK YOU to all of you who have hosted my visits, shown me around your projects, given me scenic tours of your town and reaffirmed my belief that Lions is the best and friendliest humanitarian organisation to belong to.

ENJOY ANOTHER MONTH OF FUN, FELLOWSHIP AND SERVICE WITH LIONS.

CLUB OFFICER TRAINING

By the time you read this edition of the Northern Lion, most of our training sessions for incoming club officers will have been completed. I hope you have found these sessions useful and feel empowered to take on your new role in your club. If you need any further assistance, or want to provide any feedback on the training, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Remember that we never stop learning and need to keep an open mind to deal with the changes in our clubs and the wider community. There are lots of useful resources on the Lions websites, and you will also expand your knowledge by inviting district officers to speak at your club and by attending club visits, Zone meetings, District and National Conventions.

ADVANCED TRAINING

For those looking for training at a higher level, the next Advanced Lions Leadership Institute for the Lions of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia & The Islands of the South Pacific Ocean will be offered in Sydney, Australia on September 17-19, 2016.

This institute teaches valuable leadership skills at the zone, region and district levels and is targeted to Lions who have completed a term as club president but have not yet attained the position of first vice

PRESIDENT’S CORNER LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

district governor. Lions who are region and zone chairpersons, as well as second vice district governors are encouraged to apply to this institute.

Anyone interested in attending this institute is encouraged to download the application from the LCI website. Completed forms must be received by July 4, 2016.

CLUB HANDOVERS

We are now entering the season of club handovers. Please take time to celebrate the achievements of your club over the past year, and make sure to congratulate your members and show appreciation for their efforts. This will go a long way towards ensuring they remain loyal members of your club.

I extend my congratulations to all club officers for the job you have done over the past year, and hope that you have left your club in a better position than it was 12 months ago. The challenge now is for the next team to keep the club moving ahead!

Good luck!

Top 5 New Member Orientation Resources

Retaining new members is even more important than recruiting them. In order for members to feel active, valued and comfortable, a New Member Orientation should be conducted within the first month of their induction. This is a critical step for new Lions and helps to get them involved in your club and in Lions Clubs International. Here are our top 5 new member orientation resources to help you.

‘Knitted Knockers’ a great idea Some time ago, Mackay Host Lions Club President Pat

Little read an interesting editorial on Mackay women who were making a difference, and her attention was caught by one particular article titled “Knitted Knockers”.

Following up on this, Pat invited Mrs Mrs Dorne Cawte to come along to a Lions meeting and explain what these "Knitted Knockers" were. They are knitted "boobs" to replace a breast that has been removed. They come in different sizes and are

made from 100% cotton. Dorne sends them anywhere they are needed, with many women just not able to afford the $500 for silicone implants—and the Knockers are far more successful than using the old man's hankie. And they are FREE! Dorne had everyone in the Club in fits of laughter.

As an added bonus, by the end of the meeting, Dorne felt Mackay Host Lions Club could offer her something in return and said she would like to join them! President Pat quickly found a membership form and Dorne will be inducted as a member on 6th June. Yet another member who will bring a depth of knowledge to the Club—membership can come in the most unusual of situations!

Pictured (above): Dorne Cawte with one of her ‘knockers’ and (below) details of this clever device.

Recently Lionsonoz member, Lion Trish Hyett assisted husband Lion Syd, a member of Ingleburn Lions Club at their Club’s project at the the NSW Harness Racing Club meeting held at Menangle Park and to cheer on charity pacer, Abettorrose.

Abettorrose regularly races for charities and community groups, who receive $2,500 for a win, and, if unsuccessful, the chosen charity still receives $250 just for a start! At this meeting she was running for

the benefit of the Ingleburn Lions Club. Because Australian Lionsonoz do not conduct any money raising projects, their members assist the “Main Stream” Lions Clubs in their projects and that was what Lion Trish was doing on the day.

This beautiful horse trotted bravely for Ingleburns Lions Club, proudly leading for most of the race, but the last couple of hundred meters proved just too much for this fearsome filly.

Dear Lions, Leos and Lioness of Australia,

Right now there is a wild fire burning uncontrollably in the vicinity of Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, that has engulfed thousands of acres, destroying nearly 2,000 homes and businesses. The entire city of Fort McMurray – population 80,000 – has been evacuated. It is the largest mass evacuation in the history of Canada. And still, the fire burns. There is currently no timeframe for when the fire will be extinguished, no estimate of how many more homes and businesses will be lost, and no time table given to those who have been displaced as to when they might return to begin reconstructing their lives.

The Lions of Canada are formulating a plan with regard to how best to respond to this natural disaster. They are working with government officials and other agencies to assess what it needed.

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has approved a US$100,000 major catastrophe grant to allow Canadian Lions to provide much needed assistance.

Your donations allow LCIF to respond when and where needed. This is the third major catastrophe in the past three weeks. We are providing assistance to our Canadian brothers and sisters even as assistance continues to flow into Japan and Ecuador in the aftermath of devastating earthquakes there.

Please send your donation to the LCIF Disaster Relief Fund. Your donation will enable much needed assistance to be given to disaster related projects throughout the world including Japan, Ecuador and Canadian Bushfires.

Send your cheque in Australian Dollars to your District Cabinet Treasurer.

Your donation to the Disaster Relief Fund will be eligible to go towards a Melvin Jones Fellowship or Progressive Melvin Jones Fellowship.

100% of every dollar donated to LCIF goes to the people in need.

Regards, Tom Becker LCIF MD201 Coordinator

LCIF helps Lions improve peoples’ lives around the world, from combating vision problems to responding to major catastrophes to providing valuable life skills to youth. Because LCIF helps Lions carry out large-scale projects through their grant programs, Lions increase their impact in their local and global communities and serve even more people in need around the world.

EGG POACHER: Crocodile Dundee style

Townsville Castle Hill Lions don’t do anything by halves. They have the ultimate Crocodile Dundee style egg poacher on hand for use whenever they have a catering project …

You call that a poacher?

Now THIS is a poacher!

Music Therapy for Dementia Patients

Whitsunday Lions are in the early stages of planning an important and exciting project in conjunction with the Proserpine Nursing Home.

A recent study shows that dementia and Alzheimer’s patients can recall memories and emotions and have enhanced mental performance after singing or listening to classic hits and show tunes from movies and musicals—a breakthrough in understanding how music affects those with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Music can evoke emotion in even the most advanced of Alzheimer’s patients. A neurologist says music can evoke emotion in even the most advanced of Alzheimer’s patients, and emotion can bring with it memory, bringing back the feeling of life when nothing else can.

By pairing music with everyday activities, patients can develop a rhythm that helps them to recall the memory of that activity, improving cognitive ability over time.

The members of Whitsunday Lions Club plan to select residents, contact families and provide headphones and MP3 players loaded with the selected music.

We look forward to hearing more on this project!

While Travelling to Moree to join up with the Lions ‘vanners wending their way to Echuca last month, Lionsonoz President Lion Ted Pickwell and Lion Hazel called in on Lions Kel and Yvie Kearns at Woolgoolga and took delivery of a vast amount of baby jackets, jumpers and beanies especially knitted by the Lionsonoz ladies for premature babies.

This is an ongoing project undertaken by the ladies, which helps to fill in the time between towns on their travels and also is a very worthwhile project as well.

This batch was presented to the Moree Hospital Obstetrics ward by Lion Hazel and the matron there was very pleased to receive them. This latest issue should keep the Moree hospital in premature baby’s clothes for many months to come.

Australian Lionsonoz does not have an Activities account, nor does it conduct fund raising projects so the knitting project allows the members to participate in voluntary work while travelling all over this great land of ours.

Anyone who would like to participate in the Australian Lionsonoz program would be very welcome and for more details they could contact Lionsonoz Lion Yvie on 0427 497 660.

Lionsonoz in action

Let's say it's 7:25pm and you're going home (alone of course) after an unusually hard day on the job. You're really tired, upset and frustrated.

Suddenly you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to drag out into your arm and up in to your jaw. You are only about five km from the hospital nearest your home, but unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far.

You have been trained in CPR, but the guy that taught the course did not tell you how to perform it on yourself.

Many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack. Without help, the person whose heart is beating improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness.

These victims however can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously.

A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest.

A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again.

Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it to regain a normal rhythm.

In this way, heart attack victims can get help or get to a hospital.

Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!

A cardiologist says If everyone who reads this sends it to 10 people, you can bet that we'll save at least one life.

you’re on your own

LIONS YOUTH EXCHANGE

Seeking host families from any State

in Australia for any youth Are you looking for a club project involving youth?

In July this year 120 young men and women will fly into Australia to be part of the Lions Australian Winter Youth Exchange Program. About a month ago the “Seeking Host Families” flyer was included in the Northern Lion. 95 young people have been placed to date so we still need to find host families for the remaining 25.

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Can you please encourage your Club members to get involved and support this wonderful program. Why not offer to host one of the young exchangees travelling to Australia in July-August with the Lions Youth Camp and Exchange Program. Contact your District Youth Exchange Chairperson for host application forms and information (contact details on last page). Keep an eye out for our next flyer.

The following is a list of youth current as at 24 May 2016

As this is my last report on my current portfolios for the year, I will just summarise some of the news for you.

Lions Medical Research Foundation is running smoothly although I would like to see a bit more support from Clubs when the Art Union comes around in future. It is a major fundraising event for the Foundation yet there were only 7 Q2 Clubs who participated. The Foundation for those who are new and those who do not know, is owned and managed by Queensland Lions and has been Researching since 1966, 50 years of making a difference to people’s lives. Check our new website.

The Foundation seed funds Researchers for three years and to continue to do this the cost is approximately $600,000 .00 per year, so your help in raising this amount will be and has been appreciated, Thank You. You will meet our new Researcher at the Ingham convention.

Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation had exciting news for us in Echuca when we heard that Lions Clubs International Foundation were to support in part only, our Research and help us to finance our $4 million project into Childhood Cancer, you will know a lot more at Ingham

Health Projects Report from Lion Aussie

convention about this partnership, this leaves the Foundation $1.3 million to raise in the next 3 years, so keep supporting by donations and Biggest BBQ.

Australian Lions Childhood Mobility received $14,000.00 from sale of used stamps, this is a project that any Club of any size can participate in.

Of the other Foundations in my portfolio I, like you, need to visit their website to get any information although there have been some interesting outcomes with Research in Spinal Cord with a treatment using Dextron, this was published in the Lion Magazine 2 issues ago.

I will be having a change of portfolios this coming year but will continue to include Lions Medical Research, Australian Lions Childhood Cancer and Spinal Cord Foundations.

I wish the Clubs, Lions, Lioness and Leos a successful year and I will be happy to help in any way I can with information on my coming portfolios.

The Ugly Baby Boy

Walter and Linda were a middle aged couple blessed with two beautiful daughters.

Although they felt incredibly lucky for having their girls, Walter and Linda always yearned for a boy.

They began trying for another baby, and it wasn’t long before Linda became pregnant. Nine months later, they welcomed a baby boy into the world.

Walter was at work when his wife was rushed to hospital, so he got there as quickly as he could.

To his horror, his son was absolutely hideous, especially when considering how beautiful his daughters were.

‘How can I possibly be the father of that ugly baby?’ he exclaimed to his wife. ‘It’s just not possible that I fathered him after we had those two beautiful girls.’

Linda blushed, which made him suspicious. ‘Have you been fooling around behind my back?’ he asked.

‘Not this time, honey.’

‘Completed’ or ‘Finished’?

Here's your English lesson for the day:

No dictionary has ever been able to satisfactorily define the difference between ‘complete’ and ‘finished’.

However, during a recent linguistic conference, held in London, England, and attended by some of the best linguists in the world, Samsundar Balgobin, a Guyanese linguist, was the presenter when he was asked to make that very distinction.

The question put to him by a colleague in the erudite audience was this:

“Some say there is no difference between ‘complete’ and ‘finished.’ Please explain the difference in a way that is easy to understand.”

Mr. Balgobin’s response:

“When you marry the right woman, you are ‘complete.’ If you marry the wrong woman, you are ‘finished.’ And, if the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are ‘completely finished.’”

His answer received a five minute standing ovation.

Notes from the Editor ... The Northern Lion is emailed to all Lions, Lioness

and Leo Clubs in District 201Q2, as well as to the Governors of all other Australian Districts.

There is no monthly deadline. Contributions for the Northern Lion are welcome at any time. But please be aware that entries received late in the month may be kept for the following issue depending on the number of pages of the bulletin.

This of course excludes urgent or date related information. These will always be included.

Thank you to everyone who has contributed over the past year. I have thoroughly enjoyed putting together the monthly bulletin and look forward to another year of good stories and a few laughs.

TIPS TO MAKE THE JOB EASIER:

To ensure good visual quality, please send any photos in medium or high resolution (higher than 200KB).

If possible, send articles in Word or Publisher format, rather than pdf. I only have the free version of Adobe Acrobat, which does not allow me to break down pdf’s.

Send articles and photos to:
