PRINCIPALS PIECE Hello everyone and what an action packed week we have ahead. Tomorrow our under 8’s travel to St Francis to participate in their under 8’s activity day, which will then be followed up in term 3 with our annual community under 8’s activity day coordinated by Ms Mellon. Our Interhouse Cross Country event will be this Thursday from 1.00pm-3.00pm at the showgrounds whilst at 3.15pm that afternoon Ms Mellon will be conducting a parent reading information session during which she will share with parents the reading approach we use at Hughenden SS and strategies parents can use with their children at home. Later that evening at 7.00pm we have our regular P&C meeting at in the Dining Room of the Royal Hotel (everyone is welcome to attend). Whilst on Friday night we have our annual Fete and Monster Raffle with the HSS Hero’s and Heroin’s Golf Day following this on Saturday. Events such as the above don’t happen without a lot of planning, coordination, preparation and personal sacrifice, fortunately we have a dedicated and enthusiastic group of volunteers in our school, on the P&C and within the community. I am immensely proud to be a part of a school community who engages so willingly whilst also being prepared to make personal sacrifices for the benefit of all. To all of the volunteers who have helped I extend to you a very big THANK YOU. For the past year, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) has worked with teachers, the schooling sectors and many other groups and individuals to redevelop senior syllabuses. Following advice from the QCAA Board, further work is underway to support the delivery of a group of 21 syllabuses in a composite class setting. We will keep you updated as this work progresses. New and updated resources provide further information for school communities about Queensland's new senior assessment and tertiary entrance systems. These include videos, factsheets and presentations. Please use this link to access more information https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/new-snr- assessment-te/resources. The Student Connect magazine will arrive soon. This publication for Year 12 students highlights key events in Semester 2 and profiles the study and career journeys of recent school graduates. In this issue, students are also encouraged to log in to their learning account to check their personal details before final results are released in December. All Year 12 students who log in at least once between 1 May and 31 August 2017 will go into a draw to win an Apple MacBook Air. NAPLAN week ran smoothly with students having an opportunity to eat a brain building breakfast every day to help them be best prepared for the tests. Please remember NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NAPLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children. An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued by the school later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of concern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers and how the school will use this knowledge to assist our teaching. GETTING TO KNOW THE STAFF Hello I am Mrs Anuj (Ms Devi). I was born in Fiji. Fiji is a tropical Island surrounded by beautiful beaches. It is a nice place for holiday. After graduating from University, I worked in the accounting firm in Fiji. Later I changed my profession to a school teacher since I love working with kids. I migrated to Australia in 1999. I did further studies in Professional Accounting at QUT, Brisbane and

Mathematics at Griffith University. I have done teaching contracts at various schools in North Brisbane, both State and Catholic schools. I came to Hughenden State School in 2011 and taught Maths A, Junior Maths, Science and ICT for two years. I have been on leave for the last four years. I am doing relief teaching at Hughenden State School this year.

P & C NEWS HELP NEEDED! Our HSS Golf Day is this Saturday, May 21 commencing at 2:30pm and we are seeking help with the catering. If you can help out on the night with our BBQ tea by cooking or serving or if you could do a dish for us that would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the school on 4741 2111.

CURRICULUM CORNER How does Hughenden State School plan what curriculum is to be implemented you ask? Well firstly we must understand the importance of curriculum in our classroom!

Robert Marzano has identified curriculum as one of the three general characteristics of effective teaching. As professionals we must understand that to improve student achievement an effective classroom curriculum needs to be carefully designed and implemented. As mentioned in last week’s corner, curriculum decisions and judgements must be made in accordance with the Australian Curriculum in line with the recommendations from the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). At this point we then have to consider the unique situation that we have at our school with regards to multi-year levels.

“So where to” You may ask? At the end of last year our teachers’ reflected on what had been taught across every year for every subject and this was recorded. We then looked forward to this year and identified the order in which the achievement standards would be taught and assessed. Then we identified which year level unit would be used as the focus for every term and how we would differentiate it for the other year levels. This is possible as the junctures work across two years of learning.

For example, in year 7/8 History the unit theme focus comes from the Year 8 content descriptors (Vikings, The Polynesian Expansion and Black Death), however, when assessing the year 7 students, this is done using the Year 7 achievement standards. In the next year, the unit theme focus will be taken from the Year 7 content descriptors.

All of this is carefully mapped using the Whole School Curriculum Framework tool to ensure that all students are exposed to all of the required learning and are assessed using the appropriate achievement standard. From this point teachers’ then have the opportunity to make professional decisions about the type of assessment task and the required learning of the unit to ensure that it reflects the local context of Hughenden, while still meeting the requirements of the Australian curriculum.

This is evident in Design and Technology with Mr West’s students looking at the design of an eco-friendly planter and Ms Crase’s students investigating solutions to growing vegetables in our unique climate to our English classes where students are exposed to advertisements that have been specifically designed for a Queensland audience using certain persuasive techniques. The complete process brings clarity to our planning and rigour to our teaching which ensures that the curriculum being designed and implement is effective for our individual classroom setting.
