Page 3 December 2012 - ALPHA KAPPA MU

The Kappa Eta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society was offered the opportunity to pose for the “Unionite” magazine that is distributed to alumni, faculty, and staff. President, Dr. Claude G. Perkins, strongly supports student academic organizations. He is very proud when students achieve at high levels and share the news with readers of the “Unionite”.

For the academic year 2012-2013, the chapter officers include: President, Emily Piercy who is a social work major with a GPA of 3.6; Vice President, Lillian Ike who is a biology major with a 3.3 GPA; and Secretary, Lela Hatcher who is an English major with a 3.5 GPA. One activity of the Kappa Eta Chapter was to conduct a voter registration drive in September. The members realized the importance of one’s right to vote so they staged a voter registration drive for a day. The drive was conducted from 1 p.m. through 8 p.m. Members assisted students with registering to vote and allowed them to check their voting status online. The Muans also apprised them of the major issues relating to the election as well as President Barack Obama’s Plan versus Mitt Romney’s Plan. The voter registration drive was a success. Thirty persons were registered during the event. Upcoming events include an interest “Meet and Greet” for potential Alpha Kappa Mu members, a formal induction of new members, and programs related to the holidays.

The following persons were elected to serve as officers of the Alpha Beta Tau Chapter at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff: Dexter S. Lyles, President; Vence L. Johnson, First Vice President; Nalita L. Holt, Second Vice President; Erin Joshua, Secretary; Cristal G. Amaro, Assistant Secretary/Reporter; Viana Stanley, Treasurer; and Anthony Graham, Parliamentarian.

Twenty-seven new members were inducted into the chapter. The scholars of the chapter plan to promote and expand Alpha Kappa Mu to its fullest potential and serve the community at a higher level.

On September 20, 2012, the Kappa Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu National Honor Society held the Fall 2012 Interest Meeting for prospective members. We had a great turn out of interested students. The intake process began right after the interest meeting. Prospective members had to gather letters of recommendation, letter of interest, create a scroll, and get as many member signatures as possible.

On Thursday, October 4, a total of seventeen (17) students were inducted into the family of scholars.

Those members are:

Remember Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society In Your WillYour attorney will be able to explain the tax advantage to you of making bequests to Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. In terms of actual cost to your estate, the deductibility of such bequests for Federal estate tax purposes means that the actual dollar outlay may be far less than the face amount of the bequest. This is particularly true if you are a person of considerable means. Your attorney can acquaint you, in an approximate way, with the actual saving you may envision for your estate by means of such bequests. You need not make the bequests in outright form, but you may plan them so that they will take effect only upon the death of other members of your family for whom you will have made prior provisions in your will. In this way, you may accomplish the two-fold result of providing security for your closest loved ones while still seeing to it that, upon their deaths when the funds are no longer needed for their support, these funds will be put to constructive use.

Your bequests can take the form of furthering the general purpose of Alpha Kappa Mu or, if you so wish can be earmarked for some particular phase of Alpha Kappa Mu activities that specifically interests you. Although Alpha Kappa Mu will welcome and be grateful for such bequest for a specific purpose, Alpha Kappa Mu prefers that bequests not be restricted, so that after your death the money can be used for whatever programs are then most in need of funds.

If you are thinking of making a bequest to the Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, you should explore this matter fully with your attorney. He will be able to assist you in effectuating a plan which will best achieve our particular testamentary objectives. For the guidance of attorneys drafting wills which make bequests to Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society, there are shown below a few samples

of the difference forms such bequest may take. Of course, these forms must be adapted by the attorney who makes use of them to the requirements of the particular instrument he is drafting. He must be aware of the interrelationships between such bequest and the other provisions of your will.

Unrestricted Bequest

I give and bequeath the sum of Dollars (S______) to Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society having its principal office at 324 Enterprise Drive, Albany, GA 31705, for its general purposes.

Restricted Request

I give and bequest the sum of Dollars ($___________) to Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society having its principal office at 324 Enterprise Drive, Albany, GA 31705, for the purpose of (furthering Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society programs).

Bequest after Termination of Trust

Upon the death of my wife/husband,____________I give devise and bequeath the principal of the trust for her/his benefit, as it shall then be constituted, to Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society having its principal office at 324 Enterprise Drive, Albany, GA, for its general purposes.

FAMU Chapter Inducts Thirteen New Members

The Kappa Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society at Florida A & M University (FAMU) welcomed thirteen members (1 graduate and 12 undergraduates) into fellowship during its fall 2011 induction ceremony.

The program was presided over by Mr. Cortney Gould, chapter President, who also provided the greetings. Chapter Vice-President, Mr. Timothy Harmon, delivered the invocation, and Historian, Ms. Angel Forde, gave the history and occasion. Dr. Veronica Yon, Associate Professor of English and chapter advisor, introduced the speaker, Dr. Ray Mobley, Professor and Associate Administrator for the FAMU Cooperative Extension Center in the College of Engineering Sciences, Technology, and Agriculture (CESTA).

An alumnus of the Kappa Iota Chapter, Dr. Mobley referred to the distinction of being the keynote speaker as a “full circle” moment for him and recognized the giants upon whose shoulders he has stood through the years. Calling himself a “behind the scenes” person, Mobley told the inductees, “We need change, not by what you say but by what you do!” He also reminded the honorees of the biblical truth: “To whom much is given much is required.” Dr. Mobley continued by listing qualities, such as self-respect, loyalty, faith in God, honesty, and confidence that he considered crucial to the next phase of the inductees’ successful journeys. Following his inspirational address, Dr. Yon, the chapter advisor, and President Gould presented Dr. Mobley with a certificate of appreciation.

Congratulations to the newest inductees of the Kappa Iota Chapter. They are as follows: Tonelia Abigail Mowatt, junior, biology; Christopher N. Smith, senior, criminal justice and psychology; Carla Elaine McBride, graduate, political science; Alfonso McAfee, senior, history; William Alexander Hernandez, junior, nursing; Keith Derek Simmons, senior, history; Ji’Lisa Ty’Naisha Mathis, senior, political science; Steven Jesse Philistin, senior, finance; Conial C.
