Dear MTSU Fraternity and Sorority Life Community,

Thank you for your support and dedication throughout the 2017-18 academic year. The MTSU Fraternity and Sorority community continues to achieve great things while adding immense value to the campus of Middle Tennessee State University.

The purpose of this report is to provide you with a comprehensive glance of the achievements of the past year and statistics about the overall health of the MTSUFSL community. Below are some of our community highlights:

• Over 64 nonprofit organizations benefited from 16,885 hands-on service hours and $82,525.66 raised by our FSL students.

• The All FSL GPA of 3.00 was above the All Student GPA!

• The 2017 Homecoming Court was filled with 7 fraternity and sorority members.

This year, we unveiled the next Strategic Plan for Fraternity and Sorority Life at MTSU. This plan will guide us into the next five years where it is our hope that we continue to influence our campus in a positive manner and grow our membership to benefit more students. The Strategic Plan can be found at www.mtsu.edu/fsl.

We could not do this without each of you! Thank you to the students, faculty, staff, advisors, alumni, HQ staff members, and many more who provide countless hours of support to the FSL community.

True Blue,

Leslie MerrittDirector of Fraternity and Sorority LifeMiddle Tennessee State University

Interfraternity Council

MissionThe Interfraternity Council (IFC) serves as the governing body for all 11 fraternities at Middle Tennessee State University. These organizations comprise a group of extremely involved men within the university community that stand out as leaders and as key position holders in many campus organizations.

IFC is committed to building men of character, developing leaders, promoting scholarship, and enriching lives through community involvement. Those who become involved with a fraternity are much more likely to graduate and achieve academic success at MTSU.

IFC Events

MOVEMBER // During the month of November many men took the pledge to grow out their mustache to bring awareness about men’s health issues. MTSU’s IFC took the pledge to raise funds for the many men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide. The IFC raised close to $1,000 in November of 2017 for Movember.

WALK A MILE IN HER SHOES // Men sported high heels at the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event that was held to spread awareness of rape, sexual assault and gender violence. Interfraternity Council President Thomas Denney was the IFC liaison of the event and was out helping facilitate everyone and lead the fraternity men through the mile-long walk in heels. “The importance of today is to show that not only the fraternity community but the whole MTSU community does not support sexual assault and rape,” Denney said. He described the event as being a way that men can take themselves out of their normal situation, can remove themselves from the normal masculine stereotype and to literally walk in women’s shoes to show support and provide awareness to the community on the problems we face with sexual assault and rape. IFC Events

RECRUITMENT // The Interfraternity Council has an open structure recruitment process. This means organizations have the opportunity to recruit year-round and extend bids at any time. This system allows chapters and potential members the opportunity to develop stronger relationships before a bid is given or received. MTSU prides itself on having 11 different and unique IFC fraternities.

National Pan-Hellenic Council

MissionNational Pan-Hellenic Council is the international umbrella organization comprised of the historically African-American Greek letter organizations. This council is commonly referred to as the “Divine Nine.” The National Pan-Hellenic Council at MTSU consists of seven of these organizations. The NPHC works to further promote unity and interaction between chapters through forums, meetings and events.

Bringing in over 1,000 people each year, it is one of the university’s most popular events during Homecoming Week. Kappa Alpha Psi and Delta Sigma Theta won their respective categories with Kappa Alpha Psi being named the overall winner.

NPHC WEEK // On February 18-23, the MTSU NPHC hosted NPHC Week: Family Matters in conjunction with Black History Month. The week consisted of 7 days of events hosted by different organizations within the NPHC.

NPHC Presentations

The New Member Presentation is an important milestone of membership within NPHC. These experiences serve as a celebration of an individual becoming a member of the NPHC community but also celebrate the exceptional history and traditions of each organization. During this academic year Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta welcomed new members.

EASTER EGG HUNT // One of MTSU’s fun family events, the annual Easter Egg Hunt, was held again this year on the lawn of the President’s Home. Children ages 12 and under joined the fun where they searched the grounds of one of MTSU’s oldest buildings for colorful candy-filled eggs. The event also featured games and the Easter Bunny!

TRICK OR TREAT ON GREEK ROW // Children 12 and under from the community joined our FSL community for the Annual Trick or Treat on Greek Row hosted by College Panhellenic. Children enjoyed free games, activities and candy with our members! Each year, this is a favorite event of our members and the community!

RECRUITMENT // Formal Recruitment is the best way to meet all six National Panhellenic Conference sororities at MTSU. As a new or returning student at MTSU, formal recruitment allows one to get connected on campus and form a network of close friends within just a few days. Recruitment is a weekend long series of events, coordinated by the Panhellenic Council, where the chapters get to know potential members, and they get to know the women of each chapter. This year, sororities made appearances at various Connection Point events to encourage students to sign up for recruitment. The weekend features a philanthropy round, sisterhood round and preference. Recruitment is held in the chapter houses on Greek Row. In 2017, we welcomed 221 new members on Bid Day.
