The Hittite Microwave SPNT switch productline includes non-reflective and reflectiveswitches with on-board-decoders. TheHMC165S14 SP4T, HMC182S14 SP4T,HMC172QS24 SP6T & HMC183QS24SP8T are in industry standard plastic SOICand QSOP packages.

The on-board-decoder technologydeveloped by Hittite Microwave providesthe user with the advantage of a simplifiedcontrol interface. Decoder topologies foreach switch style are as follows: 2:4decoder = SP4T, 3:6 decoder = SP6T, and3:8 = SP8T. This directly simplifies boardlayout by reducing the number of driverlines required to control the switch andreducing RF crosstalk. There is a Vee biasrequirement of -5.0Vdc and the control linesaccept negative logic voltages. The switching elements of the circuit aredepletion mode MESFETs (FETs). In standardoperation the drain & source of each FET isheld at DC ground with the gate potential ofthe FET held at 0 volts resulting in the low lossor on state. When the gate potential is heldat -5 volts the high impedance or off stateresults.

voltage bias & control signals readily available. The floating ground switch driver methoddescribed below can be used to enablepositive bias & control operation of the GaAs

multi-throw switch. By the use of blockingcapacitors, pull-up resistors, and carefulattention to layout details of the PCB, thefloating ground switch driver approach can beused with good results and a minimum ofadditional circuitry.

There must be a potential difference of > 3.5Vdc to < -7Vdc between the gate anddrain-source channel to establish the certainpinch-off of the FET channel, thereforeachieving the off state in the FET. This can be

accomplished by holding the source and drainat +5 V and toggling the gate between 0 and+5 V to change the state of the FET. All DCbias points and control signals are therefore

raised +5V from their normal 0 or 5Vpotentials.

An example of this floating ground techniqueusing microstrip transmission lines is shownin Figure 1 for the HMC182S14 SP4T non-reflective switch. The switch shunt FETsources are pulled to +5 volts through the270 nH inductor (L1) applying bias to thefloating ground plane. The switch FET drainsare held at +5 volts potential via the 10Kohm resistor (R1) and capacitor (C9)arrangement shown at the RF Commonnode. RF/DC ground connections musthave many via holes to ensure a lowimpedance path to ground. C1-C10 dcblock, decoupling & bypass applicationsshould be 100 pF to 0.01 uF. The bypasscapacitors C1-C4 should be placed asclose to the floating ground plane aspossible to minimize ground inductance andmaximize isolation.

The bias pin, Vee, of the HMC182S14 mustnow be held to 0 Vdc (DC ground) versus itsnormal non-floating bias of 5Vdc. Directconnection to the HMC182S14 switch A & Bcontrol lines by any positive logic driver deviceis now possible.

See page 8-30 of the Hittite MicrowaveCorporation catalog or the Application Notesection of the web site or CD ROM for a moredetailed version of this application note. Lookfor positive bias versions of the HMC SPNTswitch product line coming in the Fall of 99!

SMT packages, manufacturers of mm wave radios caneliminate chip-to-substrate wirebond parasitics ordiscrete-to-discrete PCB losses & matching circuits. Theresult will be a smaller circuit area, reduced componentcount & vendor base, improved reliability, performanceand cost.

Our new mm wave BGA products are based upon theexisting HMC258, HMC264 and HMC265 mixer/converter bare die. Utilizing MESFET and PHEMTprocesses the die and BGA packaged versions offer sub-harmonic (x2) local oscillator inputs (7 to 16 GHz) with LOdrives of 4 to 0 dBm.

Introduced inside this issue of OFF-THE-SHELF, these mmwave SMT products are available in sample to productionquantities from stock! Detailed data sheets can be foundon our June 99 updated web site, www.hittite.com. Lookfor 20 - 40 GHz LNAs & medium PAs offered in mm waveBGA SMT packages in Autumn 99!
