JOIN THE SPRECKELS ORGAN SOCIETY

HELP KEEP THE MUSIC FLOWING!

nyone who has been touched by music is invited to join the Spreckels Organ Society.

ou understand the power of music to transform lives and uplift the spirit. That is the purpose of the Society—to sustain the circle of giving that was begun by John and Adolph Spreckels with their gift of music in the form of the magnificent Austin Organ Opus #453.

For 100 years, civic and private support have combined to assure that new generations continue to be inspired by the music of "The King of Instruments." Will you join us?

We ask that you make a membership donation and enjoy the benefits of the quarterly StopTab newsletter, invitations to special events, and ad-vance notice of the Society's programs and events.

Your membership helps to underwrite the outreach to students through the “Fifth Grade in the Park” program and the annual scholarship com-petition for young organists.

City funding only goes so far, and we rely on members and donors to finance a significant amount of operations. Your support is vital!

The Society offers a frame of understanding and appreciation around each of the more than 62 concerts held here every year.

Members who also choose to volunteer perform the special functions of docent work and greeting you with programs when arriving at an organ concert.

In fact, the Society is operated almost entirely by volunteers.

Together, we make it happen -- so join the Spreckels Organ Society and improve on the legacy we celebrate tonight.

See one of the Membership Committee members or ask for a member-ship envelope at the Gift Shop or greeting table.

We also have a PayPal option online.

your membership brings a 10% discount at the Gift Shop.

On behalf of the Spreckels Organ Society, I would like to welcome you to our Centennial International Summer Organ Festival, marking the 100th birth-day celebration of the great Spreckels Organ and the 28th summer organ festival. This year we are featuring a very special group of organists from near and far, carefully selected by our Artistic Di-rector and Civic Organist, Dr. Carol Williams, and

the dedicated volunteers of our Program Committee. This program book is your guide to the summer concerts, complete with the individu-al program details and artists’ biographies. Don’t lose it. You’ll want to bring it with you for every concert.

The Centennial International Summer Organ Festival is presented to the public without admission charge, consistent with the intent of donors John D. and Adolph B. Spreckels. The Spreckels Organ Society is de-lighted to make this possible. But the festival is obviously not cost free. The many generous members of our organization contribute their annu-al dues, their special donations, their time volunteering, and their great enthusiasm for this San Diego treasure at the heart of Balboa Park. If you have not yet joined the Spreckels Organ Society, please consider doing so while you attend one of the concerts this summer. The volun-teers at the membership desk look forward to meeting you.

We are pleased to showcase this summer some of the finest organists performing today. Our very generous patrons make this possible, and we gratefully thank them for this support. Please note their names in this program. You, too, can be such a patron for next year’s festival. Just drop us a note or email and we’ll follow up. Or, talk to me, or one of the other trustees, at one of the concerts this summer.

I would like personally to thank the wonderful group of trustees of the Spreckels Organ Society, and the many outstanding volunteers who have worked tirelessly to fulfill our mission this year -- “to preserve, promote and program the great Spreckels Organ.” Without their gener-osity of time, talent and spirit, this magnificent instrument would have long since ceased producing its magic. Won't you join me in thanking them for what they do?

I hope you and your friends and family enjoy every one of the eleven concerts this centennial summer. We are delighted you are here.

Together, we make a difference.

George Hardy

Drive to 5000 Pipes

Since 2012, the Society has worked with the curators to expand the voices of the organ so that it can grow to more than 5,000 pipes and thus become, once again, the World’s Largest Outdoor Pipe Organ.

In December 2012 the Drive to 5000 Pipes was launched with a first stage goal of the Centennial Tuba. This rank was dedicated at the Decem-ber 31, 2014 Centennial Concert. Four more stages have followed, with hun-dreds of individuals and families sponsoring one or more pipes.

In 2015, the Fifth and final stage has begun, with public sponsorship of Crommorne rank pipes matched by an anonymous donor of pipes on the Vox Humana rank. This summer could see the completion of the Drive to 5000 funding!

OBERT PLIMPTON served for more than 16 years as San Diego Civic Organist, beginning in 1984, and helped to found the Spreckels Organ Society. In 2001 San Diego City Council named him Civic Organist Emeritus in recognition of his contribution to the artistic life of the community. From 2004 to 2015 he was Organist of the First United Methodist Church of San Diego.

ARED JACOBSEN was the fifth in the unbroken chain of Civic Organists of the City of San Diego, play-ing weekly concerts on the Spreckels Organ from 1978 through 1985. (Dr. Carol Williams, our incumbent, is the seventh.) Currently he serves as Director of Music for First Lutheran Church in downtown San Diego and is a member of the performing arts faculty of the Bish-op's School in La Jolla. During the summers he is Organist and Coordi-nator of Worship and Sacred Music for the historic Chautauqua Institu-tion in New York State, where he presides over the 107-year-old Mas-sey Memorial Organ of four manuals and ninety-three ranks, located in the six-thousand-seat, open-air wooden Amphitheater which is the cen-terpiece of Chautauqua's programming.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTE...

Dear Friends –

Celebrating the Centennial of the Spreckels Or-gan in its magical setting, we are together help-ing create new fans, lovers, and supporters of organ music even as we herald great achieve-ments that have gone before. Nowhere else is it so easy for someone to hear great music for the first time, no matter their age or station in life. It has been my great pleasure to have played a role in making possible the sounds and sights you’ll enjoy this sea-son. Please know that future generations depend on your support to keep this marvelous music flowing.

Vivian Evenson

DEAR MUSIC LOVERS, Thank you for joining us at this very special organ venue. This year, the 100th anniversary of the great Spreckels Organ, will be a festival you’ll always remember. Amazing artists will grace this stage and delight you with their music.

I have had the privilege of working with this fine organ and I always enjoy sitting back and listening to other organists under the stars.

Say hello if you see me. Sincerely,

DR. CAROL www.melcot.com

HOMAS MELLAN was born in Lyon, France, and grew up in San Diego from the age of five. He has studied composition, music theory and harmony since the age of twelve, and has written works for symphony orchestra, guitar orchestra, string quartet, and solo instruments. AUL JACOBS has been described by The Chicago Tribune as "one of the most supremely gifted organists of his generation." This Grammy award-winning organist unites technical skills of the first order with probing emotional artistry. Paul made musical history at the age of 23 when he played J.S. Bach's complete organ works in an 18-hour mara-thon performance on the 250th anniver-sary of the composer's death. At 15 he was appointed head organist of a parish of 3,500 in his hometown, Washington, Pennsylvania. He studied at the Curtis Institute of Music and at Yale Universi-ty with Thomas Murray. Paul joined the faculty of The Juilliard School in 2003, and was named chairman of the organ department in 2004, one of the youngest faculty appointees in the school's history. He received Juil-liard's prestigious William Schuman Scholar's Chair in 2007. Follow him online at www.pauljacobsorgan.com
