President’s Message 8th March.
DG Anne Egan and Jeff proved that a visit from them can be fun as well as educational. Today two club
members confirmed my feeling that the energy at last night’s meeting was positive and vibrant. Anne
spoke from the heart about Rotary and her year as District Governor. In spite of some unexpected health
challenges and business demands, Anne and Jeff have made room for more and show no signs of
burnout. Their dedication is inspiring. It was a pleasure to present Jeff a cheque on behalf of the club for
$250 towards Aboriginal Health Scholarships, the cause he is championing this year.
DGE Michael Irving and Roz are off to a good start for their rapidly approaching year in the role. PETs
and the District Assembly last weekend were well organized and informative. Michael will be addressing
the club in the near future about his goals and plans for 2016/17.
The Race Day is booked for June 4th in the Winners Circle and lunches for 8 are planned for Sunday
April 10th. Both will be social days rather than fundraisers. If you are willing to host a lunch please let
Marion or myself know.

ROTARY GRACE & FOUR WAY TEST
.
ROTARY GRACE
Oh Lord and giver of all good
We thank Thee for our daily food
May Rotary friends and Rotary ways
Help us to serve thee all our days
FOUR WAY TEST
1. Is it the truth?
2. Is it fair to all concerned?
3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
15 March 2016 3
Scribes Report 8 March.
Opening
Chair, Graham J., opened the meeting at 6:15pm with the recital of the 4-Way Test and Loyal Toast. To
the strains of “Hail to the Chief”, D.G. Anne Egan and Jeff and D.G.E. Michael Irving and Ros entered
the meeting to applause.
Rotary Minute
Michael I. delivered his Rotary Minute concerning the polio eradication program. Salient points included:
No government could have organized the worldwide effort.
The W.H.O. didn’t believe it could be done.
Rotary brought a range of skills to the project (e.g. organizational, negotiation)
Examples
o A ceasefire was negotiated during the civil war in Sri Lanka so vaccines could be provided
to children
o In one day alone 172 million children received the oral vaccine in India.
President’s Welcome and Announcements
President Lea welcomed D.G. Anne and husband, Jeff, on this official D.G. visit.
Also visiting Rotarians Ken and Tina Cowan (Cairns), Joachim Ulrich (Hamburg, Germany), Gillian
Rumpf and Regina Tucker (Griffith satellite Club) and a number of member’s partners.

Congratulations to Michael and Ros on a successful assembly.

Ken Cowan: Pointed out a few tie-ups of Southport and Cairns Clubs. Michael I. added that a number of
Southport members travelled to a district conference in Cairns shortly after our club was chartered.
Sergeant – David R.
David R. conducted a highly extractive session, following the usual $2 collection for Polio Plus.
A few examples of fines imposed were:
Any Reds fans.
Anyone who did not stay up for Australia vs South Africa T20 match.
Andrew for not knowing the difference between chicken and fish (there is one?).
Recent overseas travelers.
No “purple pinkie” for Polio Plus.
Heads and Tails President Lea.
Raffle Yvonne Perry
District Governor’s Address – D.G. Anne Egan (Introduced by Chair, Graham J., who emphasized the sterling job Anne has been doing as D.G.).
Anne congratulated Lea on the manner in which she has carried out her role as Club President. She
thanked the club members (special mention of the Jones) for their welcome and ongoing support.
Anne did not deliver the usual D.G.’s address on official visits because of the lateness in the Rotary Year.
Instead Anne spoke eloquently and most sincerely about her Rotary journey, from a knock on the door
invitation to join, to her designation as D.G.
Some significant points:
All members contribute to the fabric of a club, each bringing their own “something”.
Service is its own reward – “giving liberates the soul of the giver”.
Rotary is not perfect, it is built on human frailty, but it’s structures give a framework for providing
service.
Our youth programs are vital.
15 March 2016 4
We must continually look at renewal at all levels of the organization.
Anne could definitely not have done what she has this year without the love and support of the
district clubs.
Announced that Southport is to receive a Presidential Citation relating to the creation of the
satellite club at Griffiths.
Jeff Egan, who is President of Mt. Warning Club, spoke about his project, which involves providing
scholarships to indigenous students through the Rotary Health Initiative. Lea presented Jeff with a
cheque for $2,500 to provide one such scholarship.
D.G. Anne then presented a Rotary themed laptop bag to Lea and a birthday present to Marion.
Vote of Thanks
In moving the vote of thanks, Tracy N. underlined Anne’s approach to service with the slogan “service
before self satisfaction”.
Close of Meeting
In closing the meeting at 7:55pm, Lea thanked D.G. Anne and stated how much she enjoyed Anne’s
address.
She thanked all for their attendance.
