Silvia Cattelan, Matteo Griggio. Biology Letters, 8 August 2018. [No free online source.] ABSTRACT: Anti-predator benefits associated with living in groups are multiple and taxonomically widespread. In fish shoals, individuals can exploit the confusion effect, whereby predators struggle to target a single individual among several individuals. Theory predicts that the confusion effect could be aided by homogeneity in appearance; thus, individuals should group by phenotypic characteristics, contributing to generating high within-shoal phenotypic homogeneity. While assortments by body size have been extensively documented, almost nothing is known about whether within-shoal homogeneity in body pigmentation affects shoaling preference. To investigate this issue, we used the Mediterranean killifish, Aphanius fasciatus, a shoaling species characterized by conspicuous vertical bars on body sides. Individual females were given a choice between two novel shoals characterized by either a high or low degree of homogeneity in the number of bars. As predicted, individual females preferentially associated with the shoal showing the higher phenotypic homogeneity. Our data demonstrated that fish might associate with the shoal that maximizes phenotypic homogeneity in body pigmentation, irrespective of their own phenotype. No killifish photos in this paper. Happy September

Its that time of the year to bring your killifish in from the outdoor tubs,

preparing your fish for the fall show season, and time to vote for the next year Board of Trustees. The online

voting is open and the mail in ballot is included in this month's BNL. If you are voting on-line you must

complete it by September 30 and if you are mailing your ballot it must be post marked by September 30.

Its my pleasure to announce that Columbus Killifish Group will be hosting the

2019 AKA Convention, Memorial Day weekend. Rumor has it besides an outstanding Speaker list, CKG is planning on hosting a collecting trip and look for convention details in the future months.

The show season is upon us, Keystone Clash is being held September 14 thru 16 in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, Columbus Killifish Group Round

Table and Auction on October 14 at AMF Sawmill Lanes in Columbus, Ohio, and Wisconsin Area Killifish Organization Annual Show being held October 28 and 29.

While you are at a fall show or meeting please take the time to talk to a BOT

member and give your opinion on the Electronic JAKA versus a printed JAKA or combination Electronic/Printed JAKA or electronic Killie Notes or any other input you would like to provide. The BOT member has obligation to

bring your feedback to BOT for discussion.

We are still looking for editors for JAKA and if you are interested in serving as editor please contact me or another BOT member for details.

Hope to see you at a killie event this fall.

From The Wisconsin Area Killifish Organization:

It is with a sad heart that we need to share with you news of the passing of a good friend, Marty Sendera. He lost his, over 5 year, battle with a lung disease, while always being stoic. Marty could be counted on as being generous with his knowledge, patience and kindness. He was instrumental in the Wisconsin Area Killifish Organization’s multi revisions of KilliTrax to run our annual Show and Auction. The program was originally created by Jan Kray back around 2005 and she generously shared it with the Killifish clubs. Marty managed to battle through learning ACCESS, the tweaking and oops to customize it to our needs. We thank him for giving so much of himself to our club. Marty Sendera; a gentle soul that will be missed.

German Lothar Seegers passed away on August 6 (born 1947), he described 21 killifish names, including 2 generic names, Diapteron and Paranothobranchius, and studied notably Nothobranchius, lampeyes and Peru fauna {before cichlid and catfish refocus}. A teacher in biology, he was a remarkable fish morphologist, his work culminating in his thesis "The fishes of the Lake Rukwa drainage" in 1996. He was a fine breeding aquarist and photographer, too (having authored the picturial Aqualog series of books) and an expert collector and biologist in East Africa.

His death was only lately noticed by neighbors. Two killifish species were dedicated to him : Aphyosemion (Diapteron) seegersi Huber, 1978 Nothobranchius seegersi Valdesalici & Kardashev, 2011

A.K.A. BOT 2019-2021 Nominee Bios

Special note: The bylaws of the AKA require that no more than 3 trustees may represent the same Region. One of the current trustees already represents Region 3, so no more than 2 of the 4 Region 3 candidates on this ballot can assume office. Please take this into account when casting your vote.

Keith Cook, MI. Region 3:

I have kept aquariums for 39 years, and though I have kept killifish intermittently during that time, I have kept killifish almost exclusively for the past 14 years. I am currently a high school chemistry teacher, but I have a passion for field biology and am fascinated by that which lives in the water.

Though my fishroom is modest by most standards, having fewer than 60 tanks, I breed a variety of killies including Epiplatys, Aphyosemion, Fundulopanchax, Austrolebias, Scriptaphyosemion, and Nothobranchius. I distribute killies to other AKA members though box sales at shows and twice a year through the Fish and Egg Listing. I make an effort to breed and distribute fish because I feel that breeding and distributing fish is one of the most important activities in which any AKA member can participate. As most of us are aware, importation has become more difficult. This is due in part to natural habitats becoming degraded in the name of progress and because of increasingly stringent and expensive importation rules. It has become ever more important that we maintain, breed, and distribute the fishes we already have in our possession. I also believe that breeding fish is important in keeping new members involved in the hobby. New members don’t stay around long if they can’t find fish readily available. Fish, both beginner and difficult species, must be produced in sufficient numbers so we can keep new members supplied with positive first experiences and experienced members supplied with new challenges. The Beginner’s Committee has recently been making fish available for new members for the cost of shipping. In my opinion this has been one of the best and most important recent changes I’ve seen in the AKA.

The AKA is on the cusp of some significant change. As has been presented to the membership, we are experiencing some financial challenges. I personally support the continued publication of a paper version of the JAKA. I know that this is more expensive to produce than an all-electronic version, but I feel that the quality of the publication is worth it. I also feel that a dues increase after many years of static dues is appropriate.

I would like to see the AKA become an organization with more participation than it has currently. This could be through exchanging fish across the country via box exchanges, entering fish in shows, making a variety of fish available through listings, auctions, and donations, and through sharing our collective knowledge via killie presentations and writing articles for JAKA. I would like to challenge anyone who has been critical of the organization to help make the organization better by contributing an article, by putting a fish and egg listing in the BNL, or by filling an empty position at the national level. To steal a phrase, “Be the change you want to see.”

I don’t have the most fish or the biggest fish room. I don’t have the most experience or knowledge of killies. I do, however, feel that I represent those enthusiasts who just want to be able to enjoy keeping killies and help others do likewise.

Mark Delraso OH. Region 3:

Like a lot of hobbyists, I started keeping fish at a young age. Livebearers and community fishes were the first stages of my hobby that evolved into killifish in the early eighties. Being a member of The Greater Cincinnati Killifish Association, The American Killifish Association, and currently The Columbus Killifish Group, I have noticed that membership roles have decreased or have remained relatively the same for a number of years. The question arises is for what reasons? The killifish hobby is very special among all of the others. This of course, is a very biased statement in which we all agree. Over the years, the organization has progressed at a pace that maybe is slightly behind the power curve. Are we completely up to date in the way we do business? We have a situation that allows a lot of potential killifish hobbyists to obtain benefits of the killifish hobby without being a member of a killifish organization. Membership in the AKA should be a

Page 7: of the American Killifish Association - AKAaka.org/!area_Member/Content/eBNL/editions/2018/2018-09... · 2018. 9. 5. · culminating in his thesis "The fishes of the Lake Rukwa drainage"

7

sought after benefit for anyone interested in any aspect of the killifish hobby. One of the primary reasons that I would like your vote to serve on the board is to investigate ways to enhance the membership experience.

Bill Logue MA. Region 4:

My name is Bill Logue. I have been a member of the AKA since 1979. I have served as Publication Sales Chairman and as BOT member. My main areas of interest in the Killie hobby have been Epiplatys and cool water Aphyosemions. I have been a regular attendee at the national convention for quite some time now and if you’ve met me there, you know that I am not afraid of work and fun. If again elected to the BOT, I will put forth my best effort to keep the AKA running as smoothly as possible.

When discussing the AKA with other members, whether about triumphs or failures, I always bear in mind that we are a group run by volunteers doing the best they can while still having a life outside the hobby. I try hard to not shoot my mouth off and complain about the organization without being willing to step up and do the work. Suggestions are always helpful, complaints without suggestions on how to improve not so much. I will always listen to the membership and if a good idea comes out of those discussions that can improve or streamline the AKA I will bring them forward to the board and lobby for their implementation.

None of us will ever get rich monetarily through our service to the organization but we can and I have been enriched by the friends and connections I have made through the years courtesy of the AKA. I wish I had the next great idea that would help us increase our membership or at least bring in new and younger blood but I don’t. I will however strive to ensure that our AKA legacy continues by ensuring that the combined knowledge that we all share is made available through our publications and internet presence. Hopefully this knowledge will spark some interest in the AKA and the little fishes that we all love.

I am married with two adult children. I am a retired police officer and served 4 years for Uncle Sam in my younger days. I appreciate the consideration of your vote.

Dick Martino IN. Region 3:

My name is Dick Martino, and I am running for the Board of Trustees. Many of you know me, or have had dealings with me-I’m the guy with the beard selling AKA Publications at Conventions and most of the shows in the Midwest.

I’ve been keeping fish for over 60 years, got my first exposure to killies back in 1958 and my first exposure to the AKA around the same time. After a brief 8 year stint with the Air Force I joined the AKA. I then took a while off from fish and rejoined the AKA in 1987- I have been a member since then.

I’ve performed many duties with the club since rejoining:

Served my first term on the BOT from 1994 to 1996

Served as AKA Chairman in 1995. That same year I chaired the first of 2 successful Conventions while with the Niagara Frontier Killifish Association. Also that same year I managed to engage a local printer and initiated the first use of color in JAKA.

I began a second term on the BOT but resigned halfway through the first year.

I was appointed the first BOT Advisor, serving 2 five year terms in that position.

For some inexplicable reason I was made a Fellow of the AKA-twice! I suppose that makes me a jolly good fellow.

I am currently running Publications sales, a position I have held for more than 10 years.

I don’t have any far-fetched plans for how the club should be run. I just think we need to get back to a sound financial position (yes, I approve of the recent dues increase) , try to improve membership numbers and begin to manage this organization according to the original BOT Operating Manual.

While I would appreciate your vote I would appreciate even more if you all managed to vote for somebody. It’s your club!

Jim Mazzola NY. Region 4:

My name is James D. Mazzola III and I am seeking to be elected to the BOT. I am 43 years old and 1 live in Newburgh, NY located in the scenic Hudson Valley. I am married and have a 5 year old son. I have worked in the aviation industry since I started college 25 years ago and currently work in the operations dept of General Electric's corporate airline. My newly constructed fish room contains over 200 tanks mostly filled with cool water Aphyosemions and small rivulus but also includes a few Apistogramma, Lake Tanganyika cichlids and livebearers.

My journey in the killifish hobby began in the late 1990's when I went in my local LFS and saw a tank full of Fp. gardneri and when I asked to buy a few pairs the owner said" are you sure you want to buy them?" I said yes and he asked again "are you sure you want to buy them?" I said yes, why do you keep asking that and the store owner replied" you will start with these and before you know it, you will have more tanks than you can handle". So I left thinking the guy was on drugs. I went back about 2 weeks later and asked if any other species were available to order and he gave me a business card of AKA member Fred Behrmann's business "Athens Aquatics". I contacted Fred and he said, "join the AKA and the killifish world will open up for you" and Fred was right, it did. Since then my collection has continued to expand which was why I had to build a new fish room. I attend the convention every year and a few regional shows as well. I also am very active in the breeding and distribution of killifish in the hobby.

If elected to the BOT, I will focus on promoting the AKA to attract new members, emphasizing how much fun it is to keep these fascinating little jewels and the benefits to being part of the best club in the aquarium hobby. The wealth of knowledge within the AKA is far greater than what can be found on the Internet. Other issues I would address are the lack of show entries at the national convention and how to get new and rare fish in the hands of AKA members. After all, the fish are the main reason we are in this club. I would appreciate your vote.

Bob Meyer IL. Region 3:

Background. My name is Robert “Bob” Meyer and I would like to run for the Board of Trustees. I am 56 years old and I have a little more time now that my three children have grown and moved out of the house (more room for aquariums). My youngest daughter just got married and is living in Germany with her Army husband. I teach business courses (including marketing, accounting, and finance) at Parkland College in Champaign, IL. I also help my wife Nancy at her job with the US Postal Service. I raise and sell Angelfish, water plants, live foods and killifish. Nancy and I formed our local aquarium club, Champaign Area Fish Exchange 30 years ago. I started with guppies 50 years ago while my military father was stationed in Germany. I collected my first fish 45 years ago while playing in the creeks in California. I have been keeping killies for 40 years. I have been an AKA member for 34 years. The local affiliate clubs that I was active in have folded, but I do try to attend the WAKO and Chicago meetings at least once a year.

Achievements. FAAS aquarist of the year award. Went on two NANFA week long collecting trips. Member of the pupfish maintenance group. I’ve hiked Death Valley 8 times including the hike with Al Morales shortly before his death. AKA membership chairman for the past two years. Most new members got their membership packets within two weeks of joining and updating their profile. All membership reports were submitted on time and the committee is under budget. Initiated the drawing for a free pair of killies for new members and the $40 new member special (pair of killies and a year’s AKA membership). AKA judge for the past 25 years. Judged classes in last year’s convention show and this year’s show and many other shows. I have started writing a new member’s column in the BNL. I have been doing a good amount of work ‘behind the scenes’. There are now about 4 JAKA articles that I have encouraged people to write and those articles have been published in JAKA or will show up in the JAKA within the next year. I ask people to write the articles, I help edit them and then send them to our professional editors. I’ve been active on social media trying to make contact with potential members. Most emails and messages are answered within a day. Over 1,000 killifish related posts in the past year. I helped get Lee Summers into his position as publicity chair where I think he will do great things. I look forward to helping Lee grow the hobby.

Agenda. The AKA had over 1,000 members 20 years ago. We fell on some hard times ten years ago. In-fighting, JAKA problems, some poor decisions. I was happy with the course of the AKA over the past 5 years. The last three conventions were great, the JAKA is back on publishing schedule, the 'BNL looks great. But now we are coming up on some challenging times: increasing dues, editor changes, declining

Page 9: of the American Killifish Association - AKAaka.org/!area_Member/Content/eBNL/editions/2018/2018-09... · 2018. 9. 5. · culminating in his thesis "The fishes of the Lake Rukwa drainage"

9

membership. THERE ARE SOME GREAT CANDIDTES RUNNING FOR THE BOT. BUT I THINK WHAT THE MEMBERSHIP NEEDS IS SOMEONE WHO WILL LISTEN TO THE MEMBERSHIP, MAKE INTELLIGENT DECISIONS AND COMMUNICATE INFORMATION BACK TO THE MEMBERSHIP. I’d like to get back to at least 700 members in my three year term on the BOT. To this end, I’m pushing for more publicity, good JAKA articles, and more involvement from members. Part of my agenda is pushing for more species in the hobby. Some type of species list being maintained or a new and rare species import program. I’m also ‘big’ on species maintenance. While we all like to see the new species, I’d like to keep the old species in the hobby too. How did we let fish like Terranatos dolichopterus, Fundulopanchax occidentalis and even Fundulopanchax gardneri Rayfield move from relatively common to almost gone in the hobby? At the 2016 convention, with dozens of new Epiplatys, not a single Epiplatys annulatus was exhibited? More membership will allow us to keep more killies in the hobby. More communication and education will allow us to keep more species alive and available in the hobby. I’d like to be the new BOT representative that helps make the AKA membership grow!

Another AKA member has gone to press. Available at Amazon.com.

Setting up an Experiment

Killie Korner by Bob Meyer

With photos from and special thanks to Lee Summers, Bryan Nelson, Anton Mitchell, and Jeff Wasley

When I talk to killie hobbyists, I find several traits that most of us share. We are concerned about nature. We are dedicated to our fish. We would like to share this hobby with others. And most of us like to experiment. There are so many videos and articles on how to do something killie related. And yet, most of us love to experiment and see if we can do it better. Or at least do it OUR WAY. I’d like you to consider setting up an experiment and then sharing your results with others. Maybe write up a copy of your experiment, include some pictures and send it to the JAKA editors. Or send it to me ([email protected]) and I will polish it up a little and send it to the JAKA editors. So, what makes a good experiment? What are the steps in conducting an experiment? A quick internet search found this link to an article titled ‘Steps in Experimental Research’: https://cirt.gcu.edu/research/developmentresources/research_ready/experimental/steps_exp_res Which is an article on setting up an experiment. And in that article was this YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXIo-E5y2fo&feature=youtu.be

Since I could not get that embedded YouTube video to run, I searched YouTube and found an alternate video titled ‘The Experimental Method’: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay1o8XjoMVk

So, here are some steps listed on how to do an experiment from the article cited above titled ‘Steps in Experimental Research’:

1. “Select a topic. This involves simply identifying an area of interest or general subject.

2. Identify the research problem. Given the topic or subject, the researcher must now identify specific problems or questions that relate to the subject. The researcher may be familiar with subject and may already know the problem they want to research. If the researcher is new to the topic, it may be helpful to examine literature and previous studies, as well as talk to other researchers. The problem selected should be important to the field and be of significance to others in the discipline.

3. Conduct a literature search. Once the research problem is identified, a literature search should be conducted before proceeding to design the experiment. It is helpful to know what studies have been performed, the designs, the instruments used,

the procedures and the findings. This information will guide the researcher and help them create a project that extends or compliments existing research.

4. Construct a hypothesis. In this step, the researcher states the research question as a hypothesis. This provides the basis for all other decisions in the process and therefore, it is a critical step.

5. Determine the design of the research. The researcher should review the hypothesis and verify that an experimental design is the appropriate research design needed to answer the question.

6. Determine the research methods. In this step, the researcher will identify and plan the details necessary to conduct the research. This includes identifying the test subjects, materials, data collection instruments and methods, and the procedures for the conducting the experiment.

7. Conduct the research and test the hypothesis. The experimental procedures will be carried out in this phase.

8. Analyze the data. Experimental research data lends itself to a variety of potential statistical analyses. The appropriate analysis is determined by the research question and the type of data. Formulate conclusions. Review the data and determine if it confirms or disproves the hypothesis.”

Adding to this, I thought that I would add a few experiment ‘terms’. Control group. Usually we test our new method against the old method or the method that is not receiving any type of treatment. This is what differentiates experimental or scientific method research from other types of research. Dependent and independent variable. The independent variable is usually an item that is not affected by our research. Time in days would be an independent variable. The dependent variable is a number that we are monitoring for our experiment. Usually the independent variable is shown on the x axis of a graph and the dependent variable is shown on the y axis. Hypothesis. This is the idea that we are testing. Hypothesis can be set up in a multitude of ways.

One set of hypotheses might be:

There is no relationship between the independent and dependent variable

As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable increases.

As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable decreases.

There is a relationship between the dependent and independent variable, but we can’t find the relationship.

Having said all of this. I have decided to set up an experiment. My basic question is:

‘Does adding food to a container of java moss increase the infusoria in the container’? With the idea being that if we could get more infusoria to live on java moss, then we would have a better food source for feeding newly hatched killifish fry. So, I am setting up two plastic shoe boxes of java

moss. Both will be placed on a shelf next to each other. Same temperature, same amount of light, same water, and nearly identical starts of java moss.. I will try to keep as many of the experimental variables as constant as can be! One will be just

plain, unfed java moss. This will be my control group. The other container will be java moss and I will add a couple drops of liquid fry food to the container every other day. Or at least when I remember to do it. Thank you Bryan Nelson for the tube of liquid-fry. So, I now have my control group (no food) and my experimental group (being fed). My independent variable will be number of days since I started the experiment. My dependent variable will be the number of infusoria that I detect with a magnifying glass in 3 drops of water. So, basically, if I graphed the results, I would have days on the x axis and number of infusoria on the y axis. With two lines on the y axis, one for the control group and one for the experimental group.

I’ve got an experiment to play with for the next month. What kind of experiment will you set up?

Membership Report September 2018 by Bob Meyer

BOT (Board of Trustee) email addresses are listed in the bnl. If you feel that something can be improved or if you just want to thank someone for the job that they are doing, please email them! If you feel that your voice is not being heard, then look carefully at the slate of candidates running for the Board of Trustees. Find someone who you think will listen to you and will help lead the AKA on to success!

The address for me, the membership chairman is [email protected] . It was suggested to me that maybe I should contact the people who do not renew their membership to see if there is something that the AKA can do better. While I will try to contact some of the non-renewing members, I would also like to encourage you to email me and tell me why you did not renew. Or if you are a renewing member, email me if you have ideas on things that can be improved or how we can attract new members.

I encourage you to go to the aka.org site and find the membership roster. Search by state to see if there are any AKA members near you. There is also an online abbreviated version of the beginner’s guide at the AKA site.

Below are the new members for August. When you join the AKA, it is a two step process. You have to pay to join, then you have to go to the AKA website and update your profile with your address. Without that address, we cannot send you business news letters and Journals of the American Killifish Association (bnl and JAKA). One member this month still needs to update his profile. If you know Nelson Humberto Espana Restrepo, please ask him to update his profile. But we still have some addresses in our membership roster that are incomplete.

AKA membership is now about 625 members. With about 527 regular members and about 98 paid life members.

A new JAKA was sent out. If you did not receive a JAKA in thWe last month, please contact me. IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE EDITORIAL STAFF IS RUNNING LOW ON ARTICLES AND IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA FOR AN ARTICLE, PLEASE CONTACT ME, OR GARY HAAS ([email protected]) OR ANY OF THE BOT MEMBERS.

If any of the following new members are near you, please look up their information in the AKA roster (at aka.org). Then send them a welcome email!

AKA Digital Presentation Program

July 2018 Update

The goal of this program is to provide ‘killi ambassadors’ high-quality presentations about killifish to give at local aquarium club meetings. Presentations are available to AKA members in good standing. To obtain the talks, simply e-mail your name and e-mail address to [email protected]. The coordinators will send you a link you can use to download the talk or talks, in PowerPoint format. A typical download is around 30-40 megabytes, so you'll need a little free space on your computer for the download.

When you present the talk at a local aquarium club, the AKA donates a free 1 year membership to that club. The club is free to distribute that membership how they see fit. Once you have the contact information for the new member, send that to [email protected]. Please be sure that the contact information contains the recipient's name, address and e-mail address. After you present, are eligible for KHY points. Please e-mail [email protected], for details of the KHY program.

Also, PLEASE reply to [email protected] once you have the contact information for the free membership recipi-ents. Thank you!

Available talks:

“Introduction to Killifish”

“Killifish for the Experienced Aquarist”

“Survival Mechanisms of the Genus Nothobranchius and the implications for the Killifish breeder”

Internet Committee Report

September 2018 Jim Langan

I hope the summer has been enjoyable to all of you and you are preparing for a new season of Afilliate

Club regional shows. I've had a little extra time this month to work on the website and I've added a few new features as follows.

The annual show results area of the member login

has changed dramatically, all of the annual results are presented from 2003 - 2018, except 2010 & 2012. I don't have access to these years results, however, I've

requested them. The results are now presented on a sliding menu with a picture of each year's show winner. We are missing several years individual awards and Mark Hlavaty is helping me perform

research to fill in these deficiencies from past shows. We also need the Best of Show winner for 2009 so I can use the correct picture.

The monthly eBNL are displayed similar as the

annual show, presented with a sliding menu and a randomly selected photo from our vast killie photo KMI. A pull-down menu for each year is presented

allowing easy selection of the month to present. After a careful review we are missing two (2)

month's eBNL if anyone has the August 2013 or the July 2014 in pdf digital format please contact me.

On-line voting is setup and active for this year's

candidates. So please login and use your once annual opportunity to voice your opinion in our BOT election.

Please note the AKA can host your regional clubs

website. We have on-line space for each and every affiliate club. If your club is not hosted by the AKA let us know and we can provide a direct link on the

Affiliate page to your clubs website that will work seamlessly. If your club has a Facebook page we can link to your page also and provide a direct link/

search to your Facebook page. If you have any questions let me know and I'll discuss these options to you at your convenience.

My number one complaint on the website is the lack of members using the Forums. We have new

member's posting inquiries and questions and very few responses from our membership. It's every AKA member's responsibility to assist new AKA

member's to be successful. The more successes with new members the newer members will stay, without success with their killies new members have no

incentive to retain their AKA memberships.

I wish everyone well, Jim Langan, AKA Webmaster

AKA Online Beginner’s Guide

Did you know that the original AKA Beginner’s guide is available to anyone at www.aka.org/beginner (English) and http://aka.org/wp-content/uploads/AKA-bg-Eng-Cn-side-by-side-RTW.pdf (Traditional Chinese.) These guides are still the best online materials available on the Web that provide a comprehensive guide to killifish husbandry. There are a lot of really inadequate materials out there, so if you get a query from an online contact about killies, point them at the guide as a starter, they’ll be more successful as a result. If you can translate or proofread a translation, feel free to contact [email protected]. We especially need a proofreader for the Spanish version. Thanks!

AKA Members—

Pay particular attention to the RED Letters, indicating last-minute changes.

The Keystone Clash, originally a cichlid show and more recently an all-aquarium show, is this year making a concerted effort to bring in killifish. It has been several years since there has been an AKA-sanctioned East Coast killi show. This year there is one, in Harrisburg, PA. AKA affiliates Keystone Killy Group and Chesapeake Area Killifish Club are piggybacking on the veteran Clash organization to bring this event to you. Keystone Clash Killifish Mail-in Show Entry Instructions Details about the Clash, including registration info, are at the Clash website, keystoneclash.com. Due to spectacular all-species response, carry-in show entries have been closed. Mail-in fish are different. Show registration for mail-ins is free. Pay no attention to any instructions to the contrary on the show registration page; the $3 pre-registration entry fee does not apply to mail-ins. Mail-in show entries must be auctioned (70/30 split), but if the bag doesn't fetch a $10 bid, it becomes a donation. The auction is managed by the MyGroupAuctions.com website, so all mail-in entries must also be registered with MyGroupAuctions under the Keystone Clash group. Mail-in show fish are registered as follows:

1. Download an entry form at the Clash website, from “The Show”->”Fish Show Registration” pulldown menu.; 2. Fill it out and email it to [email protected]. BY SATURDAY 8 SEPTEMBER. It is a fillable pdf, so if you fill it out using your computer, we can process it without having to re-type it.; 3. Register your mail-in show fish for the Keystone Clash auction at MyGroupAuctions.com. This site provides online help for the required processes of registering the entrant, joining a group (Aquarium Club of Lancaster County), and adding items to an auction (Keystone Clash 2018 ACLC/CCY).; 4. Notify me by text message, telephone, or voicemail at: Gary Haas 410-459-8397, on or before Wednesday 12 September. This notification is so we can set up tanks for your entries, and be on the lookout for your shipment. I need to know how many boxes and how many entries. 5.Ship your entries to the show venue, below. All mail-ins must arrive on Thursday 13 Sept. or Friday 14 Sept. Include a copy of your Clash Fish Entry Form and your MyGroupAuctions list including lot numbers. The latter can be printed from the MyGroupAuctions website. And a phone number. Bagged fish should be identified with the associated MyGroupAuctions lot number. Lists should be secured in a separate plastic bag or laminated to prevent damage due to any water leaks. Clarion Hotel & Conference Center Keystone Clash Event 148 Sheraton Drive New Cumberland PA 17070 ATTN: Callie Parker/Gary Haas

Clash killi staff will take it from there. Mark your calendar, 14-16 September 2018. And go register at KeystoneClash.com. One-day prices are now available, or you can see the show for free, and participate in the auction for $5 only.

Questions? Visit the Clash website www.KeystoneClash.com and FaceBook page (Keystone Clash), or drop me an email and we can talk. [email protected].
