PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Program Note:
Our Founder’s Day event scheduled for Wednesday
evening, October 27th has been cancelled. We will meet
at Marie Callendar’s on Tuesday morning, October
26th for our regular scheduled Program meeting.
As President I have a lot of catching up to do! We got home two
days ago and am recouping from jet lag. Europe was a blast and my husband planned
the perfect tour of the United Kingdom for us! We visited England, Wales, Scotland
and Southern Ireland on our own and in a rental car. We spent just over three weeks
driving on the left side of very narrow passage ways and a few good highways speeding
along at 140 MPH oops, I mean kilometers… it was fun and absolutely breathtaking. If
I had to say which I liked better I would say Ireland due to diversity of the coastal cities,
mountains, rivers and great Pubs with fabulously fun music. We also enjoyed an 8 day
cruise from Venice, Dubrovnik, Turkey and Athens the first week of our vacation. So
now I need a vacation from our Vacation.
It is great to be home and was amazed at our board meeting to find out what happened
in my absence. The Many Mansion’s presentation and the personal project planned at
Joni’s on the 13th, Camarillo’s Got Talent final on Saturday, October 16th, my personal
project on the 20th and the BIG day coming in November, our incredible Enchilada
Sale. (The order form is in this newsletter which can be copied and/or emailed for dis-
tribution to all your friends.)
Our newsletter is full of great information thanks to our Editor Chris Hinds. She is do-
ing fabulous job hunting and gathering newsworthy information. It is great to be Presi-
dent of a club and know that you can take off for a month, come home and see such
energy and commitment in this SI Camarillo Club!
We received ―big Congratulations‖ from GEM Brooke when she learned we joined
forces with SI Oxnard and SI Ventura to work in the Women Today Expo! It is and will
be an excellent public relations event in Ventura County and a great way to expose So-
roptimist.
Please keep your eye on the Calendar as there are a lot of events this month and next!
Please remember to mark the day for our big Enchilada Sale on November 6th. I am
looking forward to seeing you all at our next Business meeting.
Your President, cheers to all!!
Up, Up and Away

SIA is pleased to announce a new collaboration!
Soroptimist International of the Americas has partnered with Soroptimist International of Europe (SIE) to increase the scope and impact of the Soroptimist Disaster Grants. Soroptimist Dis-aster Grants seek to meet the special needs of women and girls before, during and after disas-ters. This new partnered-program builds on the success each federation has had with their own disaster grant programs and through prior part-nered-projects addressing specific disasters in Kenya, Haiti and Chile. By working together, SIA and SIE can increase awareness about the ways women and girls disproportionately suffer from disasters, as well as the impact of the grants.
Each federation will maintain separate disaster funds, but applications for grants will be reviewed by both federations and impact will be tracked and reported jointly. Applications for grants and donations from clubs in SIA will continue to be submitted to SIA headquarters. We are looking forward to this new venture with our Soroptimist partners from the European federation.
Coming Soon: SIA and SIE are also partnering on Soroptimist Project Matching, matching re-sources between clubs—those that need assis-tance (funds, goods and services, or hands-on assistance) with a local project and those able to assist. It will enable Soroptimist clubs to work to-gether to support the outstanding and sustain-able work of other clubs, regardless of federation affiliation.

Operation Seabee Christmas Service Project:
See pages 9—11
Here’s an update on our project to support two
Port Hueneme Seabee Battalions deployed to
Iraq & Afghanistan. As you know they will be
away over the holidays. SI Camarillo will help
the Family Readiness Groups (FRG) for NMCB
(Mobile Naval Construction Battalion) 40 &
NMCB 3 to send boxes to each Seabee, about
1200 total. Family Readiness Groups are volun-
teers who support military families, usually
spouses of those deployed.
Our name is listed at the top as spearheading the
project as well as commitments from others.
The Stitches of Love group has agreed to sew
neck gaiters-polar fleece cowl scarves, to keep
them warm this winter. Soroptimist Interna-
tional of Oxnard voted to participate in collect-
ing donations. We’ll have a place to store items
at the Seabee base and we’ll partner with the
Seabee families for collecting and packing. We
have other interested groups and individuals
that want to help. We are always looking for
other organizations to join this heart-warming
project so if you know of any other group inter-
ested please print our pages 9 and 10 of this
newsletter for handouts.
Be on the lookout for new or gently used items
like; books, current magazines, especially
health & fitness, sporting equipment, balls, bats,
dumbbells, yoga mats, music CD’s, DVD mov-
ies and computer and box games, ask your
friends and family to do the same. Collect
empty Pringles cans for the FRG to mail home-
made cookies.
We have collection barrels and boxes around town.
Please take your items to these locations. Ask your
fellow church members, club members, family,
friends, foes, and co-workers to contribute toward
this cause. We have until October 10th, to place the
items at these collection places in Camarillo, which is
listed:

collection deadline.)
The packing party has been changed to October 22 &
23, and probably will be at the American Legion on
Wagon Wheel in Oxnard. I will confirm this, as soon
as I know. Any questions while I am gone, please
contact Susan Peterson .
One more thing! We donated $300 toward fabric for
the Stitches of Love neck warmer project for these
boxes. They are sewing on October 8th to complete
the neck warmers for the packing party deadline. Very
simple sewing if you sew. If you don’t sew, we need
someone to clip threads, count and pack boxes, track
supplies, lots of small jobs that make a big difference.
Remember, we need 1300 of EVERYTHING!

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER
AWARENESS MONTH By: Chris Hinds
In the September newsletter I brought to your atten-
tion the Relay of Life which took place at Adolfo
Camarillo High School on October 2-3. This was the
start of cancer awareness month where organized
walks are taking place all over the country.
Here is one thing I do every day in support for
women and breast cancer. I signed up to receive an
email from the website
www.thebreastcancersite.com . They send me an
email each day. I click on the button to give a free
mammogram to a women in need. It is so simple to
do and to a make a difference in other women’s
lives—the best part, it’s FREE!
I take it one step further. In my business, I give away
gift baskets. I shop on this site for the baskets or
bags, and goodies that we give away each day at our
trade shows. Each time I buy something on the site
the money is donated to this organization. This is a
Win-Win for everyone. You can make a difference in
someone life with something so easy to do. Stay
healthy and well!

Betty Gatlin’s Reunion Times
Betty & Glenn Gatlin just returned from a trip to Cen-
tral California and Paso Robles. Highlight of the trip
was Betty’s ―55&1/2‖ year High School Class Reunion
in Oakdale, CA. (I know, I really am not old enough for
that.) Why 55-1/2 years? (Actually 57th) because when
we celebrated our 50 year, we had lost a number of
classmates and decided we did not want to wait another
five years, so we started meeting every two and half
years. We were a graduating class of 171 and have lost
thirty– one to date. Forty class members plus spouses
and significant others were in attendance. All 72 enjoyed
a brunch. I have three younger brothers and all of us
graduated from Oakdale High. My youngest brother
still lives in Oakdale along with his children and grand-
children who are third generation Oakdale.
In Paso Robles we visited friends of forty-five years
who up until three years ago lived in Ventura. And yes it
was hot! Two days it was 106!
Our next trip is schedule for four wonderful days in Oc-
tober as we host our RV Club to Temecula, CA, at the
lovely Pachanga RV Resort.
Susie Hafer Special Notes……
I celebrated my birthday at Chile Peppers last Fri-
day night and it was fabulous! Friday night is free
corkage night so bring your own wine if you want.
The regular Mexican menu is available but the
chef special menu has two appetizers, two entrees
and a dessert. We had a beautiful beet and goat
cheese salad with perfect vinaigrette, crusted cod
on black bean sauce and risotto. My friend had the
New York Steak and the tamarind-rosemary sauce
was to die for. My birthday dessert was cheese-
cake with a thick homemade chocolate sauce. Who
would guess this quiet unassuming restaurant
would offer a first class meal? This is my new fa-
vorite place for Friday night! Don’t tell everyone, I
don’t want to start standing in line!
I will be in Oklahoma for two weeks for my bi-
annual trip to visit my grandmother who turned102
last July. She has been blind for the last 10 years
but still lives alone on an isolated ranch in central
Osage County. No family but has great friends
who check on her most days. She goes to church
every Saturday night and gets her hair done on
Thursday afternoons after having lunch at the Hole
in the Wall Café. Grandma has her own Facebook
page and has a quick wit which keeps us going.
This location is so isolated I don’t always get cell
service, so if you need to reach me, please leave a
message or text and I will get back to you when I
go to the ―big city‖!
Valuable Tip: I wish I had paid attention to:
Vacuum your refrigerator coils at least
once a year, save energy and save your
fridge. And when all else fails, read the
directions…...Susie Hafer

Getting to know you – Featuring Susan Peterson, aka mushroomsetc Guest columnist Anne Howington
Let’s see – A nice, Catholic, Midwestern girl stays married to the same husband for nearly 50 years, and raised 6 kids, plus a lot of mushrooms. What more is there to know? Susan and I met at Chili Peppers for an early lunch and a chance to talk without interruption. And talk we did. What a delightful, loquacious lady! To get to know her better I asked if we could “start at the very beginning.” Q. Where did you grow up? A. In South Bend, Indiana. My father owned a grocery store and he knew my husband Jon’s father who was in the mushroom business. Our families grew friendly but we didn’t live near each other. The Petersons lived in Niles, MI. I had such a happy childhood and many happy memories of that time and place. The only event that darkened those years was the sudden death of my father in an accident. I was 8 at the time. He and I were very close and it still makes me sad to think of his loss. We stayed in the same house (my Dad had taken care of our future) and I went to Dunbarton College in Washington, DC. The summer I was 19 I went to the lake cottage with my Mother and sister. Some of our Soroptimists knew her, she was in our club, too. Well, Michele and I met up with the Petersons. With them was this BEAUTIFUL cowboy – their son, Jon. Jon and his sister and parents had moved to Whittier, CA in 1954 but they kept their summer home on the St. Joseph River in Niles, MI. He’s a little older than I am and was attending Cal Poly here in California. He was visiting his fam-ily before heading to a summer job. We invited them to the cottage to see Mother and I got her to invite them to a barbeque. The rest is history. We had a real coast-to-coast romance, getting married the next year and moving to San Luis Obispo. It sounds like it went pretty fast, but Jon said we had to get married. He says: “I couldn’t afford the phone calls.” We have six children. There are four sons, and two daughters. The first three came bang, bang, bang! The others are spaced a little further apart. My “baby” is Catherine, sixteen years younger than her oldest brother. Jon’s family was in the mushroom business for many years and eventually he decided it was time to try it for himself. In 1985 “Mushrooms etc.” came into being. We bought the property on Cawelti. It had been a lemon grove so lem-ons became the “et cetera.” Q. What’s the BEST part of having the business? A. Having all the mushrooms (and lemons) I could ask for, any time I wanted them. And having a family business gives everyone a chance to be part of the success of the family. Q. Do you miss having the business? A. No, not really. The business climate in California had changed and it just got to be time to end it. One thing I do miss, though. I was the first female chairman of a North American Mushroom Conference. This was the 5
th confer-
ence and we had attendees from all over the world. Australia, Germany, Japan. Just everywhere! At the closing dinner I was asked to make a short speech and I was given a standing ovation. Everyone said it was a great confer-ence and I had done a GREAT job. We even turned a profit on the event and that was another first. I wouldn’t mind still being involved but we’re not active in the business anymore. Q. You’ve described a very full and fulfilling life. Tell me, what was your ambition – or how did you think your life would go – before that fateful encounter with the Cowboy of your dreams? A. I studied languages and I thought I’d like to be an interpreter for the United Nations. In retrospect I guess I wish I had studied business.
8
Q. Do you have a BEST trip you’ve ever taken with kids? A. I think my BEST travel memory – with kids – was the year we drove to Nebraska, pulling a trailer, to pick up an antique tractor. We had two grandsons with us and it was filled with laughs, giggles, and a lot of smiles. I can still picture the boys sitting up on the tractor eating their lunch and waving at passing motorists. Q. Is there a BEST trip that didn’t involve the kids? A. Oh yes. That would be a trip Jon and I and some cousins and friends took to Italy. It was in October,1995 and we went to Cerisano, Italy in the Calabria region. That’s where my Father was born. As I said, he died when I was 8. Q. Is your Mother still alive? A. My Mother had just died suddenly in August, shortly before we went to Italy. She had been treated for a minor heart ailment one day and three days later she was dead. This was a terrible shock to all of us. Q. Have you overcome any significant challenge in your life? A. I think raising six kids is challenge enough for anyone. The problem with my voice is not something to “overcome.” It’s been diagnosed as “Spasmodic Dysphonia” – the same problem Robert Kennedy, Jr. has. They don’t know what causes it. It came on suddenly several years ago. There’s no pain and except for some difficulty talking on the phone – or trying to get my point across when several people are talking at the same time – it’s just become part of who I am. Q. How did you get involved with Soroptimist? A. Bless Betty Gatlin. She encouraged me to join and kept after me until I did. Here I was, a mushroom farmer, with these ladies who worked in offices. You know how well “put together” Betty always is, and our President at that time ALWAYS had her hair “just so” and her shoes and purse always matched, and her jewelry was just right for the clothes she wore. And there I was in jeans, my standard work clothes. I’m so glad she was persistent. This club means so much to me. Q. Is there one project the club has been involved in that stands out in your mind as your favorite? R. A. That would be “Reach for the desserts.” We set up a program mentoring battered women who were clients of Interface. I think that gave me the most satisfaction, a real sense of being involved in a successful, worthy, hands-on project. Q. Is there a particular project you’d like to see us pursue? A. I don’t think of this as a “club project” but I’d like to see us focus strongly on recruiting young women. Show them that we’re viable and enthusiastic and encourage them to hone their leadership skills as well as becoming good team players. Q. Last question. If you were doing this interview (with a sister Soroptimist), who would you like to ―get to know bet-ter?‖ A. Linda Bortolott. I know her pretty well and I’d like to have a chance to get to know her even better. And then I could “introduce” her to all of our members.

Operation Seabee Christmas
We have an opportunity to make a huge difference in our own community. Two Seabee battalions from Port
Hueneme will be deployed to Iraq & Afghanistan in the next few months. They will be separated from friends
and family and away over the holidays. You can help ensure that each Seabee receives a personal holiday box
by donating ―Wish List‖ items or money, lots of small contributions really add up.
OK, sit down, that means we’ll need to send 1300 boxes!
It’s a big task in a short time but here’s how you can help:
Collect new or nearly-new books, current magazines, especially health & fitness, sporting equipment-
balls, bats, mitts, nets, dumbbells, yoga mats, music CD's, DVD movies, X Box, PS2 & 3 games and
computer games.
Collect empty Pringles cans to mail homemade cookies.
Sponsor an individual box with a donation of $20.00.
Purchase something special on their "wish list", pass the list around and ask friends to pick up an extra
item or two when shopping.
Simple, everyday things make a big difference in their safety, health, comfort and morale.
Please support these brave men & women who serve our country.
