The coastal district has 1,649 Bangladeshi settlers. Mahakalpada tehsil alone houses 1,551 of them. So far, 137 Bangladeshis have been detected in the voters list in Mahakalpada tehsil. As many as 3,987 Bang- ladeshis have been staying in Odisha illegally. Of them, 1,649 have been staying in coastal Kendrapara district followed by 1,112 in Paradip and Jagatsinghpur, officials said. Of the 3,987 infiltrators, 1,551 foreign nationals from 362 families living in Mahakalpada Tehsil of Kendrapara district were served deportation notice in 2005. However, the deporta- tion move has been kept on hold following intervention by the then union govern- ment. In an attempt to curb influx of illegal immigrants, committees comprising rev- enue, police and forest offi- cials have been formed to intensify vigil on infiltra- tion. These panels have been working in cohesion in infil- tration-affected Maakalpada and Rajnagar tehsils, they said. The employers in pri- vate sectors particularly in marine fishing sectors have been issued directions to engage people in work only after thoroughly cross-check- ing their nationality and an- tecedents. They have been warned of facing stringent legal action if found giving shelter or engaging illegal immigrants, officials con- cluded. BERHAMPUR, SEPT 16 / --/ Odisha Public e-Library, set up by Berhampur Mu- nicipal Corporation (BeMC) here in collaboration with an organisation of non-resident Odias living in US, is all set to be modernised, an official said. At present, the e-library is equipped with a dozen com- puters with high-speed internet connection, two servers and a projector. The e-library has a sitting capac- ity for 50 persons and is lo- cated at the first floor of the municipal town hall. "We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the Odisha Society of the Ameri- cas (OSA) recently to mod- ernise the e-library adding more facilities for holding workshops and seminars," said BeMC Commissioner Chakravarti Singh Rathore. The MoU is valid for two years. "The OSA has agreed to provide technical guid- ance for making the library ICT (information and commu- nications technology) ena- bled and support for its growth and development," said B Nageswar Subudhi, an eye specialist, who is playing a coordinator between the civic body and the OSA. The OSA has agreed to provide all necessary support to conduct lecture series with subject experts, he said. "It is not merely a library where people can only browse e- books. Our aim is to make it as a resource centre and knowledge hub to cater to the growing needs of the people, especially students," said Subudhi. The civic body said it would provide audio- video facilities. The BeMC is also planning to automate the library with software like e- Granthalaya. The corpora- tion would tie up with the National Informatics Centre to avail its e-Granthalaya so that users can browse other magazines and e-books from the Internet, said Basudev Panigrahy,management infor- mation system officer of the corporation. In the first phase, OSA had provided Rs 20 lakh to the chief minister's relief fund for setting up of the dig- ital library. People are al- lowed to use the library for free. After its modernisation, it will boost the library move- ment in the city and at the same time help computer- savvy poor students, espe- cially job-seekers, added Subudhi. Putting up 'anti-government' posters, killing of civilians on charges of being po- lice informers, attack on government build- ings and establishments, roads and giving bandh call have now became a thing of the past, said Koraput superintendent of police, Kanwar Vishal Singh. "It can be certainly said that Maoists are on the back foot in Narayanpatna. Influence of Naxals is on the wane. There has been sharp fall in their or- ganisational strength," said Singh. Intensive combing operations by security forces and community policing programmes to address various problems of the villagers are pay- ing dividends and the Maoist leadership is demoralised in the area, he said. "Though the Maoist leadership is disillusioned and de- moralised, we cannot afford to be complacent as in guerrilla warfare sometimes the Mao- ists do tactical retreat to execute some ma- jor offensive," the SP said. The body of 32-year-old Mary Beyong of Modirijo who went missing since Friday, was retrieved by Banderdewa Police and NDRF team from Dikrongn river at Nepali Gaon near No 2 Pithaguri village in Assams Lakhimpur district on Saturday night, capital deputy commissioner Prince Dhawan said. However, a 10-year-old girl Pangpi Beyong was still missing though search and rescue teams were on the job to trace her, the DC said. Flash flood and landslides triggered by incessant rains in the past few days, ravaged several parts of the state capital on Friday morning washing away 26 houses, while over 60 houses were fully or partially dam- aged at affected sites like Modirijo, Donyi Polo area, Chandra Nagar, Lobi, GSS Police colony, Press colony, he said. The approach road to Modirijo has been completely washed away while half of the culvert has been reported to be damaged in Donyi polo area. Itanagar MLA Techi Kaso and the DC distributed relief materials like blankets, utensils and food items to the victims whose houses were totally washed away or damaged. A medical team also participated in the relief mission and provided first aid, conducted health check-up of all those injured at Modirijo and Donyi Polo Colony. Arunchal MP urges Centre for dredging of Siang river ITANAGAR, SEPT 16 /--/ Lok Sabha MP from Arunachal Pradesh, Ninong Ering has suggested to the Centre for dredging of the Siang river to solve the recur- rent flood and erosion prob- lems in the downstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. The Siang river is called the Tsangpo in China and in Assam it is called the Brahmaputra. The Congress MP from Arunachal East con- stituency on Saturday in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi apprised him of the large-scale soil erosion taking place along the banks of Siang river in East Siang district which has posed a se- rious threat to the lives of people in riverine areas. With Siang river in spate and flowing above danger level, the MP expressed deep con- cern over large-scale siltation in the riverbed and soil erosions in downstream areas of Borguli and Serum villages under Mebo sub-di- vision and Pertung, Sika- Bamin and Sika-Tode in Pasighat area. The victim, A Shakuntala Devi, was alone at home when the incident occurred, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vijay Kumar Mahato said. She sustained head injuries and there were also stab wounds at two places on her body, he said. The victim was living with her daughter, who had been to a clinic for an eye operation. When she returned home from the clinic, she found her mother in a pool of blood and raised an alarm, the police officer said adding that the old lady was taken to a nearby hospital but she was declared brought dead. "We are verifying the CCTV camera footages to identify the culprit," he said. The body has been sent for post-mortem in M G M Hospital. The church, founded by young Kissor way backin 1887, will be celebrating the 131st Anniversary on Sep-tember 18 across the Khasi-Jaintia and Karbi Anglong re-gion of Meghalaya and Assam respectively.
