Dear Sisters and Brothers,  

A few days ago I came across this reflection by Fr. Donagh O’Shea, a Dominican priest from Ireland. As we celebrate  this weekend  the Feast of  the Body and Blood of Christ,  I’d  like  to  share with  you what Fr. O’Shea says about the nourishment that we find every time we celebrate the Eucharist.   

“We experienced our mother first as a source of food, and through that visible channel we experienced her as a source of love. God is mothering us, attracting us, trying to tame us frightened creatures. How do you  tame an animal? By  feeding  it. Gradually  the animal begins  to  trust you, begins  to believe  in your goodwill. We were  (and maybe we  still  are)  like  little  frightened  animals. We  have  to  be  tamed  into human society. Love  is  invisible and needs a visible channel. That visible channel  is originally  food. This wisdom of  the body  is  taken up and exalted  in  the Eucharist. The  food which  is  the Eucharist has  the deepest significance. It is about our relationship with God, the ultimate womb from which our existence came.  

At the heart of that relationship, for Christians, is Jesus. The great 14th‐century mystic, Julian of Norwich, not only  called God our  ‘mother’, but  she  called  Jesus our mother! This may  seem very  strange, even weird. But, as always, she meant something luminous, and she had profound reasons for saying it. She did not mean that Jesus  is  like your mother! She meant the reverse: your mother  is  like Jesus! Your mother fed you from her own body. Our mother’s care for us may well be the best image we have of God ‐ and of Jesus.”  

On this feast of the Body and Blood of the Lord we are reminded once again that in the Eucharist we find the nourishment we need to continue on the journey of life.  

You have likely noticed that throughout the year we have some bilingual Masses in English and in Spanish at  Saint Mary  Star of  the  Sea.  These bilingual Masses  remind  us  that we want  to be one parish,  one people, united  in  faith despite our  lingual and cultural differences. During  the  last year,  the number of Spanish speaking people attending the 8:30am Mass  in English has  increased to the point that I see the need to celebrate the morning weekly Mass more bilingually. With this in mind, I now see the value of a bilingual weekly morning Mass that will help our faith community to worship as one family. Starting on Monday, July 1st, our weekly morning Mass (Monday through Saturday) will be more bilingual with the intention that both English and Spanish speaking parishioners may worship together, under the language of faith, the one Creator of us all. Also, since the 8:30 morning Mass will be bilingual, there will not be a 7:30 AM Spanish Mass on Tuesdays and Fridays. My prayer for St. Mary Star of the Sea is that a greater number of us  in both  the English  and Spanish‐speaking  communities will find  the  value of worshiping together.

Queridas hermanas y hermanos,  

Hace unos días me encontré con esta reflexión del Padre   Donagh O'Shea, un sacerdote dominicano de Irlanda. Ya que celebramos este fin de  semana  la Fiesta del Cuerpo y  la Sangre de Cristo, me gustaría compartir  con  ustedes  lo  que  el  Fr.    O’Shea  dice  sobre  el  alimento  que  encontramos  cada  vez  que celebramos la Eucaristía.  

Desde el principio de nuestra vida nos damos cuenta de que nuestra madre es la fuente de alimento, y a través  de  ese  canal  visible  la  experimentamos  como  una  fuente  de  amor.    Dios  nos  está  cuidando, atrayéndonos,  tratando  de  domarnos  como  criaturas  asustadas.    ¿Cómo  se  domestica  un animal?    Alimentándolo.    Gradualmente,  el  animal  confía  en  ti,  comienza  a  creer  en  tu  buena voluntad.    Éramos  (y quizás  todavía  lo  somos)  un  poco  como  animales  asustados.    Tenemos  que  ser domesticados en  la sociedad humana.   El amor es algo  invisible y por  lo tanto necesita algo visible para entenderlo.    Ese  canal  visible  es  originalmente  el  alimento.    Esta  sabiduría  del  cuerpo  es  absorbida  y exaltada en  la Eucaristía.   La comida que es  la Eucaristía tiene el significado más profundo.   Se trata de nuestra relación con Dios, el vientre supremo de donde provino nuestra existencia.  

En el corazón de este alimento de amor para nosotros los cristianos se encuentra Jesús.  La gran mística del siglo XIV, Juliana de Norwich, no solo llamó a Dios nuestra "madre", sino que también llamó a Jesús nuestra “madre”.  Esto puede sonar  un poco extraño, incluso raro.  Sin embargo, lo que ella quiso decir es  algo  espiritual,  y  tenía  razones  profundas  para  decirlo.    ¡No  quiso  decir  que  Jesús  es  como  tu madre!    ella  quiso  decir  lo  contrario:  ¡tu madre  es  como  Jesús!    Tu madre  te  alimentó  de  su  propio cuerpo.  El cuidado de nuestra madre por nosotros puede ser la mejor imagen que tenemos de Dios y de Jesús en la eucaristía: Dios nos alimenta, nos nutre y nos fortalece a través de su Cuerpo y de su Sangre.  

En  esta  fiesta  del  Cuerpo  y  Sangre  del  Señor  se  nos  recuerda  una  vez  más  que  en  la  Eucaristía encontramos el alimento que necesitamos para continuar en el camino de la vida.  

Sabemos que durante el año tenemos algunas Misas bilingües en inglés y en español aquí en Santa María Estrella del Mar.  Estas Misas bilingües nos recuerdan que estamos llamados a ser una parroquia, un solo pueblo, unidos en la fe a pesar de nuestras diferencias de  idioma y culturales.   Durante el último año, el número de personas de habla hispana que asiste a la Misa en inglés de las 8:30 a.m. ha aumentado hasta el punto en que veo la necesidad de celebrar esa misa bilingüe.  Con esta idea en mente, a partir del lunes 1ro de julio nuestra misa semanal de la mañana (de lunes a sábado) será más bilingüe ‐inglés y español. Ya que este cambio se llevará a cabo, empezando en el mes de julio ya no tendremos la Misa en Español los Martes y  los Viernes a  las 7:30 a.m. Ofrezco mi oración para que pronto al  iniciar esta Misa bilingüe por  la mañana  crezca  el  número  de  personas  que  se  acercan  a  la  casa  de  Dios  para  así  continuar escuchando  la  voz  de  Dios  que  nos  llama  a  participar  de  los  sacramentos  juntos  como  una  sola comunidad.                       P.  Roger

and on Wednesday, July 24th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm in the rectory.

We require a copy of your child’s/children’s Baptismal and First Communion (if they have made their First Communion) certificate when you register. We also require that your first payment be made when you register. The first payment for a family with one child in the program is $75. For two children from the same family the first payment is $100 and for three or more in the same family the first payment is $125. Your balance will then be payable in 5 equal payments over a period of five months beginning in October. NO REGISTRATION WILL BE ACCEPTED WITHOUT CERTIFICATES OR PROPER PAYMENT. Religious Education Begins Wednesday, August 28, 2019 The first night of Religious Education is Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at 6:00 pm in Church. All students and at least one parent are required to attend. At this meeting you will receive the RE Handbook, the RE calendar and the first RE Newsletter. If your RE balance is paid in full by August 28, you will receive a 10% discount on your tuition!

Educación Religiosa empieza el miércoles, 28 de agosto, 2019 La primera noche de las clases de educación religiosa es el miércoles, 28 de agosto, a las 6:00 pm en la iglesia. Thanking Fr. Victor for his service. Fr.  Victor will  be  leaving  our  faith  community  at the  end  June.  As  he  moves  on  to  his  next assignment,  we  appreciate  the  work  and  the service  he  has  provided  for  us  all  through  these years. On the weekend of June 29th and 30th we will  have  the  opportunity  to  wish  him  well  and thank Fr. Victor for his ministry and service.  

We  are  looking  for  donations  of  non‐perishable  "finger foods" for the reception. Items such as  cookies and  simple desserts  that will not melt  and  can  be  eaten without  spoons  or  forks would  be  appreciated.  (Please  do  not  bring anything  that must  be  refrigerated  or  heated  as everything will be outside.)   

Donations  can  be  dropped  off  at  the  rectory  on Thursday June 27 and Friday June 28.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If you would like the parish to pray for someone in your  family who  is  ill,  please  call  the  rectory. We will  list  the  names  of  these  people  on  the  cross, which is located on the wall of the shrine within the vestibule of the Church. We will keep the names on this list for three months. 

ORDANDO POR LOS ENFERMOS Si  usted  quiere  que  la  parroquia  ore  por  alguien  de  su familia  que  está  enfermo,  favor  llamar  a  la  Casa Parroquial. Nosotros anotaremos sus nombres en la cruz, la  cual  esta  localizada  en  la pared  del  santuario  dentro del  vestíbulo de  la  Iglesia. Mantendremos  sus nombres en esta lista durante tres mes. 

ESTE SAGRADO ALIMENTO Hoy celebramos el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo. Cada una de  las  lecturas  incluyen una bendición y un  compartir de alimentos. Lo cual nos recuerda de lo  importante que son las  comidas  en  nuestras  vidas.  Cada  comida  trae  el recuerdo de otras comidas: el compartir galletas y  leche, pizza y cerveza, panecillos y pescados, pan y vino. Cuando preparamos  una  comida  para  nuestra  familia,  nuestros amigos,  aun  para  personas  desconocidas,  siempre ponemos  algo  de  nosotros  en  la  preparación  y  en  la comida  misma.  El  Cuerpo  y  la  Sangre  de  Cristo  nos recuerda  lo  que  Dios  puso  en  la  preparación  para  este alimento que celebramos hoy. Compartimos este sagrado alimento  y  somos  transformados  al  tiempo  que recordamos  la muerte  de  Jesús  y  el  sacrificio  que  nutre nuestra fe, sustenta nuestra vida y apoya nuestro trabajo.

THIS SACRED MEAL Today  we  celebrate  the  Most  Holy  Body  and  Blood  of Christ.  Each  of  the  readings  includes  a  blessing  and  a sharing of  food.  They  remind  us  of  the  central  place  of meals in our lives. Each meal brings to mind other meals: the  sharing  of  cookies  and milk,  pizza  and  beer,  loaves and fishes, bread and wine. When we prepare a meal for our  family,  our  friends,  even  strangers,  we  always  put something of ourselves into the prepara on and the meal itself. The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ reminds us of what God put  into the prepara on for this meal  that we celebrate  today. We share  this  sacred meal and are transformed as we remember the death of Jesus and the sacrifice  that  nurtures  our  faith,  sustains  our  lives,  and supports our work.

Baptismal Preparation Sessions are held at 7:00 PM on the 4th Monday  (English) or  1st  Thursday  (Spanish) of the month at the rectory. Parents and Godparents are expected to attend. Please register at the rectory.   

MARRIAGES: Arrangements  should  be made  at  least  4 months  in advance (prior to engaging hall) to allow for adequate preparation  and  instruction.  Contact  the Rectory  for an appointment.  

CONVERTS:  RCIA The Rite of Christian  Initiation of Adults begins each year in September, reaches its climax with Baptism or reception  into  the  Church  at  the  Easter  Vigil  (Holy Saturday), and concludes on the fiftieth day of Easter, the feast of Pentecost.  

COMMUNION CALLS: Please call  the Rectory  to arrange  for Communion  to be brought to the sick.  

SICK CALLS: For  confession,  anointing  of  the  sick  or  in  any emergency, please call the Rectory.

Las pláticas de preparación bautismal  son  el  1er  jueves del mes  (español) y el 4o lunes de cada mes  (ingles), en la  Rectoria.  Papás  y  padrinos  deben  asistir.  Favor  de inscribirse en la Rectoría .   

MATRIMONIOS: Los preparativos deberán hacerse al menos con 4 meses de  anticipación  (antes  de  contratar  el  salón  de recepción)  a modo  de  tener  tiempo  suficiente  para  la preparación  e  instrucción.  Favor  llamar  a  la  Rectoría para una cita.  

CONVERCIONES:  RCIA El  Rito  de  Iniciacion  Cristiana  para  Adultos  comienza cada  año  en  septiembre,  llega  a  su  cúspide  con  el Bautismo o  recepción en  la  Iglesia en  la Vigilia Pascual (Sábado Santo), y termina en la fiesta de Pentecostes.
