Cerebral palsy is an umbrella term used by doctors to refer to a set of neurological conditions that affect a child's movement, posture and co-ordination.

Neurological conditions affect the brain and nervous system.

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the brain before, during or soon after birth.

The most common cause of cerebral palsy is something that damages the brain while the baby is in the womb, thought to account for around 80% of cases.

Known possible causes of cerebral palsy include:

• infection in early pregnancy

• premature birth

• cerebral haemorrhage (bleeds in the baby’s brain)

• genetic factors

• oxygen starvation to baby’s brain during delivery

Sometimes the cause of the cerebral palsy is never discovered.

Children with cerebral palsy may suffer problems with mobility, posture and co-ordination, speech and language, vision, and may suffer from learning difficulties and epilepsy. The effects can range from minor disabilities to those at the profound end of the spectrum who require 24 hour care.

Accessing services that can help is important. The Cerebral Palsy A to Z has been produced by Digby Brown Solicitors to help direct you to some of these services. Digby Brown have seven offices in Scotland and have a specialist team who deal only with cases of medical negligence. This team has particular experience and legal expertise in helping parents of children with cerebral palsy who believe this was caused as a result of negligence during birth.

We hope you find this Directory helpful and informative about the services that are available to you.

Digby Brown SolicitorsOffices throughout Scotland including: Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Kirkcaldy and Ayr

Tel: 0333 200 5925 Email: [email protected] Website: www.digbybrown.co.uk

How to Access: Direct.

Summary of Services:Digby Brown is Scotland’s largest personal injury practice. Our expertise in personal injury law, particularly in the fields of clinical negligence and serious injury, is widely acknowledged. Our clinical negligence department has particular experience and legal expertise helping parents of children with cerebral palsy who believe this was caused as a result of negligence during birth.

Fortunately, most medical treatment is carried out well. However, there are occasions when treatment falls below the appropriate standard and can result in injury, such as cerebral palsy. If something goes wrong during the birth of a child then you are rightly entitled to find out what happened, why it happened and whether the negligence of a health professional was the cause of the cerebral palsy. Making a claim against a health professional is a big step. It is important to be fully informed before embarking on such a claim. Victims of medical accidents require highly specialised legal advice in what is a complex area of law. We understand that even approaching a solicitor can be a difficult process and we offer a caring service which recognises your individual needs.

Our specialist Clinical Negligence Department has for many years helped families of children with cerebral palsy, who wish to find answers and where appropriate pursue rightful and fair compensation.

Digby Brown is the only firm in Scotland to be ranked band one and tier one in both Chambers Guide to the UK Legal Profession and the Legal 500. With offices throughout Scotland, we believe we can help when it really matters.
