As a sign of reverence and to fulfill the commandment that we do not act towards God the way we do towards

idols, Judaism has developed the mitzvah known as “shaimos”, literally meaning names. This mitzvah stipulates that we do not erase or otherwise destroy the written name of God. Shaimos only applies to God’s Hebrew names and therefore one need not write God as “G-d”. Many include within the category of words that cannot be destroyed entire biblical verses, even if they do not contain the name of God.

As a result of this mitzvah, synagogues often accumulate old siddurim, chumashim, and study sheets that cannot be thrown away. Periodically, these shaimos are buried. Recently, and with thanks from the clergy, our member, Bob ziedenberg, presided over the burial of 129 boxes of shaimos from Adath Israel Congregation. Thank you goes to Frank Aguiar as well for loading and transporting the boxes.

Parashat Shelach lechaThe events of this parashah are crucial in the Torah narrative, explaining why it took 40 years for the people to reach the Promised Land. We already have seen certain undesirable character traits emerge among the Israelites: grumbling about food and living conditions, a nostalgia for the less complicated life of being a slave in Egypt. These will culminate in a massive failure of nerve when God summons Israel to attack and conquer the Promised Land. The people do not believe in their own ability to do that, and by implication do not believe in God's ability to ensure their victory. As a result, God decrees 40 years of wandering, to end only when the generation that left Egypt has died off.
