Osteoporosis is a condition of thin bones and increases the risk of breaking a bone. Our bones are constantly replenishing themselves, but as we age, we lose more bone than we make. Because of this, bones become thin and fragile. After menopause, women lose bone even more quickly, and medications like prednisone and anti-epileptics, can further increase this loss in both men and women. People with calcium kidney stones are at particular risk for losing calcium from their bones which increases their risk of osteoporosis and fracture. Osteoporosis is a silent condition like high blood pressure. You usually don’t feel osteoporosis unless you fracture a bone, but if this occurs, your risk of another fracture can be 20 times greater. The only outward signs of osteoporosis, other than a known fracture, can be height loss or a curvature of the spine. Surprisingly, 2/3 of back or spine fractures in women are painless, or blamed on other conditions rather than an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture. Osteoporosis Diagnosis Thin bones are fragile, and more likely to fracture. Over 28 million people, especially women, are at risk for fracture due to fragile bones or osteoporosis. Osteoporosis and fractures are major health problems for millions of people. In the United States, half of women and one-fourth of men 50 years or older will suffer an osteoporosis related fracture within their lifetime.

Osteoporosis Diagnosis

Thin bones are fragile, and more likely to fracture. Over 28 million people, especially women, are at risk

for fracture due to fragile bones or osteoporosis. Most people with osteoporosis do not know they have

the disease, only 9% of women with osteoporosis are diagnosed and on treatment. One fourth of all hip

fractures are in men. Anyone with a past fracture after 40 years old, especially after a hip fracture, needs

testing with a Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Test which is the best predictor of fracture risk.

Osteoporosis Prevention

Prevention of osteoporosis is very important. Although there are treatments for osteoporosis, optimal

skeletal health and strengthening your bones begins with prevention. A comprehensive osteoporosis

prevention program includes:

Balanced diet rich in calcium & vitamin D

 Weight-bearing exercise

A healthy lifestyle with no smoking and limited alcohol intake

 Bone density or BMD testing

 Medical therapy when appropriate

(more on bone health on the next page)

Previous Fracture after age 40 Caucasian or Asian

 Steroid Medication Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Over 65 Years of Age Family History of Osteoporosis Hip Fractures

Early Menopause in Women (before age 45) Low Calcium Intake, Malabsorption

Testosterone Deficiency in Men Eating Disorders

Calcium Kidney Stones Sedentary Lifestyle, Immobility

 Smoking Weight Loss

Osteoporosis Risk Factors Include:

What is Euflexxa? Euflexxa is a newer synthetic product for knee joints. Many of us have heard of Synvisc. Euflexxa is simply the synthetic version, since some folks cannot use Synvisc because it has rooster comb in it and allergies can be affected. So in essence it is similar to healthy human synovial fluid, a substance that lubricates the joints.

It is injected directly into the knee joint to restore the cushioning and lubricating properties of normal joint fluid. It is indicated for treatment of knee pain due to osteoarthritis of the knee in patients who have failed to respond to more conservative non-pharmacologic therapy and to simple analgesics (e.g. acetaminophen). Approved by the FDA in 2004., the Euflexxa injection is typically given weekly for 3 weeks.

“DJ”, Danny Jones, PA-C, already does steroid knee injections here at the Odessa Clinic. He plans to receive specialized training in order to be able to provide this added service to our patients.

Bone Densitometry: Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Testing

Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DXA) is the best way to measure bone density

since it measures BMD at the hip and the spine, two locations at risk for

osteoporotic fracture. The DXA

is painless and non-invasive and

takes only minutes to complete.

When having a DXA-BMD please

wear workout-like or sweat type

clothing that DOES NOT have zip-

pers, hooks, grommets or anything

metal on them (also no bras with un-

derwires, watches bracelets, necklac-

es, etc.) Metal interferes with the

DXA results.

Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center offers this state-of-the-art DXA

testing with excellent precision and at the most convenient location,

right here in Odessa, WA!

NEW Scope Equipment

Dr. Deanna Davidson, DO, Board Certified in General Surgery has helped Odessa Memorial

Healthcare Center select state of the art endoscopic equipment. Endoscopic equipment is

used for colonoscopies and upper endoscopic studies. The service of colonoscopy identifies and

removes pre-cancerous polyps, thereby being the only screening procedure that prevents colon

cancer. Colon cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, simply by receiving a colonosco-

py.

Generally, the recommendation is to have the first screening at the age

of 50, and earlier for patients with a family history of colon cancer.

There are often no symptoms, so routine screening is essential to pre-

vention. Rectal bleeding may be an indicator of colon cancer and

should be investigated promptly by your physician.

The new equipment at Odessa Memorial will provide higher quality

images thereby allowing Dr. Davidson to more clearly detect abnor-

malities. As a result of the Affordable Care Act, screening colonosco-

pies are now generally covered by insurance after age 50.

Dr. Davidson performs colonoscopies, gastroscopies and related procedures at OMHC monthly.

She holds office hours weekly on Wednesdays at the Odessa Rural Health Clinic and is happy to

see patients with surgical needs to include symptoms such as abnormal menstrual bleeding, gas-

trointestinal distress (abdominal pain, nausea, acid reflux, etc.), gynecologic disorder

(abdominal bleeding, pain, hormonal issues), breast masses & cancer, and skin legions or can-

cer. Dr. Davidson has a background in general surgery and has been in the area for nearly 20

years. She is committed to caring for the residents of Lincoln County.

Flu Vaccine

Thank You To: The entire staff at OMHCThank You To: The entire staff at OMHCThank You To: The entire staff at OMHCThank You To: The entire staff at OMHC

According to Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the flu vaccine is a safe vaccine and is the best way to protect you and your family from flu. It protects almost two thirds of the time. So while we would love it to be 100 percent or 95 percent like many of the other vaccines, it is a lot better than simply hoping we won’t get the flu. So if you get the vaccine, your risk of getting the flu is cut down by more than 60 percent. It is a safe and effective vaccine. All people over 6 months of age should get the flu vaccine, even pregnant women.

The Odessa Clinic has several forms of the vaccine available for children and adults. We have the nasal for ages 2-49, Thimerosal-free for a select population, Flu Blok for those with known egg allergies, and vaccine for everyone over the age of 6 months. Most insurance companies, including Medicare, pay for flu and pneumococcal vaccine. Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for everyone over age 65 (one time-not annually) and for younger folks with specific indications to protect against pneumonia.

I would like to extend my gratitude to the entire OMHC team for the love and care they showed my

dad, Ronald Frederick, during his many visits to our healthcare facility during the last few years, and

more importantly, the last few months of his life. Speaking from a patient’s family perspective, and not

an employee, I hope this community realizes the gem we have among us and that without it, our lives

especially that of my family, would have been immensely different. From all of the clinic visits, lab

draws, x-rays, physical therapy, ambulance rides, emergency room visits and hospital stays, he was treat-

ed with dignity, respect and compassion by everyone involved and always in a timely manner. Only in

a small community could someone get that kind of treatment each and every time he needed it. If our

family not had the availability of this great network of care, I’d hate to think of how stressful it would

have been for all of us involved, trying to meet all of dad’s needs elsewhere. Again, THANK YOU

OMHC, you rock!

-Angie Frederick on behalf of Ron Frederick’s entire family

Botox

Botox is used not only for cosmetic purposes, but it also has some medicinal properties for specific health issues. Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxin A) is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow's feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows and moderate to severe crow’s feet lines in adults. This is not typically paid by insurance companies when strictly used for cosmetic purposes.

Medical uses for Botox are: bladder dysfunction, chronic migraine, upper limb spasticity, cer-vical dystonia, primary axillary hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), blepharospam and strabismus.

DJ Jones PA-C, at the Odessa Clinic, is experienced in using Botox for cosmetic purposes and is excited to be able to use it for medical purposes, as appropriate to our scope of service right here in Odessa!
