What did we learn about our-selves this summer? We learned tocare more for our neighbors as weassisted each other battle hugegrass and forest fires in several dif-ferent regions of our state, helpthem find needed hay or pasture,or assisted in hauling water to live-stock. We learned that each of uswill make the necessary decisionsto survive this year’s drought, andwe learned that we must continueto pray for needed moisture thatwill replenish our way of life andrenew our hearts. If we do not re-ceive much moisture this winter ornext spring… well I don’t evencare to think about the choiceswe’ll have to make in 2013. Let’skeep praying for that moisture.
Until next time...

2012…The summer to remem-ber, or maybe forget. It has been asummer that many of us will neverforget…intense and relentlesswind, unending triple digit tem-peratures that seared our liveli-hoods and our souls, sapping thedetermined spirit of agriculturalproducers (for cattlemen and cropproducers alike). When we did seestorm clouds gather, often theybrought only dry lightening andsubsequent fires, or damaging hail.
Even with one of the warmest12 month eras on record, the onlycasualty for our Association activi-ties was our Annual tour. The par-ticipants, in an extremely closevote, chose to not hold the tour thisyear even though they knew thetour would move onto the North-east region of Nebraska in 2013, ifit wasn’t held in 2012. While itwas an extremely emotional anddifficult decision, it turned out tobe the correct call as three fairlylarge fires scorched portions of thetour area in late August, just twoweeks prior to the scheduled tourdate. My heartfelt thanks goes outto my board of directors for theirguidance on this issue. A decisionto cancel an activity such as thetour not only affects those mem-bers participating on the tour, it af-fects the Association as a whole.
Despite this year’s drought, ex-hibits at this year’s State Fair wereup nearly 10% from a year ago,and our tent at Husker HarvestDays was full (eight exhibitors) forthe first time since my employ-ment as Secretary/Manager beganin 2008. Again the weather af-fected Husker Harvest Days aswind was a factor in the enjoymentof the exhibitors on Monday (setupday) and the first two days of theexhibit. In fact, the dry summercoupled with the strong Northeastwinds on the second day of theevent filled a portion of our tentwith corn husks and dirt (not justdust) from the field North of ourexhibit. From the comments of ex-hibitors who have been at this

Dear Cattle Producers,By: Randy Pettera, NAA President & Jud Hoffschneider, NJAA President
As I am writing, Fall has justbegun and it is still dry, butthankfully not over 100 degrees. The other day I felt somethingstrange hit me in the head.Whoa, it was a drop of rain! But, I think it was the onlydrop.
Harvest is in full swing, hayis in high demand and in shortsupply. I hate to see our feedbill this winter. Luckily, cattleprices are holding strong.
In September we attendedHusker Harvest Days. We hada great turn out for 3 days. Hotthe first day, blew away the 2ndday, and then a beautiful lastday. Eight full pens of Anguscattle! Set up time was a breezewith all the extra help. Nice tohave a lot of younger peoplegetting involved in the Angusbusiness, but we would be lostwithout the crucial expertise of“Dutch” Dethlefs to guide us.
While at HHD we spokewith the first organizers of theNAA display many years ago.The farm show at that time did-n’t think livestock needed to beincluded. Boy did our associa-tion help prove them wrong. Itis amazing how things havechanged. Take a tour of theNorthwest area of HHD’ssometime and see all thetremendous livestock displays. It even amazes me to see howall the other breeds havechanged. They are now“BLACK” and add the term“ANGUS” to their name. Eventhey know where GOOD BEEFcomes from!
Our association annual
meeting and banquet is set forDecember 1,2012. and will beheld in Kearney. My year serv-ing as President has been won-derful. Also, quite a learningexperience. If you love theangus breed and are not a mem-ber of the Nebraska Angus As-sociation, “join” and becomeinvolved. The rewards are toonumerous to mention.
Randy Pettera
It has been a hot dry sum-mer and hopefully fall willleave all of Nebraska in a bettercondition. There has been a lotgoing on for the Angus Juniorsthis summer. July found many of us in

This year we also had acandidate running for the Juniorboard ,Melissa Keyes. We werewell represented in the variousshows and contests. As we re-turned, we wished we couldhave brought back some of therain Louisville received duringour stay.
This fall will slow downsome for Angus Juniors, withthe start of school. We had ameeting at the Nebraska StateFair in Grand Island. It wasgreat to see all of the Juniorsand see some good Angus Cat-tle. A good crossbreeding program takessome background in genetics, a bigenough herd and land base, good bull sup-pliers and time to figure all that out. Pro-ducers looking for a simpler route toheterosis often opt to use a composite bull.
“In order for a crossbreeding opera-tion to maximize heterosis, it takes a lot ofdifferent pasture, a lot of management, which because of size and time a lot ofpeople can’t devote to it,” says JaroldCallahan, president of Express Ranches,Yukon, Okla. “You basically have to havedifferent herds within your herd.”
So the composite bull market wasborn, where breeding stock is billed as al-ready having that built-in hybrid vigor.
“Implementing crossbreeding can besomewhat daunting,” says Nevil Speer,Western Kentucky University animal sci-entist. “Many operations would ratherforgo such effort if production can bemaintained while also ensuring relativeabsence of problems. As a result, produc-ers are often encouraged to utilize compos-ite bulls as a simplified means to boostheterosis and subsequent production.”
But Callahan says it’s not always a“quick fix.” Express has sold hundreds ofLimousin-Angus crosses over the years, but recently decreased the number of com-
posites (F1) offered on an annual basis.
“A lot of people we sent F1 bulls towere very disappointed because of genesegregation and what was being transmit-ted from each parent,” he says. “Someprogeny of these bulls really favored traitsof one breed and some favored traits of theother, some looked Angus and somelooked Continental. You ended up with aset of calves that were not only visuallydifferent, but a lot different in terms of out-come and how you needed to managethem.”
Geneticist Bob Weaber, Kansas StateUniversity, says that’s partly because whatworks on average for the whole calf cropvaries among individuals. That may shiftthe balance of traits toward one breed orthe other.
“Even though the F2s [compositeprogeny] have half of their genetic mate-rial from each breed on average, some re-pairing of chromosomes from the samebreed occurs,” he says. “When we make anF2 we see a decrease in heterosis, becauseon average one-half of the animals’ chro-mosomes consist of pairings from the samebreed of founder.”
Data from the U.S. Meat Animal Re-search Center (MARC) suggests that theprogeny from matings of F1 parents are nomore variable than either of their purebredfounder breeds for traits like weaningweight or yearling weight. However, fortraits controlled by a single gene, theseprogeny are noticeably less consistent thanthe F1 parents, especially if the founder
breeders were very divergent, Weabersays.
Speer says that makes it hard to meas-ure how much productivity they shouldadd to the herd: “In many instances com-posite bulls actually represent backcross-ing and may reduce heterosis potentialversus using a breed that serves as a totaloutcross.”
From a seedstock producer’s perspec-tive, it can be much more difficult to createa reliable composite compared to a pure-bred bull.
“I have 27 years of objective breedingdecisions that harness the power of theAAA [American Angus Association] data-base,” says Brian McCulloh, Viroqua, Wis.The registered breeder, who makes 350 ofthose decisions each spring, says the pre-dictive power is strengthened by the broaduse of artificial insemination (AI) by Asso-ciation members, who submit within-herddata that ties all animals together.
“Simply put, I am not comfortable ‘ex-perimenting’ with data from other breedsto create a composite bull for our commer-cial customers. I have more confidencepredicting the outcome of our pure lineAngus bulls,” he says.
The Angus database updates weeklywith more than 20 million performancemeasures and 17 million pedigrees. Thatdata volume explains why, after dabblingin the composite market to try offering

customers an outcross, McCulloh abruptlystopped.
Using the MARC across-breed EPD(expected progeny difference) adjustmentfactors help in comparing data, Callahansays. “But there is still a little bit of an un-known as to where that animal is going tocome out.
“The purebred cattle evaluations giveyou better insight in terms of predictabilityof individuals and their offspring,” hesays. Genomically-enhanced EPDs honethat ability. “You can make more progress– because you have greater access to per-formance information – than you can inmost crossbreeding operations, unlessthey’re extremely well designed.”
To date, the DNA technology can onlyeffectively sort out straightbred popula-tions, he adds.
“That precludes it from being usefulin composites and crossbreds,” Callahansays.
When selecting hybrids, commercialproducers may face another challenge:“There’s an increasing need to purchasebulls in volume that provide both unifor-mity of calf crop and deliver on the vari-ous traits of interest,” Speer says.“Commercial bull buyers have access tolarger sale offerings when shopping forAngus bulls compared to other breeds.”
Purchasing siblings in bulk is routine.
“That opportunity doesn’t exist whenconsidering composite bulls,” he says.
Callahan doesn’t dispute the advan-tages of genetic diversity, but says he’sconcerned with those who are “crossbreed-ing just for the sake of crossbreeding.”
His typical composite customer is in aterminal program, purchasing rather thanraising replacement heifers. Otherwise, many have switched back to straightbreds.
“They really enjoy the uniformity oftheir calf crop and the predictability intheir genetics,” he says. There are noshortcuts to that.
