In the book, authors Russand Evans provide an introduction toand history of the basic safe form, andthey reveal how safes provide insightsabout the people who produced andused them. ey also identify typesand regional variations of safe formsand tin patterns, documentsignificant new cabinet shops andregional schools of production, andexplore the interactions of artisans. At 136 pages, Opening the Door isrichly illustrated with images ofsafes and their distinctive tinpatterns. e book is nowavailable for purchase in theMuseum Store for $44.95.

What is Watercolor?

Watercolor is kind of like what it sounds like: color in water. If you’veused paints that come in the little trays with the lids, you’ve probablymade a watercolor painting! Technically, it’s pigment (color) in water, with another material that holds it all together. It comes in small cubes orcircles of color, but you can also buy it in tubes and even in pencil form.Try painting the coloring page below with watercolors!

See this painting at the MSV! Made by Virginia Watercolor Society artist FarhanaHussain, the painting is called Bow to the Emperor.

Have you ever made a painting using paints in trays like the one in this picture?
