JD BurdgeOctober Artist of The Month
By Gary [email protected]
“I am originally from San Diego, California,” related JD Burdge, the Fort Myers Beach Library Artist of the Month for October. “In my mid-20s, I relocated to the Dallas area, then in 1998 moved to Fort Myers Beach. When I came here, everything really came
together for me, so it feels like a dream come true!” JD calls his introduction to art “a sideways story! When I was very young, my uncle took me to the Natural History Museum in Los Angeles, that most people know of as being surrounded by the La Brea Tar Pits. I was so taken with the prehistoric skeletons that at five years old, I wanted to become a paleontologist, so I drew those! Though I eventually outgrew my dinosaur stage, art became my passion. My Mom and Dad had artistic abilities, as did my grandmother on my Dad’s side and several cousins, and my uncle was a professional artist, so it is in my DNA.” As JD contemplated his style, he laughed and admitted, “I don’t really have one! I am a commercial artist, so when some-one commissions me for a mural, I try to do it in the style they want.” When describing what FMB Library visitors will experience during his October exhibit, JD exclaimed, “very big explosive works! I am a muralist so I work big, with most pieces being 4 to 5 feet, with sever-al smaller ones to fill in the spaces. Most will feature tropical scenes, using combinations of airbrush and paint brushes. I hope those who visit enjoy my stuff, and all artists like the exposure a venue like the Fort Myers Beach Library affords, so if you are looking for some
sort of existential experience beyond that, it is just that simple.” Perhaps the mural of JD’s that most Fort Myers Beach residents and visitors see most is within the Library’s own walls, or to put it more accurately, its elevator shaft! “When the Library underwent its significant expansion several years back, its late Direc-tor, Dr. Leroy Hommerding, commissioned me to do the artwork in its elevator shaft that you see through the elevator bubble glass walls as you ride from the lobby to third floor. It was quite a challenge, as I had to finish it in just six week, but when I was done, Dr. Hom-merding was really happy with it and so am I!” To view JD’s exhibit, visit the FMB Library’s 3rd Floor Gallery anytime through the month of October. The Library is at 2755 Estero Boulevard, with hours Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and closed Sundays and Holidays, including Columbus Day on Monday, October 14. To speak with JD personally, attend his “Meet the Artist Reception” on Tuesday, Oc-tober 8, from 3 to 4 p.m. To see more of JD’s artwork, visit jdburdgemuralartist.shutterfly.com; to speak with him, call 239-463-0465. For Library information, call 239-765-8162 or see www.FMB.lib.fl.us.

Fort Myers Beach will “Restore the Roar” with the return of powerboat races just off our Gulf Coast. Roar Offshore events are from Thursday, October 10, through Race Day on Saturday, October 12! The Roar Offshore returns offshore powerboat racing to Fort Myers Beach for the first time since 2006, with the Offshore Pow-erboat Association’s (OPA) 2019 National Championship, as well as the final stop of the six-race American Power Boat Association Offshore Championship Series produced by OPA and Powerboat P-1. Fort Myers Beach previously was a stop on the American Power Boat Association offshore powerboat races from the 1980’s through 2006. Powerboat teams will arrive Mon-day– Wednesday, October 7 - 9. Salty Sam’s Marina, 2500 Main St. on San Carlos Island, will host the Race Village, Dry and Wet Pits. On Thursday, October 10, the Salty Sam’s Race Village opens at 10 a.m., a Race Boat Parade starting at 5:45 p.m. will bring boats from Salty Sam’s to Old San Carlos Blvd for a 6-10 p.m. street party. Friday will see race teams testing and tuning their boats and a 4-9 p.m. party at the Race Village. Satur-day is Race Day with races from 11 a.m. to 4:30pm. See the complete schedule in this is-sue. (Schedule reflects information available at press time.) See roaroffshore.com for up-dates. With SunStream Hotels & Resort as title sponsor, the start and finish line for
Roar Offshore races will be offshore of Dia-mondHead Resort, 2000 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach. The race course, with eight buoy turns, including an unusual left turn, will take the power boats as far south as Junk-anoo’s (3040 Estero Blvd) and as far north as the Best Western Plus Resort (684 Estero Blvd.). VIP tickets are available at several race sponsors, but those who miss out on the VIP tickets can still find good views on the beach. Scott Colton, one of the five own-ers of the legendary “Miss Geico” powerboat team, provided his advice on the best loca-tion to watch the races. “If you set up on the beach, in the middle of the course, you will see powerboats going all out, but not much
passing. If you want the fastest speeds pos-sible, because of the way we design the rac-ing boats, that is into the wind and not with it, as most might think. Passing generally takes place in the turns, when the boats decelerate and pick their own lanes, so if one boat goes inside, the other goes outside, as we like clean water, to stay away from each other’s rooster tails, then they speed right back up. While we obviously don’t like to dwell on this, if you want to see a crash, the turns are the place to be. As for if you get a better vantage point on the beach or a boat, I am a lifelong boater, but Fort Myers Beach is an island, and an island is a great place to watch a power-boat race!”

Island Musician Bill Zink A Thumb-Pickin’ Good Time
By Gary [email protected]
“I was 9-years-old and saw a cou-ple guitarists on local television, thought that was neat, and found myself drawn to it,” said popular island performer Bill Zink. “I’d like to tell you it was from watching The Beatles, but mine is a simple origin!” He came to Southwest Florida 14 years ago, from Rhode Island, “where I was a welder, electrician, then supervisor on nucle-ar submarines. I did that for 23 years, raising my family, but my wife hated the cold, so we came down and took a leap of faith into mu-sic. Within the first month, I had a couple of steady gigs, and it took off from there.” Bill does not have one standard style. “Here you have to play everything, like Country and Island and Rock-&-Roll, but my favorite is surf-guitar, made famous by Duane Eddy and Dick Dale.” Requests range all over the board, “but my favorite is ‘Pipeline’ by Dick Dale. I have my own rendition that is very quick, and in the middle, I throw in some of ‘The Green Hornet.” Check that out on YouTube, from a performance from about 10 years ago, when my hair was darker!”
Known as both Bill Zink and Smokin’ Bill, he performs half the time solo, and the rest with daughter Meagan Rose as “Meagan Rose & Papa.” “We started perform-ing together in Rhode Island when she was a teenager, and she came down about a year after I did to get into music. Our shows are completely different from my solo stuff, so that keeps everything fresh for me.” To catch him on the beach this month, Bill is at the PierSide Grill & Famous Blowfish Bar Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Nervous Nellie’s on Tuesdays & Fridays from 6-9 p.m. He and Meagan Rose are at The Outrigger on Sat-urdays from 2 to 5 p.m. For more information about Bill, visit smokinbill.com or Facebook at smokin-billzink. What makes Bill unique? “I fin-ger-pick guitar, using a thumbpick, like Tom-my Emmanuel and Jerry Reed, rather than just strumming away like everyone else.” Bill is also known for something else – bread! “My hobby is baking bread, like sourdough and bagels, and I pass them out to bartenders and waitresses and audience members and people love it!”
For Bill, the best aspect of playing on the beach “is knowing how much people appreciate me, whether they are dancing or sitting back tapping their fingers and toes. Another wonderful part is during season, when snowbirds return, as it becomes a big reunion!”

Roar OffshoreRace Fan Information
The Fort Myers Beach community welcomes Roar Offshore Race Fans and hopes everyone enjoys a fun weekend on our Island. Here’s some information that might help Island visitors.
PARKING
Roar Offshore organizers have arranged for parking at sev-eral off-Island locations, with shuttle buses bringing fans to the Race Village at Salty Sam’s Marina on San Carlos Island and over the bridge to Fort Myers Beach. Parking will be available at Century Link Stadium (14100 Six Mile Cypress Parkway, Fort Myers), LaMotta’s Restaurant (15660 San Carlos Blvd, Fort Myers) and Peace Lutheran Church (15840 Mc-Gregor Blvd, Fort Myers), according to a September 16 Roar Offshore press release. Exact times, shuttle details and drop off points were not available at press time. See roaroffshore.com for parking details. Ex-pect parking lots on the beach to be full. Park only in marked spaces. “Creative” parking will be ticketed. The Beach Park & Ride lot, behind Wal-mart at the corner of Summerlin Square Drive and Pine Ridge Road, offers the opportu-nity to park your vehicle and ride LeeTran trolleys to the beach. The trolley also travels the length of the beach, from Bowditch Point Park
to Lovers Key State Park. Cost is 75 cents/ride or $2 for a day pass. rideLeeTran.com
RACE COURSE
The Race Course Start & Finish Line is off of DiamondHead Beach Resort at 2000 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach. Several race sponsors are selling VIP tickets for preferred viewing spots in their establishments. If you don’t nab one of those, the beach anywhere between 600 and 3500 Estero Blvd should offer a good view of the race. If you are going to watch the race from a boat, please follow instructions and remain in the boat viewing area.
BEACH
Enjoy our beach as you watch the races! Fort Myers Beach is well known as a family-friendly beach due to the wide, white sand beach and shallow water. A few tips for enjoying our beach:
• If you dig any holes, please fill them in. • Watch out for marked sea turtle nests. Sea Turtle nesting season continues through October 31. If you are renting on the beach, close the drapes after sunset and if exterior lights are not Amber LED bulbs, turn them off to avoid confusing newly hatched turtles.• Do not take any live shells from the beach. • Leashed dogs are welcome on the beach, except for the far southern end of the Island in the Little Estero Critical Wildlife Area. • There are trash & recycling cans at each beach access point. Please bring a trash bag with you and pack up your trash, includ-ing food, and dispose of it.• Plastic straws are banned on Fort Myers Beach. Local business-es use paper straws.

GENERAL COMMENTS:On the Beach October is a traditionally a month for pirates. I don’t mean all of you who make this island your home. We call it a blue-col-lar beach, but what we really mean is we’re a just a bunch of new age pirates. No, I’m talking about the past invasion of the Pirates of the Caribbean this month. A convergence of pirates on little islands in the sub-tropics. Cool. There’s got to be mysticism permeating the air all over the place! I have no idea what will be predicted. This month I’m channeling individual pirates and passing on their messages to you.
LIBRA (SEPT 23 - OCT 23)Pirate Muse: Kazimierz Lux‘Dis ist’ a fine month for fortunes and treasures galore! Ya-ya. Und plenty of potatoes soup and dumplings and chunks of meat. No trea-sure is worth as much as it is on a full stomach! So we eat first, and then hunt for riches and gold. Gold, like a Golden Margarita. And as we move boldly forth on our adventure, the wind in our faces and our chests thrust out like the daredevils we are, we will remember that all of it can be bought and sold. Everything, but the adventure!
SCORPIO (OCT 24 - NOV 21)Pirate Muse: Bill JohnstonYour goat roping days are over. Ain’t no gator wrestling neither. Yes, you can snap a few snakes and gig a mess of frogs, but that’s it! This is a month for no gluttony nor sloth. You may be asking yourself where is this pirate going with this? Well, we’re going downto the 10,000 Islands where a person can get lost and never be found again. It’s also the site of the oldest, ancient settlement on the conti-nent. I guess you know where all those people came from, don’t you? Come on - let’s check it out!
SAGITTARIUS (NOV 22 - DEC 21)Pirate Muse: José Gaspar (Gasparilla)Imagine being known and loved by most, and drawn in books to quick-en the mind of youngsters … only to find out you may not even have ever existed. Kind of Gasparillatating, isn’t it? (Insert groan here) But consider this - we can’t see the Wi-Fi showing our movies, but there it is on the screen right in front of you. So, imagined or real isn’t a case of reality, per se. Or even perceived reality. Right now this farcical horoscope is right here in front of you, real. But it doesn’t make sense, does it? Now that’s reality. And you’re in it up to your knees.
CAPRICORN (DEC 22 - JAN 19)Pirate Muse: Hezekiah FrithI say, wouldn’t a spot of tea be just perfect for this channeling of wis-dom? Pirating is a messy business, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do it in a civilized manner. Come on, lift the pinky finger. You see, this month there will be no ‘sporkulating’ or triangulating forces. We must suppress the urge to strangulate or grind our teeth. This is the month of the “Big Breath” - that breath that restores wisdom and sanity. This will lead you to enlightenment. Should you find yourself there be sure to send me a postcard (I’ve never been).
AQUARIUS (JAN 20 - FEB 18)Pirate Muse: Roberto CofresíI’ve got to tell you, Cheeco - you’ve got to re-adjust your cosmic vibe down to an asteroid-sized mote of titanium. The intellectual properties of your aura-vatic vibrational patterns far exceed the norm, established by NormPsych.Inc in a recent study of mollusks. That having been said, and to further the course of history one step at a time, glances into the mists of happiness predict that the next moon cycle will bring you booty and treasure with the rising tides. Yours is the path to new things and peppy, fizzy drinks at sunset.
PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 - MARCH 20)Pirate Muse: Renato BelucheDon’t cry for me, beach-a-rina. Sands may come, and sands may go, but the tides will dash upon the rocks of your imagination and spew fogs full of creativity and fun. All for you. In order for you to take advan-
tage of this auspicious month you’ll need to (1) stayawake, and (2) pay attention. Other than that you’ve just got to stay loose and party with pirates. Oh, and sleep in the morning after.
ARIES (MARCH 21 - APRIL 19)Pirate Muse: Richard WorleyMany original thoughts, many random thoughts, many what-the-heck-was-that thoughts this month. Ever have a thought pop up, and you’re like, “Where the heck did that come from?” It’s kinda like a Lotus Amer-icana driving on Estero Blvd. These thoughts are like seagulls search-ing for the kid with french fries on the beach. They swoop down from outta nowhere and snatch normalcy right out of your hand. Just be sure it doesn’t take a finger while it’s there.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 - MAY 20)Pirate: Diabolito (Little Devil)Like the annoying mosquito buzzing around your ear in the night you’ll feel the need to swat at insinuations and irritants this month. The cur dog chasing the fire engine will make you want to kick it to the curb. Resist the urge. All you’ll get in return is a stubbed toe and a whiney dog. Just be glad it’s nothing of any significance. If you ignore them they usually whimper and go away. You’ve got more important things to put your attention on.
GEMINI (MAY 21 - JUNE 21)Pirate: Benjamin HornigoldThere’s no getting around it - this is a month of hats for you (sorry, this pirate had a thing for hats). Hats have big mojo in cosmic astrology. You know when you wake up and look in the mirror and your hair’s a mess? What do you do? You wear a hat or a bandana, of course. Some of us think this is camouflage. And some of us realize this is a misdirector. Your hair in that mirror that morning reflects the state of your mind while you slept. Hats contain the errant chaos of your mind.
CANCER (JUNE 22 - JULY 22)Pirate: Henry Every (Avery)Best to stand in the shade of whatever’s casting shade around you. Someone pointed out to me recently that light traveled in a straight line for 93 million miles only to be stopped and converted to a shadow just before contact with the planet. I had to stop and think about that for a moment before tossing the idea into the trash. Your horoscope predicts you’ll do the same with this prediction. Smart move!
LEO (JULY 23 - AUG 22)Pirate: William CondonCaptaining the Fiery Dragon, I was killed when she caught fire and sank. This should not happen to you this month, if I’m reading the cards correctly. I do see Mound Key … or Mound House … or Mound Cake … whatever, I see a whole pile of something collecting somewhere on the island, and it has to do with you and treasures. Of course, I’m a pi-rate that drowned on my burning ship - I may not be a good influence.
VIRGO (AUG 23 - SEPT 22)Pirate: Jean LafitteThough the eternal waters may flow continually through your life, washing away good and bad, right and wrong, still the ever-existent sea mist will cloud your eyes and fill your lungs with a cloudy noth-ingness that obscures your dreams. Without a doubt a double-edged sword, much like Lafitte in cahoots with Andrew Jackson and Simon Bolivar. This month take one day at a time.
Disclaimer: Okay, look … I had nothing to do with any of this wacki-ness. I was just channeling the words of pirates who sailed the Carib-bean Sea. I mean, come on - they’re pirates! What do they know about astrology? Okay, maybe a little bit to go with the celestial navigation they used to sail. And yes, they were a superstitious lot too. Just re-member - they’re pirates. They don’t even know you.
