Don’t forget to get “LinkedIn” with our chapter IFMA NI Chap-ter Group

“You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.” -- Steve Jobs

If you couldn’t tell already, I tend to write about what is on my mind at the moment. And generally speak-ing it relates to IFMA either directly or indirectly, because if nothing else we’re humans and we deal with a lot of the same issues together. So one way or another, I figure it works out alright. Last month I wrote about a client that cancelled a contract out of nowhere and how upset I was at the way it was handled and that I had been treated like just some schmuck contractor. Oddly enough, just a couple of days ago I got a phone call out of the blue from the facility manager for the main tenant at that building. It turns out that this tenant did not renew their lease at this building this spring and instead decided to move all of their operations back into a building they own a few blocks away. The facility manager for the tenant called the management company to ask them who had been doing the snow plowing at the leased building because it he had always been very happy with the service there as opposed to even their owned building and he wanted to solicit a bid from whoever this company was to plow their owned building. That contractor was obviously me. I met with the facility manager today and we had a great conversation. I don’t know that I have the job yet for sure, but I think we have a very positive start in the process. Again, this new building is not very large. Like the one I lost, it’s not going to be a huge impact on the bottom line one way or another. But it’s the principle of the thing. And in my head, if I am able to get the contract, all will be right with the world. Okay maybe not all…but at least this portion will be. I like when things are right. If you couldn’t already tell, I’m big on principles. I’m big on things happening for the right reasons. I’m big on the good guys winning (which would explain why I’ve always been a Cubs fan even when they couldn’t win a game to save their life – I’m a Cubs fan on principle if nothing else.) I’m big on good things happen-ing to good people and bad things happening to bad people. It’s just the way things are supposed to work. Maybe not in an immediate material sense, but in the bigger picture of life – overall happiness and inner peace. Thus I’m a big proponent “Do good things and good things happen to you,”often referred to as karma. This is the order of my world. It’s what lets me sleep at night. It’s what gets me through bad situations and assures me that no matter how bad things get that they will eventually get better some how some way. I obviously have no idea what form that will take or what I will go through to get there, but I have unwaiv-ering faith that so long as I am a good person and do right by others that it will in one way or another. Maybe one day “better” will be in the form of a Lamborghini. I could find a lot of inner peace with one of them!! I suppose my message here isn’t really related to IFMA in particular so much as it is to life in general. Find something that guides you – that you believe and trust in. Find something that when things go wrong gives you faith that it will get better. Find something that no matter what is going wrong in your life or in the world that you know one way or another will guide you through even if you don’t know how it could possi-bly do so. The world will be a much less complicated place if you do. The phrase that pays: “Do good things.” Laura Ingram President
