Good News Reflection

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 29, 2017

Exodus 22:20-26 Ps 18:2-4, 47, 51

1 Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Matthew 22:34-40

Whole-hearted love This Sunday's Gospel reading reminds us that we cannot love God without loving our-

selves and others, but God must always come first.

When we have difficulty loving God with all our heart, mind and soul all the time, eve-

ry day, every moment, no matter what's going on, it's usually because we're spending

too much time focused on other people and/or on our own plans and wishes.

Yes, we must focus on others in order to love them. And yes we must focus on our own needs so that we can

love others as much as we love ourselves. Our own needs are important and we are responsible for seeing that

our needs get met; otherwise we don't have enough to share with others -- enough energy, enough enthusiasm,

enough kindness, enough patience, etc. Likewise, we shouldn't focus so much on ourselves that we neglect the

needs of others.

So the question then becomes: What are the priorities? In other words: How much time should we spend alone

with God? How much time should we spend nurturing ourselves? How much of our time and needs and wants

should be sacrificed for the sake of others?

Interestingly, we find the right balance only after we put God first and make our relationship with him our

highest priority. This divine friendship is what heals us in our unmet needs. It's what empowers us to love oth-

ers even when they are difficult to love. And we don't have to be alone with God all day to have intimacy with

him.

We love him first and foremost simply by relying on him for success in loving others and ourselves. As long as

we keep turning to him for guidance, healing and strength, we are loving him with all our heart, mind and soul

all the time, every day, every moment, no matter what's going on.

Questions for Personal Reflection: How good are you at setting priorities and keeping God at the top? What puts your priorities out of order?

What can you do to increase God's role in your everyday life?

Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Describe some of the techniques you've used to increase God's priority in your everyday life. How has focusing

on your relationship with God helped you to be more loving to yourself and kinder toward others? © 2017 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources.

30º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Octubre 29, 2017

Éxodo 22, 20-26 Sal 18 (17), 2-4.47.51

1 Tesalonicenses 1, 5c-10 Mateo 22, 34-40

Prayer Corner

Please keep all those who are in the military, or are ill or suffering in your prayers.

For those who are ill or homebound: For Andrei Muñoz R. and for all those struggling with cancer and other illnesses

or upcoming surgeries

We pray for peace throughout our entire world. We remember our family members and friends who are serving in the

military: Michael Pennington, Mike Andre, Alec Ogg

If you would like to add the name of someone who is serving in the military, please call the office.

For the repose of the souls of all the faithful departed:

¿Cuánto tiempo deberíamos dedicar a nutrirnos?

© 2017 Terry Modica, Catholic Digital Resources.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

All Souls Day – Nov 2

O gentle heart of Jesus, ever present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the

poor captive souls of Purgatory, have mercy on them. Be not severe in Your judgements, but let some drops

of Your Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames. And Merciful Savior, send Your angels to conduct

them to a place of refreshment, light and peace.

Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24

hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and

to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this

special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks.

Once again we are partnering with Fish of Albany to help provide holiday food

boxes to our parishioners in need as well as to our community at large. There

are many families in Linn County who do not have enough food each month to

feed their families. Partnering with Fish will help your generous donations do

the most good … we need turkeys, hams, potatoes, veggies, stuffing as well

as any and all canned goods, cereal, crackers, box dinners, etc.

Please bring your groceries to church, or you can leave them at the office,

before Tuesday, November 21. We do have refrigerator and freezer space for

storage.

Thank you in advance for helping not only our families but our community’s

families have a wonderful dinner for Thanksgiving and good food to eat all

month long. God bless!

NOTES FROM THE LITURGIST…

Light is very essential in our lives. It gives us direction, guidance and illumine the darkness in our lives.

The practice of lighting candles is an essential tradition in Catholic Churches. In almost every

Catholic celebration, there is a ritual of lighting candles. As an example, candles are lit during the celebration of the mass and special liturgies. Perpetual candle is lit before or near the tabernacle to signify the presence of the Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to call for reverence on the part of the faithful.

This is the reason why, as of you have noticed or maybe wondering, there are six candles on the altar, yes, it is already permanent on the altar. Below is the explanation for the six candles which I quoted from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (G.I.R.M.)

117. “The altar is to be covered with at least one white cloth. In addition, on or next to the altar are to be placed candlesticks with lighted candles: at least two in any celebration, or even four or six, especially for a Sunday Mass or a Holyday of Obligation, or if the Diocesan Bishop celebrates, then seven candlesticks with lighted candles. Likewise, on the altar or close to it, there is to be a cross adorned with a figure of Christ crucified. The candles and the cross with the figure of Christ crucified may also be carried in the procession at the Entrance. On the altar itself may be placed a Book of the Gospels distinct from the book of other readings, unless it is carried in the Entrance Procession.”

Let us then, bear in mind that as we celebrate our sacred liturgies, our sacraments and our

special prayers, Christ as the source of all Light, shall come to us to be ever present, to strengthen us, to instruct us against the shadow of doubt and darkness.

-ACE TUPASI

Can you help us …

Last Sunday at 12:30 PM a silver Chevrolet 4-door pickup with racks in the bed dropped off numerous bags of trash into our dumpster without permission … we are looking for anyone who may have seen this occur who could help us locate the individuals and put a stop to future occurrences. They were a young man wear-ing a black t-shirt and young woman wearing a white coat and boots. We have security cameras surveying this area but, unfortunately, the truck’s license plate is not legible in the playback.

The monthly cost to the Parish and Soup Kitchen for trash service is quite substantial. We cannot have indi-viduals filling up our dumpster, leaving no room for our own trash. Please help us … call the office and ask for Joni if you have any information about this incident; you can also email her at [email protected].

Thank you in advance for any help you can give!

Prayer Shawl Endorsement St. Mary's has been invited to join in a Christian community effort to give foster children in our area a chance to experience a personal connection of caring during the coming holiday season. Approximately 200 youngsters aging from toddler to elementary age living in area foster homes have been selected to receive baskets containing items that will include hand made articles such as knitted or crocheted hats or scarfs. The Prayer Shawl Ministry will be working in connection with other community resources to achieve this goal and are inviting anyone interested in this effort to join them. Items can be of any pattern and size suitable for youth and yarns need to be washable. Yarns can be provided for this project. We also have small sewing projects (materials provided) to add to these baskets. If you like to sew, here is another oppor-tunity to help. Other handmade items suitable for children infant to elementary school age are wel-comed. Items will need to be finished by one week prior to Christmas and can be left in the Prayer Shawl storage closet located next to the water fountain in the main hallway back entrance doors. If you would like to join in this worthwhile project, contact Carol Hawke at 541-926-2106 for more information in making this a season of hope for the children who are separated from their family during a time when family is so very important to all of us.

Blood Drive Results for October 9th, 2017

With a goal of 39 pints, 49 were collected here on Monday, with the potential of helping 3 people each.

Thank you to the generous people who volunteered to recruit and lend assistance at the event itself.

We are grateful to the donors, because despite all the medical advance, without life-giving blood many

people would not survive.

- American Red Cross

Please join us for Thanksgiving Day Mass at 9 AM to

give thanks to God for everything we have in our lives,

for everything God has given us in the world and to

pray for those who do not have enough to eat or a safe

place to live.

Goal

$54,560.51

Our Tree

Due to safety concerns, our cedar

has to be removed … this is so sad

for the parish since this tree was

planted when we ‘’rose from the

ashes” and our beautiful church

was re-built.

We will place something in that

spot that will be just perfect for

our parish so keep watch!
