Special Thanks giving to the summer school & the hard working staff & kids in the Camp Comet Garden Project. The guidance of Master Gardener Wendy Anderson

helped produce a ton of cabbage, kale, potatoes & everything green to serve at the Soup Kitchen. The folks were so pleased & their comments were mindful of the work involved. “Oh really, from the kids garden, for us, how wonderful of them – tell them we are grateful.” Best of all we’re the ones who remembered making gardens with their parents & being together that way, it was good. Thanks again MS. Wendy & kids for helping to feed the hungry & refreshing good memories of family joy.

Thanksgiving Day Meal is going to be upon us before we know it. The Soup Kitchen will be offering a traditional Thanksgiving Day Luncheon on Thursday, November 23rd from 11:00am - 1:00pm. As you know from previous years, the feast is open to the public & our parishioners. Our guest list swells to as many as 300 or more. We always need additional assistance to make serving, cooking, transferring pans from kitchen to Murphy Hall safely, so that the meal flows without a snag. I will have sign-up sheets for menu items needed, volunteering time & other specific requests, as we get closer. This reminder is just to get on your shopping list & schedule in advance. Thank you & may God Bless you.

The need of heavy winter coats, gloves, hats & snow pants has not been on high request so far this year. We have given layers of extra hoodies, sweatshirts, heavy

socks, to those who only have lighter jackets & walking boots – this has been working so far. There has also been some requests for blankets & tents. Keep our friends in your prayers as we go deeper in the cold dark days & nights of winter. God Bless you.

I had the opportunity to listen to a Soup Kitchen guests explain that in their native language there are different words for the different types of ‘snowflake’ you see during the winter months. The Indigenous peoples notice the conditions in a snowstorm & can, in a word, tell that the snow is sticky or very dry or popcorn like or even a word for todays’ small flakes flickering around like mosquitos in the breeze. It is not just with the single word they use to describe snow conditions; it is also other danger signs they see in the cloud formations, the direction of the winds, the likely change in the temperature & the safety challenges for travelers – hunters, water haulers, children playing out & the like. It amazes us that the words regarding survival & safety are so comprehensive. The elders could actually read the weather & teach the younger generation the language. In some ways, like so much of our blended cultural existence, we have put away the language of our ancestors for the English of our rebirth. I wish I knew more words & phrases of our friends & my own Sicilian roots. Now what we are trying to know is how to speak the language of Love (of God’s Spirit). We are learning to communicate in the universal spirit at each coming together – in our smile & in our hospitality & in a gesture of trust & friendship. We have learned or are learning to be the House of God, which welcomes all the strangers sent by our Lord & to be humble in our differences & accepting of our sameness. We put away fear while recognizing the power of the Spirit of Love & invite the Holy Spirit to dwell within each of us. We will be empowered by Love Himself to work together & we will change the face of the earth. Amen.

Often couples experience a breakdown in their relationship or no longer communicate with each other and don’t know how to change the situation. This program has helped 10’s of 1000’s of couples renew their marriage relationships. It can help you too. Give your spouse and yourself the opportunity to rediscover the person you each married. For information, or to register for the next program beginning with a weekend on October 27th - 28th and 29th, 2017.

Call 907 863-8000 or log onto: http://www.HelpOurMarriage.com

The next Priest Clergy Days will take place November 7th, 8th, 9th and because we have been blessed with five new priests in our diocese, two from India, two from Nigeria, and one from Poland, we want to take the

opportunity to welcome them all in a social setting.

Parishioners from all parishes are invited to join us for Mass at 5:30pm followed by a welcome celebration in the social hall at Sacred Heart Cathedral on Thursday, November 9th. We ask that you bring a potluck dish of your choice to share, and take this opportunity to meet Fathers Kumar, Thomas, Aiden, Alphonsus, and Szymon and give them a warm Fairbanks welcome.

“Let everyone

be subject to the

governing authorities, for there is

no authority except that which

God has established.

The authorities that exist have

been established by

God.” Romans 13:1

Why Be Catholic? Religion vs. Politics The Pharisees attack Jesus on a hotly divisive topic: Roman Rule and Roman Politics. The Pharisees were holy, outwardly. Inwardly Jesus calls them whiten sepulchers, that is, they were dead to the Spirit of God. They were hypocrites! They placed their own human laws above God’s law and of course attacked Roman Rule and their authority. As then as now, so many people are more concerned about the political powers debating and disputing each jot, and tittle of the politics. News reports thrive on these debates and sadly to say most Christians and Catholics are more engaged in the latest political debate than they are in the teachings of the Church

(Read Rom 13:1- 7; CCC 2239 - 40).

The heated debates that we hear concerning the latest issues of course are important; but it is more important that we daily place the Kingdom of God first. Placing God’s Kingdom first teaches us the most important lesson we will every learn: God’s will, will be done! (Is 55:10)

We do not need to be saviors of the church or the government. We are witnesses of the Gospel: Disciples in Mission. That is God’s will. We witness to divine power not political power. God’s divine plan for the salvation of each and every person will be accomplished. Despite the politicians, and the power brokers who try to control the immediate future, we should know that God’s will, will be accomplished. We have to trust and follow his will.

Stewardship! Financial Maturity

Financial maturity is really financial responsibility. Planning your yearly budget creates maturity for we make sure we are paying our debts, loans, and taxes. But before we plan to pay our taxes, we ought to remember the tithe that Jesus instructs us to pay. Of course we render to Caesar what is Caesar’s; but do we render unto God what is God’s? We are forced to pay our taxes by law and legal action if we do not pay them. Yet, Scripture is clear, if we do not “pay” we steal. We give to God what is God’s since there will be consequences (Rom13:5). The consequences are not immediate; but they are real. Financial Maturity for Catholics demands faithful stewardship. We have to render to God and should render to God what belongs to Him first, for if we do not make it a priority, it will be easy to cheat on our charity. Of course, we plan to take all the advantages we can when it comes to paying our federal and state taxes; but we should also take every advantage to give of our time, talent, and treasure to God. He deserves it! He gave it to us as a gift to be used.

All of us who are baptized Are missionary disciples.

We are called To become

A living Gospel in the World!

Loyalty: To Whom?

Our world is fickle. We change as the seasons change and many times we do not even know why we are changing. Yesterday, we thought this was right; today we think this same thing is wrong. We live in a society that has changed allegiances. Our loyalty used to uphold morals and values that are rooted in the Scriptures. Satan makes us question right and wrong. He does not need to prove or disprove good or evil. What he wants us to do is question what is right what is wrong and determine the answer for ourselves, for surely we will confuse the issue: Moral Relativism. Moral Relativism proposes a philosophy that denies objective, realistic, and universal truths based upon ethical, moral and biblical principles. Instead it claims truths are based on social, cultural, historical and most important personal circumstances: a person defines and discovers his or her own self-identity. Taxation is one of those relativistic topics. What do we owe God? Jesus tells us, Render to Caesar what is Caesar’s and then He goes on to say, Render to God what is God’s. This is black and white. Yes, it is obligatory to pay your taxes as St. Paul clarifies for us addressing the Romans who certainly debated Roman Rule:

This is why you also pay taxes, for the authorities are ministers of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. Pay to all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due (Romans 13: 6- 7)

But it is so easy to debate taxes and politics which also includes money, power, and loyalties. Satan enjoys these debates because it focuses our attention on the debate – not on God and not on the truth! We must determine our true loyalty: God or Caesar? Jesus simply teaches us seek first the Kingdom of God and the rest will be given. If we put God first, we don’t have to argue and antagonize over all the worldly concerns. What we need to do and what we ought to do daily is

Give the Lord Glory and Honor. Jesus calls each of by our very own name. He knows us more intimately than we know ourselves that is why He tells us the hairs on our head are numbered (Matt 10:30). That we are worth more than any sparrow who falls to the ground; or that if we know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more so does our heavenly Father give us gifts that will give us everything that we need. Today, we Trust in God and do his will even if it means we

must embrace the cross for that is what Jesus did. That Loyalty!
