We are proud to introduce our 2017-2018 Artists-in-Residence, four emerging artists from across the country selected for this highly-competitive program. During their nine-month residency they will share their unique talents with the Armory community while teaching classes, developing their work in their studios, giving lectures, and participating in outreach, exhibitions, and fundraising programs.

The Armory Art Center’s Artists-in-Residence for 2017-2018 are Andy Denton in sculpture, Nate Ditzler in ceramics, Maria Tritico in jewelry/metalsmithing, and Amber Dawn Tutwiler in drawing, painting, and 2D media.

Andy Denton has been selected for his second year as an artist-in-residence at the Armory. He earned his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from East Carolina University. He is a figurative sculptor whose processes involve casting, welding metal, ceramics, and pottery. You Always Live Again, Andy's solo exhibition at Emerge Gallery

in Greenville, North Carolina, featured large figurative works, functional face-pottery, and small wall reliefs. Denton managed the summer studios at Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan and was an adjunct instructor at Pitt Community College in North Carolina until becoming a self-employed artist. Many cities across the Southeast and Midwest exhibit Andy’s outdoor sculptures. He has twice been awarded the Regional Artist Project Grant for Pitt County.

MEET OUR 2017-2018 ARTISTS -IN-RESIDENCENate Ditzler grew up on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Cultural Anthropology, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He completed a Master of Fine Arts at West Virginia University. His sculptures are featured in public collections including the Hawaii's State Foundation for Culture and the Arts as well as the Mayor’s

Office for Culture and the Arts. Ditzler has artwork in private collections in the U.S., Switzerland, and Canada. He has shown in internationally galleries, juried exhibitions, solo exhibitions, and group shows. Nate Ditzler continues to develop art that explores nuances of the human condition while constantly expanding on his investigations of materials and means of fabrication. He was recently the Ceramic Area Technician and an Adjunct Professor at Marshall University.

Maria Tritico was born and raised outside of Houston, Texas. She received her BFA from Texas State University in photography and in studio art with an emphasis in metals/jewelry before receiving her masters of art in art therapy at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Maria works predominately in jewelry and sculpture using the implied lines in

nature and the implied patters in architecture to create abstract geometric-based “mini stories.” Maria exhibits in local and national art shows and has worked in venues ranging from assisted living/skilled nursing care, youth camps, adult classes, and incarceration. Maria is on the Board of Sa Voix-Haiti, a secular non-profit that empowers young women transitioning out of orphan care through mentoring and skills training.

Amber Dawn Tutwiler received her MFA from Florida Atlantic University (2017). Originally from South Florida, she is a hybrid maker who works across painting, sculpture, audio, and installation. Her research involves the intersection between the body, narrative, and ephemerality.

VISITING MASTER ARTIST WORKSHOPS

Subtracting and Adding—Carving and ConstructionC. JAMES MEYER The act of carving leads to a different visual vocabulary of form than that of fabrication in sheet and wire. This class will explore the carving of non-metal materials, which could be wood, plastic, or Richlite (a material comprised of re-cycled paper in a natural resin). The second aspect of the class will be to use construction techniques that will embellish and make functional the carved forms, resulting in pieces of jewelry or small-scale objects.Thursday – Saturday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pmFebruary 1–3, 2018Tuition: $620 | Material Fee: $35

C. James Meyer is Professor Emeritus at Virginia Commonwealth University where he was head of the metal and jewelry program. He currently maintains a studio and continues to teach part time. This includes teaching in the University of Georgia Studies Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy, and conducting workshops at the Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, Peters Valley School of Crafts, and Touchstone Center for Craft.

Professor Meyer’s work has been exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally. His work is in private and public collections including the Museum of Arts and Design (NYC), the Racine Museum of Art (WI), the Georgia Museum of Art (GA), the Gregg Museum (NC), and the Nordenjelske Museum of Applied Art (Trondhiem, Norway). La Materia: Painting with the Earth PaletteLUCY MACGILLIS In this five-day workshop, Lucy MacGillis shares her love for hand-made, natural paint. She begins by mixing raw earth pigments from Italy with linseed oil. Working from life in the landscape, participants learn how to create their own paint and mix the colors of the limited earth palette and are guided in looking closely at the tones they see before them in the landscape. By limiting the range of colors, painters create their own tones and use the relationships of juxtaposing colors to give them more force. Using the palette knife, students work directly from observation of the landscape with the colors Venetian red, burnt sienna, terra di sienna, yellow ochre, Naples yellow, earth green, ultramarine blue, Paynes grey, burnt and raw umber, Roman black earth, and titanium white.Monday – Friday, 9:30 am – 4:30 pmJanuary 8 – 12, 2018Tuition: $650

Lucy MacGillis was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1977 and has been painting in Italy since her graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000. With grants from University of Pennsylvania, she studied at Nick Carone’s Interna-tional School of Art in Montecastello di Vibio and began a series of still lifes and landscapes there. MacGillis works from observation, mixing her own paint from raw earth pigments and linseed oil. She also teaches painting seminars in Stockbridge, Massachusetts at IS183 Art School of the Berkshires, at the Kunstfabrik in Hannover in Germany, Kunstfabrik Wien in Vienna, and privately in Italy.

Introduction to 3D Printing in ClayCARA MCKINLEY Learn the basics of operation for the Delta 3D PotterBot clay printer and how the 3D output can compliment a potter's process. Participants will be guided through basic steps to printing a 3D ceramic object. First students will scan an object of their choice to translate into a printed clay form. Manipu-lation of this form through an online CAD (computer aided design) program will be demonstrated and instruction in CAD will take place in the Armory’s newly renovated digital lab. Students will create a basic, unique shape to be printed in clay. Each student will complete the course with two 3D printed projects. Slide lectures will include discussion of the instructor’s personal art work, a look at contemporary artists work employing 3D printing, and modern applications of 3D printed forms. Minimum: 8 students.Thursday – SaturdayDates: October 5 – 7, 2017Tuition: $600 Material Fee: $15

Cara McKinley is a local of South Florida. She has always been enthralled with looking at the natural world, especially at the microscopic level. Moving to the Midwest and the mountains has inspired her to recreate these observations in clay and multimedia. Using video and 3d rendering has allowed her to recreate the essence of an object and its material quality without actually touching the material.
