Care with Purpose

Welcome to the October

edition of “Out and About”, a

newsletter showcasing Care

with Purpose in action at our

care residences.

In this newsletter, you get to see a snapshot

of what the people living at each of our

residences can achieve with some

assistance from our team working with the

Care with Purpose model of care.

Forming positive relationships with peers is a

contributing factor to feeling at home when

living at a Catholic Homes residence.

Group activities offer a way to meet people,

have fun, keep busy, and sometimes even to

contribute to community.

Small group activities that involve people’s

hobbies or interests ensure social engagement

that is meaningful, and supports a sense of

belonging for those who choose to participate.

Please browse through these wonderful photos

and stories of our Care With Purpose in action

across the residences.

SERVITE

Knitting Group

Knitting group at Servite is a regular Friday

morning event. Usually, squares are knitted

then sewn together in colourful arrangements

to make rugs, which are often given to

people in need. On the day these photos

were taken there was a pink baby’s’ bonnet

well on its way to completion.

Volunteer Ruth was taught to knit by the

original knitter’s group when she first arrived

as a volunteer over 9 years ago. She now

volunteers each week and encourages the

current group of knitters to come together in

the light and bright community room. Dora

and Agnes are two of the regulars, but others

including some friends of Servite, join the

group and share the knitting, have a cuppa

and enjoy the good company.

Small group participation is a great way to

begin caring relationships with peers.

ST VINCENT’S

Wool Bombing The project of “wool bombing” pillars in the foyer

at St Vincent’s is almost complete. The Knit and

Natter group have worked on this project for

months and the final display is spectacular. Each

wool bombed pillar represents a Catholic Homes

value of Joy, Love, and Hospitality.

Feedback from the people living at St Vincent’s

is that they love their foyer’s new look, and

homely environment it creates for all who enter.

Look at the photos of the group sewing each

piece together and assembling them onto the

pillars.

ST VINCENT’S

Board Games

Small group activities are an ideal way for

people to develop peer group friendships.

It’s wonderful to see when the people living

at St Vincent’s invite others to join them in

playing board games.

Board Games are always available in the

activity rooms.

ST VINCENT’S

River Cruise Bus Trip At St Vincent’s we have been looking at

creating new experiences during bus outings.

This month, a special river cruise along Swan

River was organised.

Cruise passengers got to see Herrison Island,

Optus Stadium, Matagarup Bridge, and

Claisebrook Cove while cruising.

OCEAN STAR

Breast Cancer

Awareness Month We got very creative at Ocean Star for Breast

Cancer Awareness month, making this

colourful bra tree to attract attention to

breast cancer awareness month.

Themed cupcakes and drinks added more to

the occasion which went down well, as

everyone loved the concept and thoroughly

enjoyed the afternoon tea.

Thanks to the team for their contributions to

the tree.

Benefits of

Bubbles Eleanor, Julie, Josephine, and Fiona

enjoy the fun of the bubble machine in

the family room. Apart from the pure

fun, visual tracking skills, hand eye

coordination, sensory processing, and

gross motor skills are all being activated

with this small group engagement.

CASTLEDARE

Knitting Group This month our friend Judy Clairs started up a

small knitting group. Judy has always knitted

for charity and knew that others may enjoy

this. Working with Alanna, she’s helped

organise a small group knitting afternoon for

those that are gifted at knitting and wish to

contribute to charity. It’s a wonderful way of

giving back to the community and

connecting in a smaller group with other

women.

CASTLEDARE

Floral Artistry A few of our wonderful ladies at

Casltedare have a real gift when it

comes to flower arranging. It’s not a

huge interest for everyone, but we

wanted to create an opportunity to

connect the small group that do

enjoy the craft.

Our lovely OT students Frankie and

Veronica set up some wildflowers to

be arranged, and we were able to

brighten up all the houses at

Castledare with the results of this

small craft group.

CASTLEDARE

Wine and Cheese

Wine and Cheese gatherings began

last month. Six people from different

houses are invited to join host lifestyle

facilitator Kathy in an intimate

gathering. These gatherings are

designed to create social connections,

as often in larger groups the focus is on

a selected activity, and we don’t have

time to really connect with each other.

From the very first evening,

conversation flowed, and we explored

topics from travel, to marriage, and to

our experiences at Catholic Homes.

These small group events will continue

to be held every few weeks, mixing and

matching different people to provide

an opportunity to talk to someone new.

Roles Acknowledged People in our community support each other

in numerous ways that make Castledare a

wonderful place to live. To show our

appreciation we organised a special

afternoon tea to thank the people that have

taken up job roles to support community. Over

half of the residents here enjoy a particular

chosen role.

At this event we presented our new ‘Job Role’

boards which and are now hung up in each

house.

Each person then received a letter of thanks,

and it was very special to see not only people

reading their own letters but sharing them with

those around their table, so others got to learn

what each person does.

We made sure to acknowledge choice, which

includes not only the choice to have a

specific role, but also the choice to not have

a role. It was wonderful to see people

embrace those who do so much to help.

TRINITY

The Fairy Wren Gift House 36 residents at Trinity, Bev and Reg

Lincoln have been married for 57 years! At

a recent on-site exhibition by artist,

photographer, and valued volunteer

Graham Green, Reg managed to secure

the perfect gift for Bev. He came across

Bev’s favourite bird the beautiful ‘Fairy

Wren’ amongst the exhibition items. Reg

secretly made the purchase and Graham

organised the framing. Reg presented this

thoughtful gift to Bev at the end of month

party celebrating their 57 years of wedded

bliss. A bottle of bubbles thrown in by the

team added some more sparkle to the

celebration.

ARCHBISHOP GOODY HOUSE

Meaningful

Engagement Care With Purpose involves meaningful

engagement. Here Deborah and Pat

relax and reminiscence while listening to

their favourite music. Meanwhile, Tony is

keeping occupied by polishing the

silverware.

ARCHBISHOP GOODY HOUSE

Small Group Activity Not everyone enjoys the same activities, and so it

is important that small group engagement is

supported at residences. Here activity at a small

craft group is being enjoyed.

ARCHBISHOP GOODY HOUSE

Matilda Bay David is on our Coffee Bus Reminiscence tour at

Matilda Bay, and he tells us about how he would

come to Matilda Bay in his youth and would fish

here with family and friends.

FEATURE

Meet Val Time has not slowed down multi-award-winning

poet Val Laughton who finds time every day to

reflect and keep a diary of her thoughts and ideas.

Inspired to paint and write at aged eight by her

artist grandfather Thomas Pridham, Val overcame

early criticism (“why would a girl do that?”) to

maintain a lifetime of creativity.

Val is proud that she does not need eyeglasses

or hearing aids to keep up with her hobbies

which include knitting, stitching and of course,

writing.

Her skill has been put to good use, including

donating knitted dolls for children overseas and

helping ‘yarn-bomb’ the foyer pillars at

St Vincent’s where she lives.

Listed in an international who’s who of poetry,

Val has been extensively published and has won

several awards including writer of the year.

Val was born in South Australia, and is a relation

of Australian poet and journalist

C J Dennis (famed for the “Sentimental Bloke”

verse novel).

Val has worked as a midwife and nurse and was

in the Solomon Islands during a time of crisis there

in the early 1970s.

Married for 53 years to husband Robert (dec.),

the couple had three children, and Val now has

11 great grandchildren.

Val credits being a good listener and staying

positive as keys to a productive and enjoyable

life.

“We are all given a gift and we have to use it,”

she said.

NEXT EDITION

November 2021 Next month we will be focusing on our

exciting plans to help people living at

Catholic Homes residences to experience a

life of purpose. Keep an eye out for the next

edition of “Out & About”.
