OCTOBER 2018 WEEK 4 – TERM 4
Dear Saints Parents
It has been a jam-packed fourth term so far, and so we wish you all a fantastic and well-deserved mid-term break!
We look forward to welcoming you all back on to campus on Tuesday morning, refreshed and ready for the last few weeks of the 2018 school year!
The basketball clash between St Charles College and Maritzburg College is arguably the most anticipated
game in the province, and the most recent instalment did not disappoint.
In front of a capacity crowd, Maritzburg College looked to protect home court advantage. Recent years
have seen the Saints team coming out on top, but Maritzburg College were determined to break the recent
trend. With a high paced attack and strong defence, College jumped on the young Saints team and built a
healthy lead in the first quarter. The SCC team played hard throughout the first half but struggled to convert
early opportunities and ultimately spent the half just trying to limit the damage. The third quarter was when
St Charles College was able to turn the game around. The strong defence throughout the game contributed
to the change in momentum; however it was the short purple patch on offense which allowed the Saints to
take the lead.
There were some panicky moments towards the end of the game when Maritzburg College fouled in order
to keep the game alive; however, the Saints were able to hold on for a narrow win, keeping their winning
streak against College alive. Final score was St Charles College 44 – 41 Maritzburg College.
The Saints 1st XI made the short trip to Goldstones
on Saturday for their derby game against perennial
powerhouses, Maritzburg College. It’s not often that
you don’t fancy winning a toss and choosing what you
would like to do first up. The deck was an excellent
one, but there were overcast skies and heavy rain the
night before meant there was always going to be
something for the bowlers in the morning. As it turned
out, College won the toss and elected to bat first,
choosing a total on the board was more valuable than
chasing on a wicket that would ultimately wear down
and keep low, making it hard to score.
SCC bowled superbly all innings and having College 160/9, they would have thought that half way through
the match they had the upper hand. College, however, had other thoughts and their 10th wicket partnership
Basketball vs Maritzburg College
Cricket vs Maritzburg College
saw them reach 204 after their
allotted 50 overs, frustrating the
SCC bowlers and setting a very
defendable total. SCC in reply
began their innings slowly, losing
two quick wickets to the excellent
bowling pair of Jayden Gengan
and Mondli Khumalo. However,
Nathaniel Benjamin and Jason
Login steadied the ship until the
23rd over where Benjamin lost his
wicket on the stroke of tea.
That left SCC 75/3 after 25 overs.
With 25 overs left SCC were
confident of reaching their target.
Login (64), batting beautifully with
Madande (27) to put on an excellent partnership and look set to take the match away from College.
The game then turned on its head when College skipper, Andre Bradford, took off his keeper pads and
promptly took 5 wickets when SCC were coasting to victory. Madhevere was the last hope for SCC, but
when he was out for 48, SCC lost their way and fell short by 29 runs, inside their 50 overs. This is another
bitter loss for the Saints who consistently put themselves into winning positions, but just aren’t able to
capitalise when it matters most. They will be straight back to work in preparation for the final two games of
the season against Northwood and Kearsney.
It was a busy week for the Saints cricket teams with fixtures against various schools and teams.
The U9A team played in two fixtures and won both. On Friday afternoon they beat Laddsworth and on

played in 2 games, winning both.

Rise Against Hunger On Friday, 19 October, a group of St Charles College boys joined a
meal-packing event for World Hunger Action Month, hosted by the
non-profit organization Rise Against Hunger.
Rise Against Hunger is an international hunger relief organization
that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most
vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources in the hope to end
hunger by 2030.
Four schools joined together, in common purpose, strapping on
hairnets to set about packing over 9000 meals.
Our time together, while brief, was worthwhile. The event provided
the opportunity to have tangible involvement as we discussed the
great need around SA and across the world. – Mr Ross Ducasse
