A letter from the president, Scott Shulimson

Hello Franklin-McKinley Education Association, As you have probably heard, the old CTA building that housed FMEA, and most teachers’ associations on the East side, had a very serious fire in May. As a result, FMEA and the other teachers’ unions that were housed at the old building now have a new home at 1333 Piedmont Rd. It’s a little further than the old building, but will be an effective location to meet members’ needs once we have completed the move-in process. The move has been long and challenging, but we are now up and running. Feel free to stop by and check out FMEA’s new home!

last spring, is running. She is being challenged by Sylvia Ornelas-Wise. FMEA Rep Council voted to endorse Maimona, who is an RSP teacher in Alum Rock, and is very active with special ed and labor issues. The long-awaited Supreme Court ruling on the Janus case is starting to have an impact statewide, but so far that impact has been very limited within FMEA. That may change. There are hundreds of people being hired and trained by groups connected to the wealthiest people and corporations in this country. They are attacking unions by attempting to reduce union membership because we remain one of the only obstacles between these wealthiest individuals and their goal of further weakening the middle class in this country. You may be contacted by these union-busters in the near future, and I hope you will not forget who is funding them and why. Thank you for all you do, and as always, don’t hesitate to get in touch with any questions, ideas or concerns. Sincerely, Scott Shulimson

Though we just settled our contract in June, it’s time to return to the bargaining table. I’m frequently asked why we bargain every year instead of the three-year deals that were more common in past decades. The answer is that in districts like ours with severe declining enrollment, it’s difficult to get the district to commit to salary increases in future years that hold major uncertainties. It’s less challenging when those uncertainties become obvious facts of the current year. It’s hard work bargaining every year, but I’m confident that we ultimately have reached much better settlements by bargaining every year. This year, any article in the contract can be opened. You should now have the FMEA bargaining survey. Make sure to include any needed improvements to our contract when you take the survey. Charlie Nave and Lyn Irvine are leaving the bargaining team after a decade of successful contract negotiations. They will be missed, but this does open some spots for anyone interested in joining the team. FMEA and the district will release our initial “sunshine” proposals in November, and begin bargaining later that month. It’s too early in the process to make any predictions, but I’m hopeful that we will once again receive a retroactive raise for the current year. Our salary is fairly competitive, but benefits is where our district lags behind. Luckily, it appears that there will be no increase for Kaiser or Anthem in the coming year. We always have school board elections in even-numbered years. Omar Torres has decided not to run for re-election, but two other incumbents, Than Tran and Rudy Rodriguez, will continue. Parent and newcomer to the board, Kerry Rosado, entered the race. Because there are exactly three candidates for three spots, there will not be an election for these seats. Than, Rudy, and Kerry will all be on the school board. There will, however, be an election for the spot vacated by John Lindner. Maimona Afzal-Berta, who was appointed to fill Lindner’s spot
