FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO
Your permanent CEO, Harry Hawkins, has taken annual leave commencing Friday 21st September, in
time for the Eagles preliminary final win and the GRAND FINAL on the 29th September. Great timing
Harry!
My name is Eddie Piper and I am here for the 4 weeks while Harry is away. I live in Morley and have
worked in Local Government since 1982 mainly at the City of Melville and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder.
Since ”retiring” in 2007 I have undertaken various relief positions around the State, the most recent at
the Shire of Mt. Magnet.
GENERAL OBSERVATION
Your Shire looks terrific with all the street art and decorations and is a credit to all at the Shire and the
residents of Sandstone. The Shire staff are keen to help residents and visitors.
SEPTEMBER COUNCIL MEETING
The September 2018 Council meeting included an item requesting Council to consider taking over the
running of the Sandstone Post Office agency on the completion of Gina Gloede’s contract. Council
resolved as follows: “That Council advise Australia Post that it is willing to take on the role of
Community Postal Agent in Sandstone and that the agency will operate from the current Shire
Administration Centre”.
This being the case Council are working on taking over the agency commencing 1 November 2018.
Council staff will undertake necessary training and modifications to the office will take place over the
next month.
The Council also considered at the meeting the erection of fences at the front and rear of lots 98 and 99
Payne Street Sandstone following complaints from neighbours about the noise from trucks parking on
the lots. The lots are held in freehold by the Shire. Council resolved as follows: “That lots 98 & 99
Payne Street Sandstone shall be fenced front and rear with standard colour bond steel fencing and it
shall be paid for from savings to be identified in the mid-year budget review”.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The annual financial audit of the Shire will be held on the 8th and 9th October and it is anticipated that
the Annual Financial Statements for the year ended 30th June 2018 will be presented to the October
2018 Council Meeting.
CLOSING
Harry returns to work on Monday 22nd October in time for closing day at the Golf Club.
Regards,
Eddie Piper Acting CEO

POST
To all my dear friends of Sandstone. I would like to advise you all that on the 31st October 2018 the Post Office will be closing. After speaking to the CEO and Councillors, it has been decided that the Shire of Sandstone will take over the postal agency. It comes with great sadness and I will truly miss my sorting of mail, all the chats on the verandah, not only a quick chat we have solved many problems of the world and drank more coffee than we should. I will miss you all. It has been a wonderful twelve years full of beautiful memories for which I thank you. From your Post Mistress Regina.

Due to the Ambulance Service no longer being available in Sandstone, if you needed to call an ambulance it would have to travel from Mt Magnet, which would incur substantial costs before you even get into the ambulance.
It is highly recommended that people take out their own ambulance cover.
The following in an excerpt from the St John Ambulance website.
In country Western Australia, St John Country Ambulance Cover is available
The cost of your ambulance trip is covered if you have comprehensive Country Ambulance Cover.
This includes as many emergency or necessary non-emergency transports you, or one of your family
members, require.
Within WA, St John Country Ambulance Cover will protect you for St John Ambulance transport 24
hours a day, 365 days a year. The subscription coverage is restricted to ambulance transport
provided by St John in Western Australia and ambulance services in other States who have a
reciprocal arrangement with St John Ambulance Western Australia.
The Benefit fund pricing arrangement is available to all residents living in regional Western Australia.
For the terms and conditions of this service, or to purchase a benefit fund card via credit card, please
contact our team on (08) 9334 1284.
Ambulance cover is also available from various Private Health insurers if you choose not to use St John Country Ambulance Cover

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book
“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior
SANDSTONE SCHOOLS—continued Not all the pupils lived in the township. May Elliott lived at Spring Park Station homestead, about 3km north of town. From a very early age, she would drive herself to school in a horse and sulky every morning. She would unharness the horse and put him in a stable behind the school before classes, and lead him down to the government well for a drink at lunchtime. There were always children wanting to lead the horse for her. After school, she would harness up, then do any shopping for her mother, mostly from Welshman ‘Bunny’ Hug’s grocery store in Hack Street, before driving home. When the Bealing family arrived in Sandstone in 1918, the teacher was Tom Christie, a supply teacher in poor health who had replaced J Christie. After school broke up on Friday, he would do his laundry for the week, hang it on the line, then retire to bed for the weekend, only to appear on Monday morning, when he often found that the ever-present goats had eaten his clothes off the line, only leaving the little bits held by the pegs. The goats played a prominent part in Sandstone life, and many past residents have memories of their antics. Another trick they had was strumming on the keys of the piano while they ate sheet music, if the door to the hall had been carelessly left open. By 1920 there were still two schools operating in Sandstone, one State school and one run by the Presentation nuns. The teacher at the State school at the time was still Tom Christie. His poor health had kept him out of the forces, and teachers were in very short supply. The year 1922 saw Mr Jennings’ arrival to Sandstone with his English war bride, Vera. He was headmaster from 1922 to 1924, when he was transferred to Leonora. Jennings was an accomplished artist, and delighted in doing caricatures of people. One of these that still remains is of Buzza, the roads board Secretary at that time. One of Jennings’ methods of calling a pupil to the front of the class would be a lightening sketch of that pupil on the blackboard, which he would then tap with his pointer while issuing the command, “You, up here!” Another method he had of attracting a student’s attention was to flick, very accurately, a small piece of chalk at the offender. In 1923 the school moved from its original building to the north end of the court house, and where the first student to be enrolled was Lucy Williamson. At the time, there were only thirteen pupils. In the years 1946—1952, the school was struggling to maintain numbers, and by 1965 there were only two pupils left. R Burt MLA and Peter Coyne MLA did their best to keep the school open, in the hope that more children would come to the district, and the shire even employed a man with a large family to boost numbers, but he did not stay, so the school was closed in 1966, while W E (Bill) Gaynor was headmaster. Over 600 children had passed through the school since its opening in 1907. During the 1930s and 1940s, the teachers wives were an integral part of the small school, as they taught sewing to the girls. The Sandstone school reopened in 1978, with twelve pupils and Andrew Breed as headmaster. It has been operational ever since, although there have been times when the numbers have dropped dangerously low. In recent times, the school has been staffed by a headmaster plus one full-time teacher and registrar, Bethel Walton; when numbers were high or a relief teacher was required, another teacher was employed on a casual basis, Vickie Mcquie, the wife of pastoralist David McQuie. NOTE: The school closed permanently in December 2013 Sandstone Convent, St Athanasius Following the attendance of nuns from the Presentation Order at Lawlers at the opening of the new Roman Catholic church, the parishioners of Sandstone decided to invite the Order to establish a convent school in Sandstone. A group from Geraldton was willing and on 9 August 1909, a letter was sent to them asking the Superior how long it would be before a group could leave. She replied that she had a group ready to leave the next week. Ruth Marchant James, in her book Cork to Capricorn describes in intimate detail the journey made by Mothers Lellia Russel and Brigid Kenny following their departure from Geraldton on 18th August 1909 on their way to Sandstone, first by rail to Mt Magnet, then by two-horse buggy to Sandstone. It would be impossible to guess what went through the minds of these previously sheltered wo=men as they travelled further and further away from the sea at Geraldton, and across what would surely have appeared as brown, tractless wastes to them. …../ to be continued.
