FROM THE DESK OF THE CEO
As we welcome in the new financial year we also welcome a new staff member Plant Operator George Christie. George has moved into the newly renovated house at 18 Griffith Street. George comes from a mining background and although he has been living in Geraldton he owns a house in Meekatharra and is familiar with the Sandstone area. With the new financial year comes a new budget which this year we hope to be adopting a bit earlier than the last couple of years, the downside of this for local ratepayers is that the rates notices will be going out earlier. June Council Meeting The June Council Meeting was postponed until the 29
th to enable visitors working on the
Murchison Geo Tourism project to attend and present to Council. Professor Ross Dowling from Edith Cowan University, his wife Wendy and Adam Murszewski from the Midwest Development Commission gave a power point presentation on Geo Tourism and how in China, the Scandina-vian region of Europe and other countries like the United States of America it has become a major tourist drawcard while pointing out the potential in the Murchison for it to attract a large number of tourists to the 7 shires involved in the project. Geo Tourism is not just about geology and rocks but showcases the geo sites as well as the environment (plants and animals) and culture (people) of a region. At the meeting Council resolved to allow the CEO to apply for permission from the Minister for Local Government to charge a different level of rates to home owners, pastoralists and miners. Other resolutions were passed to award tenders to Remote Area Mechanical for maintenance grading and Rangeview Assets for bulldozing to help the shire works crew keep our roads in the good condition they are. Other Items Shire road construction staff have almost completed the works on the Menzies Road, resheet-ing and repairing drainage on parts of the road. While our staff are finishing up on the Menzies Road flood damage contractors are still working on the Yeelirrie Road where they will be for a few more months as there is a lot of damage to repair. As usual I ask all motorists to obey speed restrictions at road works and keep our staff and contractors safe while they repair our roads to keep you safe.

*******************************************************************************************************
At a hotel restaurant, a man sees an attractive woman sitting alone at the next table. Suddenly she sneezes, and a glass eye comes flying out of her eye socket. It hurls by the man, and he snatches it from the air and hands it back to her. “This is so embarrassing,” the woman says, and she pops her eye back in place. “I’m sorry to have disturbed you. Let me buy you dinner to make it up to you. May I join you?” He nods. The woman is a stimulating conversationalist, stunningly pretty, and the man finds they have a lot in common. He gets her phone number and asks, “You are the most charming woman I’ve ever encountered. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?” “No,” she replies. “You just happened to catch my eye.”

HISTORY CORNER— An excerpt from the book
“Sandstone—from Gold to Wool and Back Again” by Sally L Senior
Youanmi - pg 319
Youanmi is unique among the satellite towns of Sandstone in that it has had three major lives so far.
The first Europeans to visit the Youanmi area were Robert Austin, Assistant Government Surveyor, and his party in
1854. Even though they did not actually pass over where Youanmi was to be situated later, they passed
reasonably close when they visited Poison Rocks, approximately 35 km south-west of what was later to become
Youanmi townsite.
The first gold discovery in the Youanmi area was by Thomas Payne, in about 1894-1895, who later found gold at
Paynesville and Paynes Find. Although it is said that he found gold on this trip, he did not consider the find to be of
any great value, as he did not return until roughly two years later, in 1896, when he went reef mining again with
others in the Youanmi area, the year before he discovered gold at Paynesville.
In 1905, ‘Dan’ Rowan and George Moore took up leases on several reefs in the region. The saving grace of the
claims was said at the time to be the availability of water, which was just enough to survive on. However, this
assumption that there was sufficient water was proved to be false as more prospectors arrived at the new field, and
it became apparent that shortage of water was to be a major problem in the area.
There was little further interest in the area until 1907, when a new find was reported at Coorong (the first official
name for the Youanmi area), 45 miles south-west of the new town of Sandstone. The name did not stick, as the
area was more commonly known as You-and-Me, or Youanme, but later changed in December 1910 to Youanmi.
At the time of the discovery of reef gold at Youanmi in 1907, the area was included in the Lawlers Roads Board
area, by geographical position only, as it had no connection except by a circuitous route, with this area.
During 1907 there was a steady stream of prospectors leaving Sandstone for Coorong. As a result, the supply of
water became severely pressed. A public meeting was held at Coorong, as this was a major concern to the
prospectors there. At the same meeting, it was proposed that Coorong be attached to the Black Range mining
district, not the Mt Magnet or Lawlers, as it was more like the Black Range district in its needs, as well as closer to
that town (roughly 50 miles as against roughly 80 miles to Mt Magnet). It was also suggested that in the future all
mails for Coorong be left at White Well and sent by horseback or bicycle by the Postmaster-General’s Department,
or, failing that, that the mail coaches between Sandstone and Mt magnet run via Coorong and Bellchambers.
At the end of 1907, the new Youanmi field was mentioned in Parliament, quoting Montgomery, the State Mining
Engineer. He pointed out that it would be much more serviceable to allocate the new area to the newly formed
Black Range Roads Board instead of the Lawlers. This was duly done in 1909, when Youanmi officially became
attached to the Black Range Roads Board district. At the same time, it became attached to the Black Range district
of the East Murchison Goldfield, under Warden Clifton.
As with any new field, there was great interest in Youanmi at Sandstone, so when the two prospectors Christensen
and Bonnie took a 2CWT load of specimen stones to Sandstone from their Youanmi prospecting area in January
1908 and displayed them there at the warden’s office, it caused a great deal of excitement. In February 1908, the
new field was visited by Assistant Geologist Charles C Gibson of the WA Department of Mines, but he was not very
impressed with the area, and did not give a favourable report, saying that prospecting was still vey superficial. He
was followed by Colbran, the Inspector of Mines, who have an even more scathing report.
Due to the efforts of the prospectors who sank a bore to relieve the lack of water at Youanmi townsite, ample fresh
water had been struck nearby, and this helped by saving carting water to the field. The foreman of the boring party
was M Fallon, who was praised for his good work.
Continued next month.
