NOTES FROM PASTOR DARRYL

{on Sunday, September 10, I was honored to participate in the Installation of the Rev. Ken Coleman as the Settled Minister at Alpine Community Church. I was invited to give the “Charge to the Minister

and Congregation.” My part was well-received and I was encouraged to use it as this month’s Divine Comedy.}

October 2017 The Christian Calendar will tell us that we are in Ordinary Time. But newspapers and press releases, scrolls across the bottom of our screens and alerts on our phones will tell us that these are anything but ordinary times. And sure, it can be tempting to bury our heads or get distracted by the ideal climate of San Diego; our wonderful recreational opportunities; going to wine tasting in Temecula or running up to Julian to get some apple pie, or take a hike among the desert blossoms; and of course, we can always just slip away on a siesta in our comfy chairs. It can be so easy to say that those things happen over there … to those people. What are they to us? But our village is now global, our neighbors stretch across borders and ocean, our kin speak every known conceivable language, have skin tones that make up the BIG box of Crayola crayons, define family in a variety of make ups, and people worship in a myriad of styles and wish to sing a variety of songs that are traditional, contemporary, chants, and spirituals. And just in case you haven’t heard, thermonuclear is back on the table for the first time since the 80’s. No, the days of ordinary time may

Page 10: October 2017 Stewardship Sunday is Nov. 19 Pledge Drive ... · PDF file•Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner, ... Update Profile ... to set the oppressed free.”

come, but this is not that day. These are extraordinary times and we’ve been called to times such as these. So my charge to us this day is simply this: allow the seasons of the Christian Calendar to inspire and inform your individual and collective ministry and mission all year round. Light the Advent’s Candles of HOPE, PEACE, LOVE, and JOY today and allow them to burn brightly in your message and prayers all year round. Make a little room in your hearts for Christ to be born in you each moment of every day; let the solemnness of silent night bring you a heavenly peace even in the heat of summer. Practice Lent’s disciplines of sharing our abundance with the poor, displaying the courage to confess our short-comings and offering amazing grace of forgiveness to others, pour over the scriptures with diligent study, and live the fast the God chooses – “to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free.” (Isaiah 58) Let the Hallelujahs of Easter ring from the rooftops of this place and make a joyful noise unto the Lord, for Christ is Risen today! Trust in Easter even when a Good Friday comes you. Covenant with one another that when one of us gets stuck behind a boulder in our proverbial tombs, that we’ll push with all our might to roll each other’s stones away. Let Pentecost’s fire stoke your imaginations and forge your spiritual gifts. Be a Pentecost community that welcomes all of the 21st century Ethiopian eunuchs, Greek intellectuals, and female apostles. Proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the earth from your little corner of it.

Page 11: October 2017 Stewardship Sunday is Nov. 19 Pledge Drive ... · PDF file•Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner, ... Update Profile ... to set the oppressed free.”

And please do not forget the special days as well. Let Ash Wednesday make you continually grateful for the time you have been given. Make sure your communion meal is one of abundance and you have set a place around the table for everyone and anyone. Know you can always lean on the wisdom and witness of our ancestors, those saints of old and new, the infamous and the unknown. When you are lost, stand upon their shoulders so you can see where you have come from, and you can discern the path ahead. And Let Christ Reign! Preach Christ crucified and risen. Sow the seeds of the kingdom on earth as they are in heaven until that time God takes God’s place among us mortals by the Jordan River, where we will study war no more, and we will live together in peace. Amen. Peace. Love. Understanding.

Introduction to The Aramaic Lord’s Prayer

Learn the Prayer of Jesus in Aramaic, the language he spoke.

A four evening series, meeting once a month

1st Friday, October 6, 2017 7-9 PM3rd Friday, November 17, 2017 7-9 PM 1st Friday, December 1, 2017 7-9 PM 1st Friday, January 5, 2018 7-9 PM

LOCATION: Kensington Community Church 4773 Marlborough Dr, San Diego

FACILITATOR: Louise Jacobus 619-415-3568

Each month, we will learn one line of the prayer, exploring in depth the spiritual teachings that are contained in the Aramaic. Each month, we will also practice saying the whole prayer in Aramaic, so these sacred words become familiar and easy to say.

The class will be a mixture of lecture and experiential activities. The lectures will explore the translations of the Aramaic and the deeper meanings contained in these words. The experiential activities include a simple form of body prayer with easy to learn melodies that help us embody the teachings and bring them into our everyday lives. See reverse for more information.

Come, come whoever you are!

You are welcome….… if you are comfortable with your faith, but want to add more embodied and

experiential practices to your spiritual life.…if you have been wounded by organized religion and yet still want to

understand what Jesus came to teach.…if you have never felt comfortable in traditional Christianity, but are looking

for a joyful and life-giving way to connect with the wisdom of Jesus’ teachings.

Come to one meeting, or come to all four!(over for more information)

Page 20: October 2017 Stewardship Sunday is Nov. 19 Pledge Drive ... · PDF file•Please bring a dish to share for our potluck dinner, ... Update Profile ... to set the oppressed free.”

About the class

• The class will be a mixture of lecture and experiential activities. The lectures consider the direct translations of the Aramaic, as well as the spiritual understandings of these words.

• The transformative power of this prayer is best experienced by joining together in simple movements with music or body prayers that accompany each line. These gentle movements help us experience the prayer, not only through our minds, but also through our hearts.

• However, for people who do not want to participate in the movement, it will be fine to just watch. If it is difficult for you to stand, the easy movements can be adapted to sitting.

• No experience is needed to participate. Everything needed will be taught before we begin. The movements and melodies to the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic are simple, gentle, and easy to learn.

• If there is interest, a Part Two will be offered, completing all lines of the prayer.

About the facilitator

Louise Jacobus has been studying and exploring the Lord’s Prayer in Aramaic for about 30 years. She finds that the wisdom and guidance contained in this prayer continue to open and deepen her understanding of the spiritual life. She enjoyed being raised in the Dutch Reformed Church and Presbyterian traditions, but found she wanted to explore practices that reflected the living reality of Jesus’ teachings. Louise is a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist and she is a member of Kensington Community Church.

About the musician

Annye Love will be accompanying us on keyboard. Annye was raised in a missionary family, developing a great love for the spiritual teachings of Jesus and a strong desire to help people of diverse cultures. In addition to her involvement with music, Annye is a bilingual teacher, and volunteers to teach English as a second language to refugees in San Diego.

Donations

In the spirit of giving and receiving from the heart, a donation basket will be available at each class. All donations after expenses will benefit local organizations assisting survivors of human trafficking.

Our Stewardship Journey

For the last half-decade, KCC has been on a

journey to responsible stewardship,

sustainability and increased mission giving. Due

to the tremendous generosity of members and

friends of our congregation, the legacy gifts of our Heritage Builders, and

diligence toward budget integrity, we have travelled far in terms of our deficit

spending.

We have much to celebrate! We have much for which to Thank God!

As we take these next steps along the WAY OF JESUS: the journey

to generosity, let us also celebrate how far we have come.

Thank you so much for your gifts of time, prayers, energy, and money.
