Each 4-H member who paid their dues should re-ceive a project book for each of the 4-H projects selected. 4-H members should start reading and working in their book-lets today. Record sheets located in each book should be completed over the next five (5) months. These record sheets will be incorporated into the overall 4-H Record Book that 4-H’ers are to turn in on Febru-ary 27th.

How to complete a 4-H record book will be discussed at a special Record Book Workshop that is sched-uled for Tuesday, December 22. The workshop will be held at the Lafayette Extension Office with more details to

be provided in the November Hotline.

Project Books Arriving Soon! Join Team JUNIOR LEADER! Be part of the action! Stand apart from the crowd! Being part of the Lafayette Junior Leader Team certainly has its advantages. The Junior Leadership Club takes the lead role in parish-wide service-learning. The club also helps out in other parish 4-H activities, such as contest days, workshops, etc. This is one of the greatest

experiences of a high school 4-H’er. Any way you look at it, you can’t afford NOT to be a 4-H Junior Leader.

Membership is open to all 8-12th graders in Lafayette Parish. Dues are $5.00 for one year. If you missed the September meeting, try not to miss the next one scheduled for Wednesday, October 27th at 6:00p.m. at the 4-H Office. This will be our Halloween Party! We’ll have a costume contest.

In selecting a show animal, it is important to remember that every animal is not a potential show animal. Show prospects should be of highest quality. For members and par-ents just starting with livestock, it is most important to get help from someone who has experience in selecting show animal projects. Also, remember that the best places to buy your show animal prospect are from a "reputable" breeder or at a proven show prospect sale.

Now is the time to begin preparing if you plan to exhibit livestock at the 4-H livestock shows in January and February. Members can show cattle, sheep, goats, swine and/or poultry at these shows. Interested students should already have joined 4-H and enrolled in the appropriate project (beef, sheep, etc.)

To be eligible to show livestock in the January and Febru-ary shows, 4-H’ers must get their animals before certain POSSESSION DATES each year. Currently, these are as fol-lows:

Exhibition Poultry—November 1st

Market Animals (goats, lambs , commercial does, commercial ewes, commercial heifers) November 7th.

Breeding Animals (beef, dairy, sheep, and goats - November 7th

Market, commercial, and breeding swine - December 5th

The 4-H horse shows are normally held each year in July, separate from the livestock shows. Possession date for the 4-H horse shows is April 1st.

Heads Up, Hands Out 4-Healthy Hearts

According to the National and Community Service Act of 1990, Service-Learning is: organized service experiences that meet real community needs. The service is integrated into the curriculum where there is purposeful learning taking place.

A critical part of service-learning includes reflection which provides youth the opportunity to “think about” their experience. Service-learning enables youth to utilize newly acquired skills and knowledge and typically enhances what is taught either in the classroom or in a community setting. Service-learning extends the world of the youth by extending the community and fostering a sense of caring for others. Service-learning is best thought of as a cycle, where each step in the process leads to the next.

Service-learning has many benefits. You can move beyond your school or 4-H program experience to see the importance of learning in real life experiences. It enhances your self-esteem and sense of civic responsibility by actively making a difference. This is by your involvement in meaningful contributions to your community.

Service-learning broadens perspectives and enhances critical thinking skills. Studies show that service-learning improves interpersonal and human relations skills, which are increasingly viewed as the most important skills in achieving success in professional and personal spheres.

All 4-H officers are to attend the Parish 4-H Officer Training Meeting to be held:

DATE: Monday, October 12th

TIME: 5:00 PM - 6:45 PM

PLACE: Lafayette Middle School

1301 W. University

Lafayette, LA 70506

Officers will learn what their duties are and how to perform those duties.

A 4-H Parent/Volunteer Orientation meeting will be held while the officers are in their training sessions. The purpose is to increase communication, learn what opportunities are available for volunteers, gain knowledge about the LSU AgCenter and 4-H Programs. Come join in and get involved by becoming a 4-H VOLUNTEER!

Be the CHANGE! This summer, 4-H’ers from through-

out Louisiana voted CHILD DEVELOP-MENT/ FOSTER CHILDREN as the service-learning focus of the year. Join the Loui-siana State 4-H Citizenship Board in supporting their campaign. The goal of the project is to educate on the needs of child devel-opment systems in Louisiana.

Child development refers to the physical, intellectual, emo-tional, and social development of a child from birth until adoles-cence. During this phase it is vital children receive support for positive development. That’s where 4-H can help be the change in a child’s life.

Looking for a way to get more involved in this project with your 4-H club? We will include a list of suggestions of ways your club can participate throughout the school year. Projects can be for any youth serving organization including parish department of child and family services, foster care organizations, schools, youth groups, or any other local organization.

Make Halloween treat bags with healthy snacks

Hold a “Trick or Treat” at a local hospital or shelter complete with costumes

Volunteer to read at the local library (great 4-H marketing too!)
