A NOTE FROM JIM

Happy October!!!

Last month I wrote about happiness and the little steps we can take to feel and to be truly happy. This month I am going to write about Wellness. I am not a Wellness expert, but over the past decade or so I have been to many wellness presentations and seminars. I learned that Wellness is a term that is very difficult to define because it may be different for every person. My personal definition is that Wellness is the reality of moving forward and striving to be better or just as good as you were yesterday. Does this happen every day and you actually become more well than the day be-fore? No, because there are so many variables that can alter your daily wellness path. But keeping focused on the simple things of improving your life can be more enjoyable and less discouraging. So just strive to be a lit-tle better each day, better to yourself, better to your neighbor, and better to your soul. Don't despair if you miss the mark-----there is always tomorrow. October can be a month of Happy changes. Nature is preparing for the cold winter ahead, and many of us at the end of the month are preparing to be SCARED! Halloween is a fun time here at Twin Lakes with Harvest Fes-tival on October 30th. We also are going to beautiful Keeneland for a day in Kentucky. Please read the Twin Lakes press for more details on all of the events, and tune in from time to time to channel 4 for any last minute changes or updates. Thanks again for all of your feedback which makes our community the best it can be. It is our privilege to serve! Thanks for living here at Twin Lakes!

LEC FOUNDATION As Fall is upon us, we all begin to prepare for the last months of the year. Do you find yourself looking longingly to the birth of Christ? Recently, I heard once again how activity focused we have become as a society with the hustle and bustle of trying to do so much. This creates stress, disharmony, rushing about, and feeling unfulfilled. I find myself wanting to slow down during this time of year, with an intentional focus on what I should be spending my time on and with whom. For the last several years I carved out some special time to attend two mini retreats on Saturdays in order to re-charge and re-energize so that I focus on the RIGHT and MEANINGFUL needs that appear each day vs. trying to do too much with too little time. At this time we seem to be a bit more generous and look to bless others and organizations. I hope that we will share some of that generosity with Twin Lakes to allow us to continue to serve our residents in a meaningful and purposeful way. We have just launched our second session of the Opening Minds Through Art Program and will celebrate with our residents and families in early December. This is a heartwarming experience to witness. Thank you to our residents and volunteers from the community who have helped to make this a huge success which enhances the quality of life for our residents. A few residents have approached the LEC Foundation to explore a memorial tree and other planting campaigns for Twin Lakes. There will be further communication as the plan takes form. The hope is to have residents from each community to opt into helping create the memorial tree planting throughout the campus. If you are interested, please contact Fred Moore or Martha Seaman to learn more about the dream. Thank you to everyone who helped Life Enriching Communities to celebrate our founding. 150 guests, residents, associates and adult children gathered on September 25

th to commemorate this worthy accomplishment.

We invite our residents to consider making a planned gift to Twin Lakes. A planned gift can take the form of an estate gift (placing us in your will); doing a charitable gift annuity, naming Twin Lakes as the beneficiary of a bank account, or naming Twin Lakes as the beneficiary of your refund. Families recently made gifts of their refunds in 2014. Should you want to explore such options, please call Molly at 719-3540 to arrange a time to gather. Happy Fall and Abundant Blessings to you All! LEC Foundation Team

Resident Corner

John and Louise Lake In spite of living at Twin Lakes only a few weeks, John and Louise Lake are already taking an active role in

our community. Their positive attitudes and their interest in so many activities will make them valued additions

to Twin Lakes.

They are both natives of Charlotte, North Carolina and retired there after making many moves during their

married life. They have a daughter who is a school psychologist in Illinois. Their other daughter and her family

live in Cincinnati.

John and Louise are not total newcomers to Cincinnati. For the past few years, they have maintained a condo

here so that they could make frequent visits to their daughter and her family. This condo has enabled them to

take an active part in the lives of their grandchildren.

John and Louise first met when they were in first grade. Louise always attended the public schools in Charlotte,

but John finished high school at Oak Ridge Military Institute. They had a first date when they were in high

school; however, they didn’t begin to date seriously until after high school. John went to North Carolina State

University, and Louise attended Salem College, in Winston Salem, North Carolina.

John had been in ROTC in both high school and college. After graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and

began flight training. They subsequently married, and their first home was at Lockland AFB. John remained

in the military for eight years. Both of their daughters were born in Okinawa. For thirty years, John was a pilot

for United usually flying out of Chicago.

Louise majored in psychology in college, but she also became a skilled pianist and organist, especially in

church. She also organized a group called the Outreach Singers which became very popular in retirement

homes. In addition, Louise has used her music skills to work effectively with Alzheimer patients.

After retirement in 1991, the couple moved back to Charlotte so that they could be near their families. John

was bored with retirement, so for three years he taught a safety course to flight attendants. Much of the course

dealt with communication skills, particularly between the flight attendants and the pilots. He also was an active

volunteer at a local hospital and donated many hours of labor to Habitat for Humanity.

John is a photographer who began to be asked to take group photographs of children’s activities. This grew

into a profitable small business. Louise became involved with the computer work and the scheduling.

Louise and John have always enjoyed traveling. Perhaps their favorite trip was a Mediterranean cruise with

Garrison Keeler and his associates. They have enjoyed gardening and are getting back into playing bridge. We

look forward to having them as active members of our Twin Lakes community.

THE COLORS OF AUTUMN ABOUND IN THE CAMPUS SHOP You will find the colors of autumn in wreaths, napkins, pot holders, scarves and other gifts. All must be seen to be appreciated. If you want something, buy it immediately because we cannot promise it will be on the shelf when you return. We are willing to hold an item for a customer for 24 hours maximum. Please give your name and phone number to the volunteer. By patronizing the Campus Shop you are supporting the Be-nevolent Care Fund and the Pastoral Care Fund. The Campus Shop is a “gathering place” so visit, browse and shop. We have a wonderful assortment of both commercial and handcrafted (Ann Flournoy) Halloween cards. You are encouraged to shop early for the best selection. Our Sale Cart continues and is ever changing. You need to check it out frequently, or you will miss the best bargains. Many items would make lovely Christmas gifts. If you need a “burst of energy” in the afternoon, we are open from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm and have a wonderful selection of coffee, tea and hot cocoa along with a variety of cookies, pastries, candy bars, peanuts and ice cream. After a workout in the pool or fitness center, drop by the Campus Shop for a refreshing bottle of juice. Cran-berry juice, apple juice, grape juice, orange juice and low sodium V8 (get your veggies) are available for the very reasonable price of $1. The regular and chocolate covered pecans and cashews have been ordered and will arrive in November. Mark your calendar to make your purchase in the Campus Shop. When making a purchase in the Campus Shop with a Gift Certificate, please notify the volunteer on duty since those purchases are not rung on the cash register. Thanks. For the convenience of all our volunteers, the November volunteer signup sheet will be in the Campus shop on October 1. The Campus Shop needs volunteers. Contact Joan at 247-1828 if you are interested in being trained. Currently we have five volunteers from South Campus, Nine from Central Campus, four from Lake-view Villas, six from North Campus and five from the Community. Not all are active for various reasons.

THE CONNECTION

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise, developed by Joseph Pilates, which emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support effi-cient graceful movement.

The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. It was originally used as a rehabilitation program for prisoners of war and was later found to be of great benefit to anyone seeking a higher level of fitness. The work was kept alive over the years by a small group of Joseph Pilates’ devoted students until just a few years ago, when exercise science caught up to the principles that Pilates had been teaching all along, and now we enjoy the rich evolution of the Pilates work that we have today.

It seems like everyone is either doing Pilates or interested in starting a Pilates exercise pro-gram. One of the best things about the Pilates method is that it works so well for a wide range of people. Athletes and dancers love it, as do SENIORS, women rebounding from pregnancy, and people who are at various stages of physical rehabilitation.

Modification is the key to Pilates exercise success with a variety of populations. Pilates exercis-es may include standing, kneeling, resting on a mat/chair or in some cases a Pilates reformer (unique piece of exercise equipment designed for Pilates use only). Exercises are developed with modifications that can make a workout safe and challenging for a person at any level. Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. When the core muscles are strong and doing their job, as they are trained to do in Pilates, they work in tandem with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement.
