In God we trust?

We’ve all heard the phrase “In God we trust,” it’s even

printed on our money, but do we really trust God in

every area of our lives? We trust Him with our families,

health, problems & issues we face, even with our

personal salvation; but when it comes to our money,

well many of us doubt that He understands finances.

God wants us to trust Him in every area of our lives,

including our finances. In fact the Bible has a lot to say

about money. There are more verses dealing with the

subject of money & possessions than with prayer &

faith combined. God knows the number one competition

He faces for our heart is not the devil; His number one

competition is money & possessions, our stuff. That’s

why He addresses it so often in the Bible. That’s why

we’re going to look at God’s financial plan and ask ourselves

the question, do I really trust God in every area of my life,

including my finances?

Keeping Priorities in Line by John Ed Mathison

There was a family with several kids, and the father

was an incredibly talented man—everything he

touched turned to God. He got raise after raise, after

raise, and they moved out of one

house and into another, and out of that

house and into another, and they

ended up in a big house by the lake.

Along the way, he found less and less

time for family devotions. Then he

gave up coming to Sunday worship.

He just didn’t have the time.

From the outside, the family looked

like a total success; but on the inside,

it was falling apart. One of their

teenage daughters came to visit me one day, and I’ll

never forget it.

She was crying and here’s what she said: “You

know what’s happened to my family? We used to

pray together as a family. We used to love each

other. We used to come to church together. Now

we don’t. Daddy doesn’t have time.” She said,

“John Ed, I want you to pray for something

unusual. I want you to pray that my daddy will lose

his job and we have to go back to the way things

used to be.”

I wish I could tell you that the story had a happy

ending, but it doesn’t. That girl’s father

did end up losing his job, but is was

due to the fact that he had become an

alcoholic. He was so driven by the

pursuit of money, that he drove his

family away and ended up losing

everything he had.

See, when we hold so tightly to money

that it becomes the most important

thing in our lives, everything else gets

out of whack. Matthew 6:33 instructs

us to make the Kingdom of God our primary

concern, and when anything else takes first place,

it becomes an idol. And we know how God feels

about us having idols. They’re listed in the “thou

shalt nots” of the Ten Commandments.

One of the ways to loosen our grip on money is to

give it back to God. Giving reminds us that God

has given us everything we have anyway.

Seek first his kingdom and his

righteousness, and all these things will be given to

you as well. Matthew 6:33
