Colonial transformation contextualized the cultural articulation of a new set of values, prejudices and tastes for the colonial middle-class. This middle-class ensured that cuisine was not commoditized and remained domestic and embedded in the material culture of Bengal. Globalization and India'sEconomic IntegrationBaldev Raj Nayar

This book shows how globalization's pressuresfavoring efficiency paradoxically induced the state topush for consolidation on a pan-Indian scale in thearea of fiscal federalism and to advance the cause ofthe common market through reforming the indirect taxsystem; meanwhile, the state has pressed forward withsocial inclusiveness as never before in its economicplanning. For another, the market, too, has beeninstrumental, because of its widened scope and itsinherently expanding character, in strengtheningeconomic integration through trade expansion, diffusion of industry, and increased inter-statemigration. Nayar's groundbreaking work will intereststudents, scholars, and specialists of India, South Asia, globalization, and political economy.

Science and Technologyin Contemporary ChinaInterrogating Policies and Progress

Varaprasad S. Dolla

Chinese science and technology (S&T) policy, as asubset of the Open Door Policy that Deng Xiaopinglaunched in 1978, marked the completion of threedecades of reform in 2008. The cumulative outcome ofthese gradualist and yet fundamental reforms in S&Tpolicy is a remarkable advancement of S&T progressin China. This book is an imperative to revisit andinterrogate the nature and scope of Chinese S&Tpolicy and progress.

The S&T policy changes in post-Mao China cannot becomplete without a historical narrative and analysis ofS&T in its pre-policy (prior to 1850) and policy (since1850 when Qing rulers began to promote S&T withfragmented policies) periods. Therefore, it discussesthe historical context of the development of S&T inChina. The text is divided into three parts. The first partconsiders both the macro and micro issues pertainingto S&T policy in general and S&T policy in particular. The second part highlights the historical narrative ofChinese S&T policy as it has a key role in the evolutionof contemporary S&T architecture. The third partdiscusses three focal components of the Chinese S&Tsystem each representing state, society andinternational systems – the organizational structurerepresenting the state; the research systemrepresenting society; and technology acquisitionrepresenting the international system with seriousimplications for China.

Trade-Related Investment MeasuresTheory and Applications

Chi-Chur Chao & Eden S. H. Yu

This unique book makes a contribution to the deeperunderstanding of various trade-related investmentmeasures (TRIMs). The issues have been largelyinspired by the use of trade policies on foreigninvestment adopted in China and many other nationsfrom the 1960s to the 1990s. Building upon theexisting literature and the authors' own work, the 20chapters in the book examine, using several versionsof general-equilibrium frameworks, resource allocationand welfare effects of both trade-related investmentmeasures and investment-related trade/environmentalmeasures. Traditional and duality microeconomic toolsand modelling techniques have been extensivelyutilised in analysing various real-world, investment andenvironmental issues, especially those encountered indeveloping economies. Policy implications regardingoptimal trade, investment and environmental policiesthat emerged from the analyses are also provided.

This book is self-contained in applications of tradetheories and related general-equilibrium modellingtechniques. It may be used as an advanced textbookin trade theory and policy as well as a reference bookfor policy makers, professional practitioners andacademic researchers in designing trade policies.

A Descriptive Study of Bengali WordsNiladri Sekhar Dash

The book is about the study of modern Bengali wordsbased on the data obtained from a corpus of writtentexts. The corpus contains more than five million wordsof written text samples collected from hundred subjectdomains published within 1981 to 2000. The authoranalyses Bengali words from empirical point of view tounderstand their form and function in the language. Italso deals with the form and function of Bengali wordsin a systematic manner from the perspective ofstructure and use of words to understand how Bengaliwords are formed and used.

The book provides, for the first time, some importantfindings about the general patterns of use of Bengalimorpheme. It sheds new light on the form and functionof morphemes in construction of words in thelanguage. Bengali single word units (both inflected andnon-inflected) are analyzed from the perspective oftheir structure or surface forms. The book alsoprovides a solid empirical support for developing toolsand systems for morphological analysis, morphologicalgeneration, lexical decomposition and lexicalcomposition for the language for machine learning andlanguage teaching.

Real AnalysisTheory of Measure and Integration

J. Yeh

This book presents a unified treatise of the theory ofmeasure and integration. In the setting of a generalmeasure space, every concept is defined precisely andevery theorem is presented with a clear and completeproof with all the relevant details. Counter-examplesare provided to show that certain conditions in thehypothesis of a theorem cannot be simply dropped. The dependence of a theorem on earlier theorems isexplicitly indicated in the proof, not only to facilitatereading but also to delineate the structure of thetheory. The precision and clarity of presentation makethe book an ideal textbook for a graduate course inreal analysis while the wealth of topics treated alsomake the book a valuable reference work formathematicians.

The book is also very helpful to graduate students instatistics and electrical engineering, two disciplinesthat apply measure theory.

Differential Operators on Spaces ofVariable IntegrabilityDavid E. Edmunds, Jan Lang & Osvaldo Mendez

The theory of Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces withvariable integrability is experiencing a steadyexpansion, and is the subject of much vigorousresearch by functional analysts, function-spaceanalysts and specialists in nonlinear analysis. Thesespaces have attracted attention not only because oftheir intrinsic mathematical importance as natural, interesting examples of non-rearrangement-invariantfunction spaces but also in view of their applications, which include the mathematical modeling ofelectrorheological fluids and image restoration.

The main focus of this book is to provide a solidfunctional-analytic background for the study ofdifferential operators on spaces with variableintegrability. It includes some novel stabilityphenomena which the authors have recentlydiscovered.

At the present time, this is the only book which focusessystematically on differential operators on spaces withvariable integrability. The authors present a concise, natural introduction to the basic material and steadilymove toward differential operators on these spaces, leading the reader quickly to current research topics.

Introduction to Spectral Theory andInverse Problem on AsymptoticallyHyperbolic ManifoldsHiroshi Isozaki & Yaroslav Kurylev

This manuscript is devoted to a rigorous and detailedexposition of the spectral theory and associatedforward and inverse scattering problems for theLaplace-Beltrami operators on asymptoticallyhyperbolic manifolds. Based upon the classicalstationary scattering theory in Rn, the key point of theapproach is the generalized Fourier transform, whichserves as the basic tool to introduce and analyse thetime-dependent wave operators and the S-matrix. Thecrucial role is played by the characterization of thespace of the scattering solutions for the Helmholtzequations utilizing a properly defined Besov-typespace. After developing the scattering theory, wedescribe, for some cases, the inverse scattering on theasymptotically hyperbolic manifolds by adopting, forthe considered case, the boundary control method forinverse problems.

The manuscript is aimed at graduate students andyoung mathematicians interested in spectral andscattering theories, analysis on hyperbolic manifoldsand theory of inverse problems. We try to make it self-consistent and, to a large extent, not dependent on theexisting treatises on these topics. To our bestknowledge, it is the first comprehensive description ofthese theories in the context of the asymptoticallyhyperbolic manifolds.

The homological machinery isalso supported by Cohen–Macaulay rings and depth. In Chapters 4–6 the methods of injective modules,Matlis duality and local cohomology are discussed.Chapters 7–9 are not so standard and introduce thereader to the generalizations of modules to complexesof modules. Some of Professor Iversen's results aregiven in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 is about Serre'sintersection conjecture. The graded case is fullyexposed. The last chapter introduces the reader toFitting ideals and McRae invariants.

Theta Functions and KnotsRazvan Gelca

This book presents the relationship between classicaltheta functions and knots. It is based on a novel ideaof Razvan Gelca and Alejandro Uribe, which convertsWeil's representation of the Heisenberg group on thetafunctions to a knot theoretical framework, by giving atopological interpretation to a certain inducedrepresentation. It also explains how the discreteFourier transform can be related to 3- and 4-dimensional topology.

Theta Functions and Knots can be read in twoperspectives. Readers with an interest in thetafunctions or knot theory can learn how the two arerelated. Those interested in Chern–Simons theory willfind here an introduction using the simplest case, thatof abelian Chern–Simons theory. Moreover, theconstruction of abelian Chern–Simons theory is basedentirely on quantum mechanics and not on quantumfield theory as it is usually done.

Both the theory of theta functions and low dimensionaltopology are presented in detail, in order to underlinehow deep the connection between these twofundamental mathematical subjects is. Hence the bookis self-contained with a unified presentation. It issuitable for an advanced graduate course, as well asfor self-study.

Crystal Symmetry, Lattice Vibrations, andOptical Spectroscopy of SolidsA Group Theoretical Approach

Baldassare Di Bartolo & Richard C. Powell

This book provides a comprehensive treatment of thetwo fundamental aspects of a solid that determine itsphysical properties: lattice structure and atomicvibrations (phonons). The elements of group theory areextensively developed and used as a tool to show howthe symmetry of a solid and the vibrations of the atomsin the solid lead to the physical properties of thematerial. The uses of different types of spectroscopytechniques that elucidate the lattice structure of a solidand the normal vibrational modes of the atoms in thesolid are described. The interaction of light with solids(optical spectroscopy) is described in detail includinghow lattice symmetry and phonons affect the spectralproperties and how spectral properties provideinformation about the material's symmetry and normalmodes of lattice vibrations. The effects of point defects(doping) on the lattice symmetry and atomic vibrationsand thus the spectral properties are discussed andused to show how material symmetry and latticevibrations are critical in determining the properties ofsolid state lasers.

Canonical Quantum GravityFundamentals and Recent Developments

Francesco Cianfrani, Orchidea Maria Lecian,Matteo Lulli & Giovanni Montani

This book aims to present a pedagogical and self-consistent treatment of the canonical approach toQuantum Gravity, starting from its original formulationto the most recent developments in the field.

We start with an innovative and enlighteningintroduction to the formalism and concepts on whichGeneral Relativity has been built, giving all theinformation necessary in the later analysis. A briefsketch of the Standard Cosmological Model describingthe Universe evolution is also given alongside theanalysis of the inflationary mechanism. Afterdeepening the fundamental properties of constraineddynamic systems, the Lagrangian approach to theEinsteinian Theory is presented in some detail, underlining the parallelism with non-Abelian gaugetheories. Then, the basic concepts of the canonicalapproach to Quantum Mechanics are provided, focusing on all those formulations which are relevantfor the Canonical Quantum Gravity problem. TheHamiltonian formulation of General Relativity and itsconstrained structure is then analyzed by comparingdifferent formulations. The resulting quantumdynamics, described by the Wheeler–DeWitt equation,is fully discussed in order to outline its merits andlimits. Afterwards, the reformulation of CanonicalQuantum Gravity in terms of the Ashtekar–Barbero–Immirzi variables is faced by a detailed discussion ofthe resulting Loop Quantum Gravity Theory. Finally, weprovide a consistent picture of canonical QuantumCosmology by facing the main features of theWheeler–DeWitt equation for the homogeneousBianchi models and then by a detailed treatment ofLoop Quantum Cosmology, including very recentdevelopments.

An Elementary Introductionto Queueing SystemsWah Chun Chan

The book aims to highlight the fundamental conceptsof queueing systems. It starts with the mathematicalmodeling of the arrival process (input) of customers tothe system. It is shown that the arrival process can bedescribed mathematically either by the number ofarrival customers in a fixed time interval, or by theinterarrival time between two consecutive arrivals. Inthe analysis of queueing systems, the bookemphasizes the importance of exponential service time

of customers. With this assumption of exponentialservice time, the analysis can be simplified by usingthe birth and death process as a model. Manyqueueing systems can then be analyzed by choosingthe proper arrival rate and service rate. This facilitatesthe analysis of many queueing systems.

Drawing on the author's 30 years of experience inteaching and research, the book uses a simple yeteffective model of thinking to illustrate the fundamentalprinciples and rationale behind complex mathematicalconcepts. Explanations of key concepts are provided, while avoiding unnecessary details or extensivemathematical formulas. As a result, the text is easy toread and understand for students wishing to masterthe core principles of queueing theory.

Special Integral Functions Used inWireless Communications TheoryNikolay V. Savischenko

This monograph summarizes the special functionsneeded in the performance analysis of wirelesscommunications systems.

On the basis of special Gaussian and Owen functions, the methodology for the calculation of the relationshipfor symbol and bit error probabilities with coherentreception, for the two-dimensional multi-positionalsignal constructions in communications channel withdeterministic parameters and additive white Gaussiannoise (AWGN), was developed. To explain theconcepts, examples are provided after themathematical proofs to illustrate how the theoremscould be applied; this includes symbol and bit errorprobability formulas receiving for present signalconstructions (QAM, PSK, APSK and HEX), and errorprobability dependencies from signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).

There are many books in communications theorydealing with several topics covered in this monograph, but none has consolidated all error probabilitycalculations in a single book. This book thereforeserves a very niche area.

This text is written for graduate students, researchers, and professionals specializing in wirelesscommunications and electrical engineering; dealingwith probability and statistics, approximation, andanalysis & differential equations.

Medicine

The Theory of Chinese MedicineA Modern Interpretation

Hai Hong

This path-breaking book reinterprets Chinese medicineusing the approach of the philosophy of science in amanner that strikes common ground with biomedicalscience. It strips Chinese medical theory of themystique and metaphysical pretentions that too oftenplague the discipline, presenting this theory as beingderived from empirical observations and clinicalfindings. Concepts like qi and phlegm and vital organslike the shen (kidney) are interpreted, not as physicalentities with defined measurable properties, but asconstructs to facilitate the application of models fordiagnosis and therapy. The author evaluates the five-element model and the diagnostic-therapeuticparadigm of Chinese medical syndromes, andsuggests how these heuristic models can be subjectedto clinical trials. Principles governing the use of herbal, acupuncture, tuina and qigong therapies areelucidated and critically examined. Written for medicalprofessionals, philosophers of medicine and discerningreaders interested in alternative therapies, the bookalso has practical chapters on the placebo effect andChinese medical treatment of chronic illnesses, and auseful compilation of common Chinese herbs andformulations.

CSIR–NISTADS

Policy-makers often come across the question of howprogress and investment in science, technology andinnovation (STI) can increase employment andupgrade skills and knowledge base in India. Theparadox is that while STI has the potential to inventnew avenues of economic growth sometimes evenwith increasing returns, the general forces unleashedby STI displace labour and automate a large part ofhuman skills and knowledge. Such a paradox has agreat impact on a country like India which is strugglingwith the ever-increasing pressure of labour force, unemployment and economic inequality. It is to benoted that the 12th Five Year Plan has made inclusivegrowth concomitant of employment generation andskill development a top priority.

In this context, India: Science and Technology, Volume3 focuses on the state of affairs in India through thelens of employment generation, upgradation of skillsand several dimensions of the Indian science, technology and innovation (STI). Similar to the earlierreports, the book is organised into four themes: (a)S&T Human Resources, (b) S&T and Industry, (c) S&TOutputs and (d) Rural India: S&T for Skills andEmployment. While the content and approach of thefour themes differ from each other, employment andskill development and its inter-linkage with science, technology and innovation are the important focalpoints of discussion.

Time in Powers of TenNatural Phenomena and Their Timescales

Gerard 't Hooft & Stefan Vandoren;Translated by: Saskia Eisberg- 't Hooft

With a Foreword by Steven Weinberg

In this richly illustrated book, Nobel Laureate Gerard 'tHooft and Theoretical Physicist Stefan Vandorendescribe the enormous diversity of natural phenomenathat take place at different time scales.

In the tradition of the bestseller Powers of Ten, theauthors zoom in and out in time, each step with afactor of ten. Starting from one second, time scales areenlarged until processes are reached that take muchlonger than the age of the universe. After the largestpossible eternities, the reader is treated to the shortestand fastest phenomena known. Then the authorsincrease with powers of ten, until again the second isreached at the end of the book.

At each time scale, interesting natural phenomenaoccur, spread over all scientific disciplines: orbital androtation periods of planets and stars, decay times ofelementary particles and atoms, biological rhythmsand evolution processes, but also the differentgeological time scales.
