Dear Providence Church Family and Friends, Jesus teaches us to pray -- together -- to God, Our Father, that His Name be hallowed, His Kingdom come, and His will be done. In response, God commands that we unite in Christ’s Kingdom mission. He saves and anoints us as One Body in His One Spirit, witnessing and working in Christ-like love for our neighbors and the world. In this month of Worldwide Communion Sunday, God is pouring out Good News through Providence – including through remarkably deep and diverse local, national, and international mission outreach. Even in just the past few weeks: (1) We have engaged and enrolled more mission-scholarship-supported children and youth in our Wednesday night LOGOS and YROC ministries than ever before. (2) We have assisted through emergency benevolent help: (a) a military serviceman returning from Iraq and needing to travel cross-country to reach his fiancee; (b) local families and individuals facing unemployment challenges; and (c) ongoing key local ministries such as Deep Well and Volunteers in Medicine. (3) We are providing a desperately-needed cargo van for the relief and recovery mission work of the Lakeshore Baptist Church in their ongoing post- Hurricane-Katrina work in the Gulf Coast. God brought this about through a combination of (a) our ongoing mission relationship with the Lakeshore Church, (b) the mission work and resulting reports from Providence Youth Betsy Serral this summer, and (c) the response of Providence mission giving. (4) We heard great updates from Dr. Frank Dimmock and his son Moses in September. Frank is a missionary with Presbyterian Church World Missions, and we have supported the medical mission work of Frank and his wife, Nancy, for over fifteen years. Among their many ministries in African nations, the Dimmocks initiated the crisis nursery and feeding centers now coordinated through the Ministry of Hope in Malawi. (5) We also celebrated in September moving testimonies from our summer mission team that worked with the Ministry of Hope in Malawi – including a Sunday night dinner replicating the simple food served at the feeding centers. Now, this month, we commission and send another mission team to Malawi. (6) We continued our partnership with our many other mission leaders from the larger Church, who lead and equip Good News ministry in the growing Church throughout the world. Among the mission leaders recently with us on the Providence campus was the remarkable Dr. Fred Amoah- Darko of Ambassadors for Christ International. Fred recently spent a day with members of our Mission Committee and shared inspiring updates from his recent work of equipping pastors and church evangelists in Ghana, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. In addition, Fred counseled and prayed with Pete Barbano and Phil Smith, members of our October mission team to Malawi. Enjoy reading the rest of this Providence Today and the further news of God’s anointing of our mission ministry in so many ways. All praise to God Our Father! They will come with weeping; They will pray as I bring them back.I will lead them beside streams of water

On a level path where they will not stumble. Jeremiah 31:9A

Are you in one of life’s painful valleys? The book of Jeremiah, chapter 31, isour loving Lord, our God of the universe, proclaiming, “They will return from theland of the enemy. So there is hope for your future” (verses 16B-17A)

In verse 9 above, our all-powerful God sets out His plan to lift you up! 1. Pray to Him as He works in your life and your circumstances. 2. He will walk beside you, leading you out of the valley of suffering to ever-flowing life-changing streams of water. God has placed His hand on many here at Providence to become Stephen Ministers. He willwalk with you, through them, to restore you to the glorious person He created you to be. If your load has become too heavy, PRAY. Pray, confess your sins, and thank God that He hasprovided someone to share your burden with in Christian love. To get your partner for your journey back, call Jack Dempsey (686-6270) or Patty Schroeder(671-2481). God absolutely does care and you are not alone!

Friends of the Future is holding a gathering Saturday evening, 6 p.m. (to include light dinner)October 31, at Joe and Susan Patton’s home, 36 Blue Heron Point. You Are InvitedProvidence Brothers,

Has the Holy Spirit been nudging you? Have you been feeling that youneed to be working on your relationship with Christ? Are you confident inyour salvation? Would it help you to have a band of brothers to help youalong the way? Please join us beginning Monday October 5 at 6 p.m. in theMills Building for a number of terrific opportunities to grow in your faith andbuild relationships with other men of faith.

    Course Descriptions

Basic Training - 34 weeksA cornerstone small group study that equips men to run the race for personal Godliness and globalimpact. 2 hours +/- of study per week plus 2 hours in your small group working through the applicationof the learning in our own life.

The Ways of God – Henry Blackaby: 7 weeksGod’s ways are different from our ways! You can start in Genesis and go all the way throughRevelation, and you will find that whenever God moves, it is not like anything you or I would havechosen. And yet, time and again, God chooses to work through His people to accomplish His purposes. This study will focus on the greatness of God & direction for living a godly life.

The Holiness of God – RC Sproul: 11 weeksAs one theologian said, if it were proper to speak of one attribute of God as being more central andfundamental than another, the scriptural emphasis on the holiness of God would seem to justify itsselection. This book/study is designed to help you gain a true biblical concept of the holiness of God,to understand how His holiness affects each of us, and how we should respond in our daily lives to Hisholiness.

The Purpose Driven Life – Rick Warren: 7 weeksThis book and video study will help you understand why you are alive & God’s amazing plan for you. Itfocuses on life’s most important question: What on earth am I here for? Knowing God’s purpose forcreating you will reduce stress, focus energy, simplify decisions, give meaning to your life, and, mostimportant, prepare you for eternity.

Bible Study – On-GoingCasual and meaningful on-going study led by Elder Fred Hoaglin. The group helps to determine thebooks/gospels to study. Participants rotate reading text & then open discussion focused on learning &application: personal, family, work, community in today’s culture.

There may be alternative times for some of these studies based on demand. Please contact PaulCifaldi (301-6640) or Bob Linneman (842-7542) with question, for more information and to sign up priorto October 5th.

    Adult Christian Education10:10 Sunday Mornings

October is the second month in our third trimester of study for this year. The theme: God – The Father. Please note our additional study sessions as we work together as a Living Body of Christ to equip everydisciple for every good work to which we are called:

    Fellowship Hall

October 4:Dr. Martin Lifer will continue with his presentation of September 6 where he not only gave an overviewof the Third Trimester Theme but also highlighted and updated a series of key events affecting PPC.He asked members to respond to him with questions on topics about which they would like him toexpand so he can focus on items of most concern to the congregation.

October 11, 18 and 25: God the Father Speaks!Elder Ed Kappus will continue with a five week study titled, God the Father Speaks! Is the OldTestament relevant today for you and for me? Together we will cover six key Old Testament scripturesand how they apply today to us personally and to Providence Church. Sometimes God the Fatherspoke to His people directly, often through His prophets. We will look at Jeremiah 13:11, Exodus20:1-3, Micah 6:6-8, Leviticus 11:44, Deuteronomy 30:15-20 and Joshua 24:15. In each case, as Godspoke to us over an Old Testament span of 1500 years, His words speak to you and me today.

Mills Building -- Room 5The ‘Young Adult & Young at Heart’ group led by Robbie and Don Leech continue with their study ofthe book of Jonah. It is never too late to join this enthusiastic group of believers.

Mills Building – ChapelOctober 11, 18, and 25: Reviewing Some Practical Concepts to Effective Christian Living will be thetitle of a new six part study led by Howard Wright. The topics for the first three weeks will be:

How we can know for sure we are secure in our faith and what to watch out for in our walk withGod.We look to the Bible as our Guide and Mainstay in life and study where it came from, its trials, its translations, and its preservation. Is it reliable in this day and age? How can we trustsomething written so long ago? Is it relevant today? We will observe “talk to me and hear from me,” as we look at the logical steps to practical praying.

Mills Building – ParlorThe Parenting Class meets in a small group study of Max Lucado’s book: The Touch of the Master’sHand. God loves us just the way we are, but wants us to be more like Jesus. Join us to learn how Godcalls us.

Are you carrying around questions about your Christian faith--or knowsomeone who is? Our Alpha program will begin in January and run forapproximately twelve weeks on Monday evenings. If you need answers, plannow to set aside those evenings, and pray about whom the Lord may wantyou to ask to come.

TITHING is TITHING....IT IS ALL THE LORD'S MONEY!!! Our church has a committee called Friends of the Future. It is a program about estate and willplanning. If we practice tithing 10% to the Lord, while we are alive, shouldn't we also provide in our will10% of our estate for the Lord too? Most people want to provide for their children and grandchildrenand that is good, however, if we believe in tithing, then we should also prepare our wills for 10% to ourchurch for the Lord's continued work after we are gone. It is still His money that He provided for uswhile alive on earth or in Heaven. This part of giving still enables us to provide for our families but stilltithe our estate the 10% to our Lord. Let's add a new provision in our wills and be obedient to our Lordin our giving of all our tithes.

PROVIDENCE WELCOMES FRANK & MOSES DIMMOCKAt a Sept. 6 Mission Committee dinner, Wade Cloyd shared howProvidence's first Mission Committee, headed by Rick Murray, beganto support Frank & Nancy Dimmock, more than 17 years ago. At thattime, they were a young couple with 3 small children, 2 birth childrenand Moses, who they adopted in Malawi. Since then, they haveadopted 5 more children. Frank told how they started the CrisisNursery and joined the Ministry of Hope in serving the Lord throughcaring for abandoned babies and orphans. During the SundaySchool hour, Frank gave a presentation on his work as a PCUSAmissionary throughout Africa. It was hard to comprehend how he

could accomplish all the things he does in so many countries. He is truly a "Man of God." What ablessing it was to meet Moses, a senior at UNC, Pembroke and an aspiring artist. He will, no doubt, follow in his parents footsteps.

MALAWI AFRICAN DINNERAbout 100 people met to hear about the July Malawi Team's trip. The team members shared stories about their time at the CrisisNursery, Feeding Centers and the Mobil Health Unit. Everyone was"treated" to a dinner of polenta, beans and greens - no meat, nocookies and no lemonade. This is what the children at the feedingcenters eat everyday, once a day and it is their only meal. What agreat lesson on how spoiled we all are! The October team will leaveOct. 5th, so keep Mary Jo Carlson, her daughter, DeeAnne, PhilSmith and Pete Barbano in your prayers.

LAKESHORE GETS A NEW VANTHANKS TO BETSY SERRAL

Betsy Serral returned from Lakeshore, Mississippi, where sheworked all summer helping rebuild Katrina damage. Sheinformed the Mission Committee that the van Lakeshore Baptistused to transport supplies and volunteers had finally died. Itwas her dream to be able to provide a new van to helpthe people who still did not have homes. With the help of BobShirley, a van was purchased, and is ready to deliver to PastorDon at Lakeshore. Thanks, Betsy!

FRED AMOAH-DARKO VISITSFred Amoah-Darko, our missionary from Ghana, paid a short visit toProvidence on Sept. 21st. He updated us on his travels throughoutAfrica, planting churches, training and discipling Christian Pastors andspreading the gospel to youth and adults. What an inspiration he was!As Fred returned to the office after lunch, he was able to talk with PhilSmith and Pete Barbano about their upcoming trip to Malawi. He andMartin prayed with Phil and Pete.

    SAVE THE DATE!!NOVEMBER 14, 2009

A WORLDWIDE DAY OFEXTRAORDINARY PRAYER FOR

    CHILDREN AND SCHOOLS

Summer is over! Can you believe we are “back to school”? Hurricane season is winding downand, thankfully, we have not had to even talk about evacuation from our little slice of paradise we callhome here on Hilton Head Island. But where we are doesn’t just depend on the time of year or eventhe place we occupy. Much of where we are depends on the people around us. Think of the times youhave found yourself with someone who went on to have a great impact on your life or you a great impacton his or her life. That’s “positioning”! Positioning happens when God puts you with people through noforethought of your own for reasons of God’s own. The jailer in Philippi was just doing his job never imagining that when Paul and Silas were throwninto his jail they would lead him to faith in Jesus (Acts 16). God positioned Paul and Silas with the jailer!Think of God’s work in your life as the ultimate GPS – God’s Positioning System! Now that October ishere, check your GPS plan. A brand new Anchor Group is forming and perhaps it’s the positioning you need in your life righthere, right now! The mission of Anchor Groups at Providence is to reinforce and strengthen membersin their spiritual and personal relationship with God and one another in order to Cause God Joy bydeveloping and equipping devoted and contagious Disciples of Christ. Anyone interested in joining thisnew group or just learning more about the small group ministry at Providence is asked to contact JayPruehs, 363-2532, or Dave Kilgus, 681-6260. Check your GPS!

From November 5, 2009 thru November 7, 2009 the Presbyterian Men of the Church (MOC) will behosting the 32nd Annual Ethical Decision Making and Moral Values Symposium. This year, the event willbe hosted at Hilton Head Island’s First Presbyterian Church. Each year, four upper-class students are chosen from 20 selected south eastern U.S. regionalcolleges to come to Hilton Head to attend this highly acclaimed Symposium. The students are accompaniedby a faculty member who also actively participates. The objective of this extracurricular program is to helpthe participants recognize and understand contemporary ethical issues and how to factor these insights intotheir own decision making. This is done through a series of small discussion groups considering real lifecase studies involving ethical issues. By working in small groups, it is possible for everyone to optimizetheir contributions to the discussion. The small groups are facilitated by highly experienced volunteers, predominantly from Providenceand First Presbyterian Churches. The students and faculty participants are typically evenly split betweenmen and women. As such, the Men of the Church have invited some prominent women to act as facilitators. We are pleased to have two highly competent women join our ranks this year. This year, there are 20 colleges that have accepted the MOC’s invitation and have agreed to participate. They are:

Catawba College, Charleston Southern University, College Of the Ozarks, Columbia College,Davidson, Davis and Elkins College, Eckerd College, Erskine College, Flagler College,

Hampden-Sydney College, King College, Mary Baldwin College, Montreat College,Mount Union College, Presbyterian College, Queen’s University of Charlotte,

St. Andrews Presbyterian College, USC – Beaufort, Warren Wilson, Wofford College

The program gets started on Thursday evening with a catered dinner followedby a keynote speaker. This year’s speaker is DAVID EKEDAHL. Dave was born andraised in Pittsburgh, Pa. He graduated from Bucknell University in 1956 with a BA inEconomics. He was commissioned a US Army Transportation Corps officer andserved on active duty and in the Reserves for eight years. Dave began work with GEFinancial Services in 1957 in Pittsburgh. He worked at GEFS for 38 years, retiring in1995 as Chairman, Global Consumer Finance. During his business career andretirement Dave has been involved in several communities thru Hospice Care, StLuke’s Lifeworks, United Way, Preble Street Project, HH Symphony Orchestra,Second Helpings, First Presbyterian Church Day School, Volunteers in Medicine,Habitat for Humanity, Deep Well Project, Katrina Relief and grade school tutoring. He served 18 years as Trustee at Bucknell and is currently Trustee Emeritus. He isan active Elder at First Presbyterian Church on Hilton Head. The students also get to enjoy the hospitality of host families for dinner on Friday evening. Inaddition, the students are able to enjoy some of Hilton Head’s many recreational opportunities. All of this would not be possible without many hours of planning and hard work by members of theMOC. Likewise, the program would not be successful without the many volunteers and businesses thatoffer their time, homes, business, and financial resources. If you are wondering what you can do to benefit this cause, there are many options. You can:

The world needs better leaders. Help inspire a college student to see that it is possible to be ethicaland successful while making morally strong decisions! by Len Stubbs Prayer: The Ultimate Open Microphone

We are commanded to pray unto Him without ceasing. Hewants us to call on him everyday, all day. God's word ispower. God the Father instructs us that "We have not because weask not." Prayer is the foundation of our relationship with the Father.Without it, we are cut off from the deepening of our relationshipwith, and love of, God. The truth is that through prayer no evil cancome against us. You may prefer to pray silently or openly eitheror both are fine. The key is that daily we have anopen microphone to God and no one can prevent our growingand maturing relationship with our Father unless we allow it.Godly living and prayer is our personal choice. Prayer is powerful. Prayer heals, prayer blesses others, prayer changes hearts of oppressors, prayer heals the sick andwounded, prayer brings the dead to life, prayer rids afflictions ofthe body. Through prayer and through honest faith our life and familycan be assured of changed hearts. Hearts like that of Jesus. InMatthew 11:29 we are instructed about the heart of Jesus "Takemy yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yoursouls." God answers prayers in His time and by His will. God grants us an open door policy and an openmicrophone 24/7/365. During open hours we are able to pray unto Him whenever we feel theprompting, need or desire. If we ask of our Heavenly Father, we shall receive. Scripture teaches us that there is nothing more powerful than a person at prayer. Nothingovercomes any obstacle or receives any greater gift than prayer. Indeed, the depth of our personalrelationship depends on our interaction with the Holy Spirit in prayer. Prayer is the cornerstone for both Providence Church and for our personal relationship with ourLord and Savior. Great, exciting and Christ centered events are happening at Providence. Our Lord and Savioropens his house up each and every day for us and waits anxiously for us to join him in discussion. TheSanctuary is open during business hours each and every day. Should you have a prayer request and are unable to personally join us, prayer cards areavailable in the church office. We are always available to pray with and for you. Plan today to start or end your day receiving and being a blessing. Consider stepping up to themicrophone for a "Just you and Me" discussion with your heavenly Father.
