Reports about Yellowstone bears, wolves, and birds published online

MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Yellowstone National Park recently published online three reports from 2018 about bear management, wolves, and birds. Each annual report focuses largely on the health of these wildlife populations. Topics from the Bear Management Program Annual Report include bear sightings, management of roadside bear viewing, bear mortalities, bear-human conflicts, bear-proof food storage locker installation and more. Yellowstone’s Bear Biologist Kerry Gunther said, “There were few bear-human conflicts inside of the park in 2018; however, managing visitors that stopped to view and photograph bears foraging in roadside meadows and thus creating large bear jams was a considerable management challenge.” Topics from the Bird Project Annual Report include monitoring of raptors, wetland birds, songbirds and near-passerine, fall migration, raven movements, and noteworthy and rare bird sightings. Biologist Lauren Walker said, “We used five methods to monitor breeding songbirds in 2018: point counts in willow stands and mature forests, transects through plots in sagebrush steppe, a banding station, and the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). We recorded 35 songbird species within three willow growth types and captured at least 32 species at our banding station in a willow-lined riparian corridor. Observers recorded 24 species in mature forests and 29 species in sagebrush steppe. We also observed over 3,100 individuals belonging to 82 species along three BBS routes in the park.” Topics from the Wolf Project Annual Report include pup survival, wolf pack summaries, and using radio collars to study wolves. Doug Smith, Yellowstone Wolf Project leader says, “In 2018 we noted a drop in pup numbers, however there were no intra-species wolf killings, which is usually the reason for the most wolf mortality. This year marks a 10-year period of relatively stable wolf numbers. While the reasons for this are unknown, a relatively stable elk population is likely a large factor.”

Yellowstone to conduct prescribed fire to restore native vegetation • Yellowstone wildland fire staff will conduct a 16-acre prescribed fire on one day between October 16-24,

weather dependent.• The burn site is located in the northern section of the park, three miles northwest of Gardiner, Montana,

and about a mile east of Stephens Creek.• The day of ignition, smoke may be visible in the afternoon for 3 to 6 hours. • The prescribed fire will consume 90% of the seeds of annual weeds (wheatgrass and desert alyssum) that

impede native vegetation restoration.• The results of using fire to restore native vegetation will inform current and future restoration efforts

throughout degraded sagebrush and grassland systems in the West.

Dunraven Pass closed to all travel• Due to recent and predicted significant snow storms, Tower Fall to Canyon Junction (Dunraven Pass) is

now closed for the season. The pass was scheduled to close to public vehicles on October 15, 2019.• Staff temporarily closed the road Tuesday evening, October 8, because of accumulating snow, wind, and

ice that made for extremely unsafe driving conditions. • For up-to-date information, visit Park Roads, call (307) 344-2117 for recorded information, or sign up to

receive Yellowstone road alerts on your mobile phone by texting "82190" to 888-777 (an automatic text reply will confirm receipt and provide instructions).

Porcupine Ibex Trail Opens October 11th

Livingston, MT – The newly constructed Porcupine Ibex Trail on the west side of the Crazy Mountains will open to the public on October 11th, 2019, in time for the Montana Youth Hunt and general season. The trail, located north of Livingston, Montana on the Yellowstone Ranger District, includes 2.7 miles of new trail construction to connect the Porcupine Cabin Trailhead to the North Fork Elk Creek Trail #195 and to secure long term public access to this area. The trail, open to foot, horse, and mountain bicycles, connects Elk Creek and Trespass Creek drainages and provides access to Campfire Lake. The Forest Service no longer asserts a claim to a Forest System trail on the route depicted in previous visitor maps as the Porcupine Lowline Trail. The Porcupine Lowline Trail will not be depicted in future maps.

Custer Gallatin Forest Supervisor Mary Erickson said, “We are excited to have completed the first phase of this trail relocation giving recreationists and hunters access into the Elk Creek drainage this fall. Providing long-term secured access into this portion of the Crazy Mountains is a significant accomplishment and benefit to the public. We look forward to the completion of the trail that will provide connectivity between the Porcupine and Ibex Cabins. This project not only provides a great recreation opportunity but also demonstrates what is possible when people work together to find common solutions. We hope you enjoy using this new portion of the trail.”For more information about trail construction please call the Yellowstone Ranger District at (406) 222-1892.
