Seventeen Barryites travelled to
Loose Park last Sunday to
participate in our annual CROP
Walk fund raiser. The Heart of
America chapter of CROP has been
around a long time. In fact, this was
the thirty-first year for this particular
walk, and our congregation has
participated in all of those years.
I have no idea how much money we
have raised over the years, but it
would be well into five figures.
I commend not only those who walk
each year, but also the whole
congregation. Each year as October
rolls around nearly everyone gets
involved in a supportive way.
Some walk, others give money,
some do both. The result is; people
are fed. I am always filled with
appreciation at the way you give so
willingly. You are the greatest!
Through our food pantry or the
CROP Walk or the pantry pack
program or the church emergency
fund human beings are cared for and
given aid. Thank you for your
thoughtful concern for others.
Love, Bob

CHURCH HISTORIAN’S NOTE: AFTER 1860
As noted in a previous article, we have in our archives a list of church members from the
year 1860. Some of these members have notations next to their names, indicating either the dates
of their death or dismissal. The dismissals appear to have been because the members moved
away, and not for punitive reasons. Below are some of the names found on that roster, and what
became of them.
Thomas M. Chevis-(see upcoming article about his life and influence) Died in 1864.
John Callerman-born about 1790 in Kentucky, disappears from the records after 1860-was
listed as an Elder and appears numerous times in the church record
James Vivion-born about 1804 in Kentucky, farmer, lived in Platte County in 1860, but moved
to Jackson County before 1870 and was dismissed by letter-wife Henrietta
Benjamin S. Long-born about 1808 in Kentucky, moved to Carroll County before 1870-Called
himself a Physician in 1860, but by 1870 is listed as a farmer, and Deacon of the church-wife
Sarah
A.C. Woods-born about 1811 in Kentucky, was a farmer in Platte County, but according to
church records died in 1864-wife Mary
A.G. Endicott-born about 1839 in Missouri, farmer, apparently moved away to Cass County be-
fore 1870, and was still farming there at the age of 73-wife Sarah
John W. Woods-born about 1830 in Missouri, farmer, sergeant in General Sterling Prices’ army,
killed at the Battle of Wilson’s Creek in the Civil War, 1861-wife Nancy
Wickliffe R. Vivion-born about 1842 in Missouri, but disappears from history after 1860
Cyrus Taylor-born about 1818 in Massachusetts, was a wagon-maker in Platte County, but dis-
missed after he moved to California, and there became an agent for the railroad
Norman Harris-born about 1815 in Kentucky, farmer, lived in Platte County until after 1880-
wife Mary
James S. Berry-born in Kentucky about 1802, farmer, was one of the early settlers of Platte
County, along with his brother William, and is mentioned
in the 1886 edition of Paxton’s Annals. Was still living in
1880 in Platte County-wife Catherine.

He was an early pioneer in Clay
County and an Elder at
Barry Christian Church in 1860.

Great News! We have reserved beautiful large Christmas Poinsettias from
Penrod's Greenhouse this year. You won't have to go traipsing out to the store
and then over to the church to drop off a poinsettia. Convenient for you, a
lovely way to enhance the Sanctuary and honor a loved one.
The cost is $14.00 Please write the check out to Barry Christian Church
(memo poinsettia), include a note with the information as to who it is from
and for whom the plant(s) is in memory or honor of and put it in an envelope
and place in the offering plate. You may place your orders for poinsettias
through Gail in the Church Office during the week. You will be able to take
your plant home after the second service on Sunday, December 30. We
would like to receive orders by Monday, November 26.

“Almost everything that matters is difficult.”
—Rainer Maria Rilke If money could talk
At the end of their lives, a 100-dollar bill, a 20-
dollar bill and a one-dollar bill met at the shredder.
The 100 said, “I’ve seen the whole world. Why, I’ve
been on cruises in the Caribbean, safaris in Africa
and vacations in Europe.”
The 20 said, “I haven’t done quite as well, but I’ve
been to Atlantic City, Disneyland and Starbucks.”
They both turned to the one-dollar bill and asked,
“How about you?”
Not wanting to be outdone, the one-dollar bill said,
“I’ve seen the whole country, as well. I’ve been
from church to church to church ... .”
Then the 100 asked, “What’s a church?”
