FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK ………… Our parents and teachers often stress on the importance of reading and at this stage of our lives; novel- reading is encouraged. Some of us do not understand the importance of reading. After all, it is just a pass-time. Why should it be any different from watching TV or listening to music? However, there exists a huge disparity between reading and the above mentioned hobbies. Its advantages are numerous and even difficult to count, but I will try to shed light on some very important ones. Firstly, reading makes you think. In case of fiction, writers create an imaginary world for the readers. Many-a-times, we are exposed to things which are completely new for us. We then begin reasoning out events, reflecting on the nature of the characters in the book.

Reading improves concentration and memory. A novel tells us anentire story and in order to understand this, we have to focus on itscontent. This is unlike magazines or internet posts, which contain smallmatter. Reading also requires us to remember themes, plots, characters, facts and figures.

Books have rightly been called as man’s best friends. After a stressfulday, we often find reading novels relaxing. This helps take our mindoff our own troubles. It is also a sure-shot remedy to reduce boredom.A power-cut would render the TV-watchers helpless, but the book-readers can enjoy the pleasure of reading whenever they wish to.

Along with the listed advantages, reading helps to improvevocabulary, creativity and knowledge of different cultures and

places. All these features set reading apart from other hobbies. A keenreader commands respect and will always have something to talk about,be it praise for an author’s use of language or criticism for another’slackluster story.

Reading shouldn’t be limited to comics. Today, on the book shelves of youngsters, Shakespeare, Tagore and Bronte have been replaced by J.K. Rowling, Chetan Bhagat and Dan Brown. It is to be rememberedthat books create a lasting impression on one’s mind and so it is

essential that one reads what is appropriate for the age.

This month was full of activities not only for students but

for teachers as well. It brought with it activities and

 plenty of learning experience.

We celebrated the ‘Teacher’s Day’ on 5

th

September. It is the day whenthe teachers get a platform to showcase their latent potentialities infields other than academics like singing, dancing, recitation of theirpoems etc. It was also important as it came as a zephyr of a relief forteachers with hectic schedule. It also motivated them to go on doing thenoble work as each of them was felicitated for the contributions made inshaping the child’s future.

Mr. Mohanlal laid emphasis on the student oriented question paper inthe inaugural address. The Regional Director of Western region Mr. K BKushal in his inaugural address advocated for a student orientededucation system by minimizing the gaps in learning and bymaximizing the inputs. The workshop proved to be a tremendous success and a great learningexperience for the teachers who were enriched with the mingling andsharing of ideas.

The month also observed many teleconferences and meetings wherevarious subject teachers could express and clear their subject relatedqualms with subject experts from CBSE and could strengthen the

teaching-learning process. It provided them with an opportunity tointeract and share their learning experiences with teachers of otherschools as well.

The striking highlight of the month was ‘India’s Largest Design forGiving  School Contest’ in which the street play on ‘Anti SmokingDrive’ was performed by the students of class IX in ‘Radhika BaiMeghe Vidyalaya’, Airoli. This ‘Design for Giving’ contest is part of the

‘Joy of Giving’ week which was held from 27
