Please Pray for our Holy Father’s Intentions for October Universal: That journalists, in carrying out there work, may always be motivated by respect for truth and a strong sense of ethics. Evangelization: That World Mission Day may renew within all Christian communities the joy of the Gospel and the responsibility to announce it.

October 09, 2016 Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Year C

2 Kgs 5:14-17; Ps 98:1-4; 2 Tm 2:8-13; Lk 17:11-19 The Lord has revealed his saving power to all the nations (Ps)! Naaman, a Syrian, is healed (1), and lepers are made whole, but only the Samaritan returns to give thanks (3). Let us remain steadfast in faith (2), and thankful for the Lord’s blessings (Ps).

Gratitude Surely we can all recall at least a few days in our lives when things were going so well that nothing could put us in a bad mood. Maybe it was the day a very special person asked us to the senior prom, or perhaps it was our wedding day. Maybe it was the day we learned that we were expecting a long-awaited child, or the day we got an overdue promotion. There was ela-tion in our hearts and lightness in our step, an extraordinary vitality throughout the day. We probably got on the phone right away to tell at least a few key people about our good fortune. This is surely how Naaman and the leper must have felt when they were rid of their terrible diseases. They were hard-pressed to contain their gratitude, and although they were both unfamiliar with the customs of a foreign land, they had the good manners to thank the people responsible for their cures.

Treasures From Our Tradition This month, parishes around the country will conduct the “October count,” a measure of attendance at Sunday Mass. The measure has been taken for many centuries, and in some Euro-pean dioceses it is possible to measure the level of engagement in worship by the population over the course of many centuries. Long ago, it was also the custom to track “Easter duty” by a statistical report. Penitents would receive a kind of chit at con-fession, which they would then turn in at their parish church when they received Holy Communion during Easter time. Long ago, of course, Communion was fairly rare in the life of a Catholic Christian, perhaps only once a year. The chits would be tallied by parish priests and reported to the chancery, which in turn would hold on to the records and include the statistics in a report to the Vatican every five years. Nowadays, the October count has proved especially critical in the life of our Church as bishops use the figures to measure the vitality of church life, to sketch parish boundaries, and even to decide when to close, merge, or form new parishes.

Religious Education Classes Have Begun The staff and catechists of St. Patrick Church are dedicated to helping your children grow in faith and be closer to God. As parents, you are the primary educators of your children and are their best teachers. Your children learn the most from the ex-ample you set when you pray together and actively participate in Mass and the sacraments as a family. Our Religious Education Program is designed to assist you in the faith formation of your children. Classes began on Sat-urday, September 17th. You may still register your child before class until Saturday, October 15th, or by stopping by the parish office during normal business hours.

Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515-1582) October 15

Let nothing disturb you; let nothing frighten you. Gifted with a passionate spirit, young Teresa dreamed of converting Mus-lims and becoming a martyr. All things are passing; God never changes. But her mother’s death when Teresa was fourteen in-spired lifelong devotion to Our Lady, and Teresa entered the Carmelites, Mary’s order, despite her father’s objections and her own fragile health. Patience gains everything. Initially, she enjoyed her lax convent’s sociability and “busyness,” but mysti-cal prayer and John of the Cross’ collaboration inspired her to reform the Carmelites. Whoever has God, lacks nothing. When her ideals encountered resistance and brought suffering, she maintained her peace-—and humor. Discovered devouring left-overs, she told her mildly scandalized nuns, “When I fast, I fast! When I eat, I eat!” To nuns demanding less work and more prayer in the convent schedule, she retorted: “What we really need around here are fewer starry eyes and more strong arms!” God alone is enough! The italicized sentences here are her “Breviary Bookmark,” the simple, profound prayer of Teresa, the first woman Doctor of the Church.

October is Mother Mary’s Month The Rosary will be recited every day during the month of October at 4:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to join. On Sunday, October 30th, everyone is also encouraged to join the Living Ro-sary at 3:00 p.m. in the church. Come and recite one of the Hail Marys or Our Fathers in the language of your choice. Let us pray, as a faith community, as Mary has asked us, so we can have

peace in our lives. Never will anyone who says his Rosary every day be led astray. This is a statement that I would gladly sign with my blood. ~ St. Louis de Montfort The Holy Rosary is not just a conglomeration of our Fathers and Hail Marys, But on the contrary it is a Divine Summary of the Mysteries of the Life, Passion, Death, and Glory of Jesus and Mary. ~ St. Louis de Montfort After the Divine Office and the Holy Mass, no homage is as agreeable to Jesus and His Divine Mother as the fervent prayer of the Holy Rosary, since the work of salvation began with the Angelic Salutation (Hail Mary) the Salvation of each one of us in particular is attached to this prayer. ~ St. Dominic

Accountable It is not only what we do, but also what we do not do, for which we are held accountable.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jubilee Year of Marian Devotion October 09, 2016

This weekend, the Jubilee honors Mary under the title Pope Francis suggests, “Mother of Mercy.” Recall the Good Samaritan Gospel. Priest and Levite saw suffering but showed no mercy. Recall the rich man, who never saw Lazarus right before his eyes, and showed no mercy. Today, Jesus sees ten lepers from afar and shows extraordinary mercy. Mary’s entire life, declares Francis, was modeled on Jesus, “Mercy-Made-Flesh.” Indeed, standing at the cross, Mary saw Jesus’ mercy take flesh when Jesus showed mercy to the executioners. So Pope Francis recommends we frequently pray the Salve Regina, Hail, Holy Queen, asking her to ever look upon us with mercy, so that we might be worthy to gaze upon the face of her merciful Son Jesus. May we do so not only in eternity, but here and now, opening our eyes to see Jesus in others, and our hearts to serve Jesus in others by loving deeds of unconditional mercy.

Breaking Bread Missal 2017 On November 27th, the First Sunday of Advent, we will replace our 2016 Heritage Missals with the new 2017 Breaking Bread Missal. We would be very grateful if you could share a sacrificial gift of $100 of your hard-earned money, especially during

these difficult times. As an acknowledgement of your generous $100 tax-deductible contribution, your name will be printed on a bookplate and glued to the inside front or back cover of the Missal. If $100 is not possible, any amount, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated. Look for envelopes in the weeks to come.

October 16th is World Mission Sunday World Mission Sunday, organized by The Society of the Propagation of the Faith, is a day set aside for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church's mis-sionary activity through prayer and sacri-fice. In 2016, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on October 16th.

Annually, World Mission Sunday is celebrated on the next-to-last Sunday in October. As described by Pope John Paul II, World Mission Sunday is "an important day in the life of the Church because it teaches how to give: as an offering made to God, in the Eucharistic celebration and for all the missions of the world" (see Redemptoris Missio 81). Pope John Paul II also spoke of the Propagation of the Faith's General Fund of support, calling this a "central fund of solidarity." In a message delivered on a recent World Mission Sunday, the Pope said: "The offerings that will be collected [on World Mission Sunday] are destined for a common fund of solidarity distributed, in the Pope's name, by the Society for the Propagation of the Faith among the missions and missionaries of the entire world." Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow - as new dioceses are formed, as new seminaries are opened because of the growing number of young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long sup-pressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the involvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offer-ings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide. Mission dioceses - about 1,100 at this time - receive regular annual assistance from the funds collected. In addition, these mission dioceses submit requests to the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples for assistance, among other needs, for catechetical programs, seminaries, the work of Religious Communities, for communication and transportation needs, and for the building of chapels, churches, orphanages and schools. These needs are matched with the funds gathered in each year. The world's national directors of the Propagation of the Faith vote on these requests, matching the funds available with the greatest needs. These funds are then distributed, in their en-tirety, to mission dioceses throughout the world. Please give generously to next week’s Special Collection.
