EUROSLAG is the European association of organisations and companies concerned with all aspects of manufacturing and utilisation of ferrous slag products. Already in 1993 an idea to form an international organisation dealing with iron and steel slag matters was born. The situation with regard to representation of slag interests on the European level was unsa-tisfying. Representatives of 10 European countries agreed to create a Working Group “Metallurgical By-Products”.

The successful co-operation within this Working Group led to the formation of EUROSLAG, the European Slag Association in 2000. EUROSLAG by now has the legal form of a registered association and its statutes, which was agreed by all EUROSLAG members in 2004, includes all relevant requi-rements and is the basis of the association’s work.

EUROSLAG’s mission is to promote and develop the utilisation of ferrous slag in all appropriate si-tuations. The association seeks to:

• Ensure slag products are made by the best possible processes using suitable quality control testing and inspection procedures giving the highest level of consistency of performance

• Provide and encourage communication between slag producers and processors in differen countries, insuring that technical advances can be more readily understood and adopted throughout Europe

• Co-ordinate technical working parties, research and development into slag processing and use• Bring together people from both the supply and utilisation side of the industry to foster a grea-

ter understanding of slag and its benefits• Provide a co-ordinated approach to European Standardisation• Promote the image of slag and to build confidence in members, products and processes

Welcome note by the Chairman

Circular Economy in the Slag Industry – reliable Products – reduced Costs

Following this slogan the 9th European Slag Conference is going to take place in Metz from October 11th to 13th, 2017. About 45 million tonnes of ferrous slag are produced in Europe every year and most of this amount is used in different applications. So slag is a convincing example for resource efficien-cy and circular economy and we want to show and to proof this once more during the conference.

This conference continues a line of successful slag conferences starting 20 years ago in Marseille. We expect around 200 participants from 30 countries from Europe and overseas, for their part ex-pecting 24 presentations concerning production and processing, characterisation and properties, research and development.

As legislative and political conditions become more and more important we are glad to open the conference with a round table discussion concerning state of legislation, rules and standards in Europe. Participants from European Commission and French economy as well as producers and users of slag products are going to talk about obstacles and chances of slag in circular economy.

The purpose of the 9th European Slag Conference is the exchange of knowledge related to technical applications, environmental and legal subjects for all kind of ferrous slag. So I am looking forward to another great conference giving us possibilities to experience from presentations and discussions and to improve utilisation of ferrous slag in all appropriate situations.

Société Lorraine d’Agrégats (EUROVIA Group)Nilvange, France

The first activity of SLAG was the collection and re-treatment of the phosphorous slags produced by the blast-furnaces in the Lorraine Region, from fresh production at the time the blast furnaces were still in operation, and from older stockpiles.

Furthermore, SLAG developed useful applications and markets for these new recycled materials: road construc-tion, ready-mixed concrete, rockwool, prefabricated ele-ments (cinder block, pavement…) So Slag is a major aggregates provider in the Lorraine Re-gion to the Luxembourg market.

A museum housing important gallo-roman and medieval collections, an archeology section exceptional for its richness, a superb section on medieval architecture, a large fine arts area, and a space devoted to the history of the Jewish community in Metz.

Built between 1738 and 1752, this is France’s oldest Opera-house/ Theatre still in activity today. Its

architecture is typical of the 18th century and the statues representing muses along the balustrade

were created by Charles Pêtre of Metz in 1858.

Inaugurated in 2010 and designed to offer a unique

experience, this space is dedicated to discovery and

creativity in all its forms. Avery lively centre where

Built in the early 20th century, its architecture barrows inspiration from the Rhineland cathedrals of Speyer and Worms, giving it a mediaval look. The Temple is intended for the use of the civilian community and is still a place of worship.

5 le Temple Neuf

This fortified city gate to the east of Metz owes its name to the Teutonic Knights or

Knights Hospitaller of Notre-Dame-des-Alle-mands, who has founded a hospice in the

adjacent street. It is the most imposing testimonial to the medieval ramparts still

standing today (13th-16th Century)

Its picturesque architecture with an

Italian influence bears witness to Metz’s prosperity in the

Middle Age.

An urban setting unique in its kind in both France and Europe, this avenue is a striking example of the electric styles and building materials chosen by architects in Metz in the early 20th century. The town was then looked upon as a real testing laboratory for architecture.

The Esplanade, Plan d’Eau, Parc de la Seille…Metz boasts over 1,400 acres of naturel greenery, i.e. almost 45 sq.m per inhabitant. It is thus ranked in the top tier

of France’s “green cities”. You will really enjoy strolling through thenumerous parks and gardens

around the town. Lapped by the waters of the Rivers Moselle and La Seille, Metz unfurls no less than 36

kilometers of paths along its waterways.

These cloisters are a little haven of peacefulness and serenity at the heart of the town, a former monastery remarkable for its elegance and simplicity. It took its name from the Community of the Recollets (Franciscan monks) who lived there from 1603 until the French Revolution. In 1972, Jean-Marie Pelt founded the European Institute of Ecology here.

EURAGGLO and the K.R. KOMAREK Group offer a briquetting, compaction and granulation process based on the technology of roller presses and compactors.

This technology allows the briquetting of steel-mill by-products and many other metal, metal oxides and mineral materials. This method can be applied to such materials as slags, mill scales, steel grits, mill sludge, blast furnace sludge, EAF dust and various fines from DRI, ferro-alloys, iron oxide pellets, coal and coke, etc.

The process consists in briquetting steel mill by-products in a roller press to produce briquettes of various sizes with ovoid or pillow shape, in order to recycle them in the melting process.

Advantages • A large choice of briquetting press capacity and design (from few tonnes to 60 mtph or more).• A proven precess: many references of such plants in operation worldwide, in steel mills.• An experience in different processes

and applications involving different binders or composition (by-products and coal, etc...).

Proposed Services • Audit of existing units.• Applied R&D in pilot plant.• Engineering process• Manufacturing of compactors and granulators• Integration of complementary equipment

(dryer, crusher, mixer...)• Maintenance and associated on-site services

The tasks of the FEhS Institute in its focal areas of research and services include the testing and monitoring of industrial by-products of the iron and steel industry, and other construction products. We certify manufacturers, research opportunities for utilising ferrous slag and smelting works by-products, provide consulting ser-vices for construction clients, and dispatch experts to national and international committees for standardisation. The institute finances itself and its projects through membership fees, publicly subsidised research assignments, testing, mo-nitoring and certification services, and through consulting activities for members and external clients in the fields of administration, the construction industry, and plant technology.

Research focusesThe FEhS Institute conducts work and research on the subject areas of building materials, fertilisers, secondary raw materials, and slag metallurgy, environment and transport construction. This is carried out in our own laboratories for the fields of cement, concrete, chemistry and environment, transport construction, minera-logy, microscopy and slag metallurgy.

Cooperation arrangements in science and researchIn the scientific sector, close cooperation arrangements based on mutuality are in place with universities and other private and public research institutions, e.g. the Institute of Building Materials Research of the RWTH Aachen.

Depending on the issues at hand, these are integrated into the work of the Institute as consultants or partners on pu-blicly subsidised research projects.

Duisburg Logport I Since 1954 I 45 members of staffThe FEhS-Institut für Baustoff-Forschung e.V. is the only research institute in the field of ferrous slag globally. We are associated with the leading steel manufacturers in Europe. Our main business areas are the applied research on slags with a practical orientation, consulting services on the subject of building material based on slags as well as their inspection in the construction industry. We make slags a little bit more sustainable each day – with tradition and modernity. Our scientists stand for reliable and cus-tomer-oriented services.www.fehs.de
